Royal Rountable Lunch 1/30/19
Thy 3rd Annual Royal Roundtable lunch hath been royally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 30th, noon, at Milanos. Marketh thy royal calendars and feel free to join the UDPride Braintrust as we discuss all things 'UD' with the pride, dignity and class reserved, deserved and reflective of the collective greatness of those in attendance!
The Roundtable does not discriminate therefore all are invited regardless of size, speed, strength, and Royalty.
So let it be written. So let it be done.
King Rollo the...the...the King....OUT!

Since the Royal Credit Card I was given only allows me 2 20-pc McNuggets a year, I don't think I can cover everyone else.

SDF picked up the tab in '17 but only because he beat me to it...I reversed the trend in '18. Both of us will be in attendance so if you, Figgie, Clayton, Chris R and other Royalty are looking for a free meal the odds are in your favor. No take out orders permitted.

To go to the only real Milanos you need a time machine. I still miss the ashes that dropped into the sub from the old lady’s cigarette.

The two pounds of turkey stuffed into a real homemade roll mixed with the cigarette ashes is far superior to the measly amount of turkey they put into a cold turkey now. Ahhhh the good ole days....

Roundtable?? I've never heard of a Royal Family sitting at a Round Table, that implies all are equal; and that cannot be true.
I guess Milanos is at least within smelling distance of the Pine Club.

Remember that frat scene in Animal House where Otter was shown into a 'special room' of...of...well, of potential candidates? That, my friendly Vice-King, is the equivalent of the rectangular table.

Cheesesteak, no mayo. They changed the cheesesteak to include mayo a few years ago and I did not like it.

You can fit a motorhome in front of across from Milanos. Get there before noon!

Two years in a row Jeff and I have brought warm southern weather to Dayton for the Royal Roundtable. Crossing my fingers for the trifecta.
I might add that we can't get out of Dallas if we are going to Gainesville without our wives. But for some reason they don't like the odds of bad weather in Ohio during the winter months. Go figure.

Always a fun lunch
The way it looks, we have a good chance of getting snowed in or snowed out. Fingers crossed on the weather. After the Roundtable we are heading to watch the Red Hawk gals play the Bobcats. Are the roads from Dayton to Athens still winding hilly two lane roads like they were in 1961?

Well I have left town on vacation twice in my lifetime in the middle of winter, and both times fell during the Royal Roundtable.
Mrs. Clayton Flyer Fan has booked a cruise and lots of beach time for a 10 day getaway to celebrate my birthday. It was a tough decision as to which I wanted to do, but considering my choices were sit on a white sandy beach in the Caribean enjoying the eye candy as my wife gives me a back rub and keeps my beverage full and cold, or sit at a table at Milanos in cold and snowy Dayton watching Rollo flex, Shocka chug Nati lights and make rude bodily noises, while Figgy runs his calculator keeping track of who made the most Swampy jokes, well you all know what I chose.
Have fun y'all, and hopefully I catch you all next year, if I am invited
As a side note, this is the second time in the last year we have googled last minute vacation and cruise deals and picked up a real cheap trip under 2 weeks before departure. If your able to go on short notice, can save $ on Expedia and other sites versus regular prices and booking further in advance like we used to always have to do.

The stretch of route 50 between Chillicothe and Athens has not changed in 30 years, still hilly and winding and 2 lanes. I have not driven from Dayton to Chillicothe on route 35 in 20 years, although IINM, that stretch of road has undergone significant improvement in that time. Route 32 between Cincinnati and Athens has not changed in the last 20 years.
2 of my nephews are currently students at OU, I have visited them several times, I try to take a different route each time back and forth just for variety.
And FWIW, Chillicothe no longer has that overpowering sulphur smell to it, not sure if a plant moved or changed or what. Quite a strong smell, I guess that you got used to it if you lived there.

I have family in Athens so I drive from south of Dayton fairly regularly. I usually take 35 (four lane the whole way, limited access for most) all the way to Jackson, then take 32 into Athens (four lane divided but not limited access). Whether it's faster than taking 50 from Chillicothe to Athens is debatable, but it's 1000x less stressful than getting stuck behind some turnip truck on winding, two-lane 50 or worrying about the Buford T. Justice speed trap in McArthur. (It is a pretty, scenic route though).
FYI, the Google machine says the route via Jackson is ten miles farther, but one minute faster.

If you get stuck behind a slow vehicle on 50 between Chillicothe and Athens, then it can be hard to find a spot to pass.
My dad was driving between Chillicothe and Athens on 50 once on the way to an OU visit, and he got stuck behind a slower pickup truck with locals? inside. They threw one or more beer bottles at him when he was trying to pass them.
I agree that 50 between Chillicothe and Athens is a very pretty drive.

FYI, the Google machine says the route via Jackson is ten miles farther, but one minute faster.

Agree that 35 to 32 is by far the best route - four lanes all the way. However, if the forecast calls for snow coming up from the South, 70 to 33 is better. We were in Athens once and a huge snowstorm hit from the South. Coming home we took 33 up to 70 and had no problem. Had we taken the "southern route" we would have had big problems.

Head south and turn right at the Gator...get a bite to eat and head west.
...drive about 6 hours and stop at the nearest BBQ joint. Order some pork bellies...
When you're done licking up all the sloppy seconds, get back in the truck and continue heading west until you hit the ocean...you know you're in the right place when you see this:
Any more requests???

Go through Oxford, Miss. then swing through Auburn Al, ending in Gainesville. Nothing else matters at that point. You will be limp by that time.

