Recruiting so key next 30 days
We anticipated Obi testing the waters. His potential and ability to shoot the 3 will open eyes and put his return in jeopardy. Jordan left and at this point Chase in not eligible until second semester. The staff has to fill at least one of the ships for a player this year. Have to be aggressive, an key injury and Obi not returning would make next year very tough. We went into last year with a short roster and it came back to burn us. Very important next 30 days.

It would be nice to fill 1 or 2 this spring only if they are AG’s guys but it surely isn’t mandatory even if Obi leaves.

For anyone interested, the recruiting calendar is available here https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/eli...ngCalendar.pdf
Officially in a dead period through tomorrow. Then a combination of recruiting, quiet, and eval days until mid May (16-24), which is another dead period. That's followed be a number of weeks of quiet and eval periods through June/1st week of July, whereupon you get nearly 2.5 weeks of dead period during the month. Calendar resets starting in August.

Assuming Obi is back I think the 11 guys on scholarship is enough to go into next season with
I think the key with recruiting with the two now open scholarships from Davis/Frankie and the the two opening up from Trey/Ryan is building for when the junior class graduates
now till signing in day October in 2020 could tell a lot of about the future of the program post junior class

Maybe you should check your math. There are two open scholarships currently for next season.

Need to use at least one....Chase has the past problems with concussion and who knows what else will come our way. IF Obi stays in the draft the front court is short. We are not ok the way we are set up today, have to fill the roster. I would recruit hard ...we need to win the conference and make a splash in the tourney....no stone unturned.

You must have a source who has told you Obi is not coming back.

Don’t worry, they like to follow each other’s post and just agree with one another.
There are currently 3 even though you want to disagree. When obi says he is coming back then there will be 2. If someone put their name in transfer portal would you consider that scholarship gone? Yes. No difference

Would you fill Obi's scholarship now, just because he has declared and is testing the water? No, I didn't think so. Obi's scholarship is not open, only the ships for Jordan and Frankie.

Agreed. You only fill the scholarships of (a) the guys you’re sure aren’t returning, and (b) the guys who are obviously overmatched at your level of competition.
We’re not sure Obi is leaving. If I had to pick a side, I say he stays and uses the pre-draft experience to better identify his weaknesses against NBA-level competition. Next year? That’s a different story. This year? Keep that ‘ship reserved for his return.

Completely different. When you go to the transfer portal you actually ask your current team for a release. Declaring for draft, you keep your eligibility with your current school. Obi is currently on UD’s roster until he gives up his eligibility.

Whether there is 2 or 3 is purely academic. AG needs to recruit as if there are 3 because he doesn't know for sure (unless he pretty much does). I don't see us bringing in 3 more players but it certainly is a possibility.
Hope is a bad strategy. Right now, we may hope Obi comes back but that's not knowing. Now, if Obi has told AG he is not leaving unless he is a likely 1st round pick then AG will likely approach it as if Obi will be back. But if Obi has left open the possibility of leaving if he is told he is likely to go in the 2nd round or to be a G League 2 way player, AG needs to protect the direction of our program.
Remember, that just because some mock draft experts don't have Obi on their board doesn't mean that some teams don't. It only takes 1 team.
If it happens the consolation is AG could walk into a kid's living room, look him and his parents in the eye and tell them for the second consecutive year, Dayton has put a kid into the draft after a redshirt year and single year of eligibility. With some transfers, that will carry some weight.

If Obi leaves we'd be down to 10 scholarship players. One who isn't eligible until conference play and another who is coming off a season-ending injury. Three of the remaining eight are transfers who could be total busts for all we know. Another one is a freshman project (does anyone on here actually think Sissoko will contribute right away?).
To sum up, if Obi leaves and we add no more eligible players we are in serious trouble.

Whether it ends up being 2 or 3 open spots, I'd be shocked if we filled them all.
We were in a great position to land Chase when we did because we had a spot open.

I agree Lowd&ProUD, I think it is key to have one open scholarship for transfers. Programs like ours are always going to have trouble landing top 100 players out of high school. We have a much better chance of getting them after being buried on the power5 bench for a year. I would fill one of the two with a shooting guard, hold the other. If Obi stays in the NBA draft, fill a second one with the best player available.

Definitely always need to try to keep one open for THAT grad transfer who can come in but they have to fill 1-2 spots soon..

Only if the best player available is worthy. Filling for the sake of filling doesn't usually end well.

That's the advantage of having one open at midseason because the competition for a guy like Chase is gonna be cut down from other schools being maxed out in scholarships

Exactly so if AG wants to continue down that path, he can only sign at most 1 guy until he knows for sure about Obi. So if Obi’s replacement and a good shooting G are both interested and ready to sign which does he take? If they are both studs I’m sure he’d take both but what if not he are just way top 200 guys?
It’s likely that by the time Obi’s future is known the pickings may be much slimmer and may not be someone he wants to spend 2-4 years on so he has to hope he knows what Obi is most likely to do when deciding today.
Definitely more art than science to this. It’s so easy for us to say what needs to happen and when. It’s far more complicated than that with all the moving pieces and other competitors with much more allure than UD can offer.

pure speculation on my part but I would guess Coach Grant and Obi have talked and AG has an idea (things can obviously) which Obi is leaning and what he hopes to get out of this
I'd guess if it's first round guarantee from a team that would keep Obi in and Coach Grant has some read on how likely that would be
