Findlay (Exhibition) Game Thread
I thought I would get a head start on this... hopefully we see plenty of improvement on our defense and rebounding... This Findlay team will definitely be a battle
They beat York in another exhibition game last Saturday 93-75
Their projected starting lineup (based off that game):
G Kyle Caiola 5'10" SR
G Aaron Robinson 6'2" JR
F Jack Smith 6'5" JR
F Greg Kahlig 6'6" SO
F Rob Marsden 6'7" SR
Let's Go Boys! Go UD!

Findlay facts
From the Findlay perspective:
http://athletics.findlay.edu/sports/...20111103uxhl1t
This game should gives us some interesting perspectives. In their class, Findlay is
always competitive.

Seven minutes to game time, no video yet?
No comments on the game thread.
Am I time zoned out of whack?

20-10, nice stretch there, like the movement and Gavrilovic is showing some good things for a frosh that hasn't had much time playing organized ball recently.

They are a good 3 point shooting team but they"re 0-9 tonight.
Normally they would have 9 or 12 more points there.

I love the spread of points around the team. A lot of guys in on the action.
7-10 freethrows. Nobody with 3 fouls. Out rebounding them 25-11.
Wow.
I see something else I like - the dribble drive, double team, and handoff for a clean layup by the big man. Hope we see a lot of that.

Gotta keep in mind, though, they are 1-12 from 3. I would expect them to be 7-12, and that would be 18 more points, leaving us up 51-48.
Still up, though.

Don't want to belabor the point, but how many teams are going to go 1-21 from 3 against us?
Good showing so far though. I love the intensity. We are going to surprise some teams this year.

Very sloppy play the last few minutes. Radio guys keep talking about fatigue. If it is, we could be in trouble in close games this season. Hopefully it's just that the guys figured this one is in the bag and let off the gas a little bit.
Finishing this game strong would be nice.

The reason they shot poorly from 3 is that they were not getting many good looks-our perimeter D was very good.

You need to watch the game and see what the defense is doing to cause poor outside shooting.

No PT for Ralph Hill? 4 rebounds in 8 minutes. Even for garbage time, that's a pretty good clip, and about the same as the first game.
I didn't see the game, but clearly there was at least some time where they went small with the 3 guards playing together (Dillard, Parker, Williams).
Playing time parity in the post: Kavanaugh, Benson, Gavrilovic, and Fabrizius each had 16-18 minutes. Looks like he's really giving anyone who grabs it a chance to shine and grab major minutes. But more likely, we're going to need them all to play those kind of minutes. Multiple reasons: fresher legs, more fouls to give, and very different strengths among the 4 of them.
Oliver laid an egg. 0-6 FG, 2-4 FT. Hopefully he got that out of his system for the year. He got 25 minutes, though. Second to Dillard.
I notice a Luke Kohls playing for Findlay - any relation to Greg?

It was an entertaining game to watch, even though we were blowing them out most of the time.
I was impressed with another good offensive showing, but we did not handle the press well at all. I'm not too worried about that though. I think it was more a matter of disorganization than anything else. I think Archie will get around to working on that aspect of the game with our guys in practice. We cannot afford to lose Dillard, however.

I don't think we'll see any big average more than 22-24 minutes a game this year.

One game observation
the Flyers are so much more calm on the floor
Players not looking over their shoulder at the bench
Coach not shouting instructions as he runs in front of the bench

I have been watching Oliver's scoring this year hoping he has improved over last year when his FG, 3 Pt., and FT percentages were poor:
FG: 32%
3 Pt: 16%
FT: 37%
But he is doing other things well, and with more playing time (he averaged 9.5 minutes/game last year) hopefully his shooting will improve.

I did not even notice that Devin Oliver was struggling to score yesterday. I thought he played well until someone pointed out those shooting stats. I thought he did well in the other phases of the game.

What about the 3 minutes he played in the FIRST half? A defensive rebound, a missed 3 ptr, a layup (no look pass from Dillard I think), a made 3 pointer and a defensive rebound. 8 minutes is more than ever in a real game. 5 points is one less than his most points. He had 2 offensive rebounds in the second half, for a total of 4, when his high in regular games was 2.

Ok, So he didn't shoot well. Want to mention his 4 offensive rebounds, and 2 defensive rebounds? And one of the offensive rebounds was really good...coming in from the right side, grabbing the board, and running out to the left side to reset the offense.

I thought sure someone would mention his 6 turnovers. But his stat line is indicative of a player that is everywhere on the court making things happen. Iverson was a turnover machine, but he also was a winner.

I liked what I saw from Gavrilovic. He looked very capable at the free throw line. How long has it been since we had a good free throw shooting big man?
He is also more athletic than I expected. And even though he isn't a leaper, his long arms compensate some for that, IMO.

Our depth, or lack thereof, has been a concern going into this season and I was wondering what Priders thought about the stamina exhibited by our kids during our two exhibition games. I know we've been concerned about how foul trouble could negatively affect us this year given our thin bench, but what is the general feeling about our level of conditioning going into this season? Did the energy level or quality of play drop off significantly as the game wore on? Did AMs substitution patterns reflect any concern about conditioning and was there a noticeable decline in defensive intensity late in the second half?

I know it was the same for both sides but, since this was an exhibition game, I am assuming there was not he usual complement of tv timeouts. For once, I think we will benefit from those as opposed to past years when our opponents received that benefit.

the depth issue is one that IMO only becomes a problem on the perimeter, most especially if Dillard gets hurt or in foul trouble.

Certainly things got sloppy in the last 10 minutes, and Findlay cut a 71-37 lead down substantially. Same with Walsh, who closed a little late.
Not sure if that's fatigue, or just staying mentally sharp in a blow out.
Can't recall specifically, but pretty sure there were the same under 4 minute deadball TO's. Not sure from that standpoint the game was run any differently.

They always have the Official TO every 4 minutes. I guess they are there for the radio broadcast. Since UD has sold most of the official TO's to sponsors I would think they would have them even if there was no broadcast of any kind.

Well fatigue could account for some of the fall-off in late game performance...weak legs negatively affect shooting, rebounding and getting back on defense, while mental acuity also gets dulled. Hopefully, as the kids get more training and their bodies become more accustomed to the pace and duration of playing time, their stamina will improve. I'm just a little concerned (I know it's early yet) about the impact an up-tempo game or a pressing defense could have on us during the season given our limited bench.

I doubt if you are half as concerned as Archie and his staff. Notice we haven't really seen any noise about grueling "boot camps" this pre-season. Dillard hasn't played D-1 in 18 months. Oliver coming off mono. Hill had a serious pre-season injury. Benson hasn't added any meat. Fabrizius is injury prone. Kavanaugh is foul prone. Add in the intensity expected on defense and a motion offense, and wow.
This whole situation is a house of cards. We will need some luck to avoid burnout.