If you take the 35 to 32 route slow down when you get to Jackson County. The speed limit drops from 70 to 60 and you best not go over 63. I have driven this route 50+ times in the last 10 years and the only time I see state troopers is in Jackson County.

Wednesday is almost here! C'mon out and meet SDF, Shocka, Figgie, and, of course, Avid who will be attending his 1st Royal Roundtable!!!
Jan. 30...Noon...Milanos.
FWIW, the weather forecast says Wednesday's high temperature will be -2F, but the Roundtable must meet and the UDPride realm shall be saved for another year! The gods may be against us, but they are dwarfed by our collective appetites! At least they are as long as Shocka is there...

We are running head-long into the coldest arctic blast of the year. ugh. But nothing stops Flyer Fans. We will be there. My own personal worst is Cedar Rapids Iowa in the late '60's.
20 degrees below zero and a 30 mph wind = minus 53 degrees wind chill.

Well I don’t remember wind chill but in early 1990 we had 30 below or lower. I went out to start my Suburban and it was over a minute before the oil pressure started to rise but the valve seals were shot. Never again I switched to Mobile 1 and never experienced viscosity change again + so much easier on the starter and battery.

Would like to be there but FedEx gave me a delivery window of 7am to 7pm for the big screen OLED tv delivery and I need to be home.
Bought from LG dealer but still need to take pictures of truck, driver, condition of box and TV as I open the box. The freezing weather has me concerned as to the any effect on Light Emiting Diodes. I’ll open box and use laser to check temperature of the TV as delivered and let the Tv normalize to room temperature before unboxing.
I even paid the Ohio sales tax.
Enjoy one and all to the round table. Looking forward to next year.

Had planned to make it but (work) life interfered. Radar Jr will be there in spirit as his photo hangs in the back of the bar area as a recipient of the Milano's challenge, circa 2018. Enjoy Priders, looking forward to the next RR!

Unfortunately the battery in my TaunTaun has finally died after a long protracted illness over the last 6 weeks and I'm not Ubering to Pep Boys to get a new one to swap it out in this icebox this morning, nor pulling out the support vehicle from winter carbonite hibernation. It will have to wait for the 50s forecasted by end of weekend. May have to schedule an abbreviated roundtable redux before selection sunday.
I expect a full report on the minutes from the roundtable secretary so they may be published in the annual report.

The Royal Roundtable feast is complete and - like Vegas - what happens at the Royal Roundtable stays at the Royal Roundtable. The only discussion I can share publically is that Sir Widget and Sir Figgie have abdicated their false claims to the golden throne and I shalt be thy leader for at least another year.

He was correct if all were "hale and hearty" subjects. I'm sure they all towed the line. Or is that "toad" the line?

There's only one King
Thanks to all Priders in attendance, especially the newcomers this year. And including Clayton and Shaka who were with us in spirit. It was especially satisfying to meet the new folks and put a face with a UDP handle. Already looking forward to next year when an ever-increasing attendance validates the need to get together once a year and talk Flyers.
Thanks to all, and especially rollo who worked hard behind the scenes to conquer the expansion of the group in spite of -35 degrees.

What a great time with fellow UDPriders at Milano's today. Great to put names and faces with "handles" used on UDPride. Two observations - one, what a positive group of 15 in attendance. Secondly, all excited by the hustle and play of the Flyers and the leadership of AG. Keep it going Flyers.....keep it going AG......and to Rollo, thanks for picking up the tab.
NOTE: When and where is the First Annual UDPride Golf Outing?!?

It's my Royal Pleasure to treat everyone, especially when Shocka and Clayton aren't there! Plus, as a wise old man once told me, "If you don't spend it, it's just paper."

Hmmmm, since there's never anything meaningful going on at this time, might I propose MLK Jr Weekend, 2020? At Wright State Country Club...

While I appreciate the concept of "what happens at the round table stays at the round table", (believe me I'm very susceptible to blackmail from many fraternity brothers and am forever grateful there were no mobile phones when I was younger), I was hoping a picture could surface from today's festivities.
Tried to make it this year but had a prior commitment. Next year I'm in if the 4th annual event occurs.

Special thanks to the king for hosting the event despite all the obstacles. Turnout was better than expected with the sub zero weather and all. But it was well worth it to finally meet the king and put a faces with avatars. Puts a whole new perspective on their posts, personalities don't shine through so now know each one more personally giving that much more meaning behind their posts. Sarcasm is often times lost but now knowing the Prider first hand one can capture their intent.
Great to see SDF and Figgie again as well meeting all the guests of the round table.
2019 looking for my Knighthood. Ah, Sir Avid, love the sound of it.

Avid mentioned that personalities don't shine though etc. He's right, of course. His observation reminded of something.
I had the same summer job all the while I was at UD. Of course that was before the digital age...way before. My boss was about 45 (seemed like an old man to me at the time), a Penn business school grad, who was mentoring me, sort of.
In those days the way people communicated was in writing, over the phone or face-to-face. He emphasized, to me a college student), that nothing important should ever be communicated over the phone or in writing. Because then the person you're communicating with can't see the expression on your face. His point was that exactly the same words in written form, or even verbal form, can be understood differently than if the person you're communicating with can actually see the expression on your face while communicating.
That's the personality angle Avid was describing. It really makes a difference re understanding.

Was the song "sounds of silence" forbodeing today
....people talking but not speaking... I picture people gathered around typing on ipads, cell phones etc.
....people hearing but not listening....again people gathered around with headsets on...
Wasn't too long ago my senior friends thought texting was rude. Now that is how many talk today. Frees you up from getting hung up in a conversation you want out of. Besides it logs what was said for later reference if need be.
