Duquesne Game Thread
We all know Saturday was a horrible loss, even the coaches said that too... Don't worry about it... Shake it off and come out and play a complete 40 minute game both offensively & defensively
I still believe!
Go Flyers! Go Archie!
---Come on PW... Play like we know you can! I hope this fanbase continues to believe in you because I will.

Who is worse our team our PW? He is throwing the ball at the basket. That layup was a brick and so were both free throws.

Seriously, here's a team that shoots 32% from 3pt for the season. And they start out shooting 83%. Got to normalize.

9 points down at the half. About the best we could hope for with Duq's unconscious shooting.

Just logged on to see we have allowed 49 pts in the 1st half. 49 pts? What a joke.
I'd rather lose games 46-43 than 93-90. Defense is all about heart and determination. If you give up 93 pts, you lack it.
Come on guys.

Down 9 at the half....The Dukes shooting lights out. 3 Possession game. But can we stop them? Give up 49 points in the half? ridiculous. In the last two halves we have given up 99 points. Are you kidding me?

These guys are throwing them in from everywhere. I hope they take 16 more 3pt shots the second half. I don't think they can shoot that well again.

Again, I didn't see the 1st half, but if these guys are getting open looks, they're going to hit the 3-ball. They are division 1 basketball players.

They are getting WIIIIDE open looks. The closeout comes about the time the shooter lands afte the jump shot.
At the pace Duquesne plays 5 turnovers is ridiculous. No desire to defend. And no discipline to pound the ball inside.
Play as they have three of last four halves and UD has won their last game of the year.

55-55 with 10:41 left. I have a feeling the zebras are going to start evening the foul count. To say Duquesne plays reckless is an understatement.

Second half they are 1-5 from 3pt & they are still getting good looks. Maybe they just figured out they really don't shoot 70%.

It's a game of runs. We had a good to start the 2nd half now they are having a run. Do we have enough to make one final big run?

And just like that, no defense again. Ralph looks lost out there on 2 straight defensive series.
The strategy is keep the ball out of Dillard's hands and we have no answer.

Right now this is starting to feel like the URI game where we stay close until the final buzzer. DU is preying on anyone handling the ball except Dillard and Parker.

Paul hasn't played well in quite some time, I get that. I get that he's the current whipping boy on this losing streak. But fingers could be pointed throughout the roster and staff at this point. To put it all on Paul is unfair imo.

A 42% freethrow shooter makes two in row --nothing but net. I suppose that's bad freethrow defense.

But sadly, I guess he is the best perimeter defensive player on the team. That is the only reason he is guarding McConnell. Paul is better than KD and JP, but that's not saying a whole lot.

Once again we see what happens when A10 coaches get to study our strengths and weaknesses. We seem to sneak up on ooc opponents, but we are uncovered in the A10.
Our limited number of ball handlers just taxes our strength.

Can anyone tell me why Paul freekin Williams was in there at the end instead of Luke? What is he due to make a shot since he has missed so many? He has to be on drugs or something. He shoots layups like a junior high kid.

Perhap its time to start playing the walkons for a min or two for a breather. Can't hurt, we are gassed the last five minutes or so of the game.

I could debate that some. Paul is longer but he gets juked easily and he has a lot of trouble with quick guards.

Unfortunately, Paul is playing small right now. Not looking for his shot. Not wanting to make a mistake. No wanting to handle the ball. Ball sticks in his hands. His shot is normally a bit flat, but right now they are lasers.

I cant for the life of me figure out why Luke didnt play but maybe 30 seconds in the 2nd half...its not like his d could be worse than what was out there and at least he can score. Hell with 2 mins left Archis had Oliver and AG out there and seemed happy to be trading baskets down 9...thats when i left.

Well then you need to tell Archie that because it seems to me he continuously has him on the other team's best guard.

Archie prefers Ralph on the defensive side of the floor over Luke. That tells you how bad of a defensive player Luke is.
Luke took a quick 3-pt shot early in the shot clock and I don't think he really saw the floor again.
Archie is getting quick with the hook when a player like JP or Luke take bad shots. He came into the season talking big about his players not having to look over their shoulders when they miss a shot, but he now looks like another prior UD coach who was quick with the hook as well, imho. And I for one appreciate that. You can't allow your guys jacking up bad 3's early in the shot clock, it ruins flow and more importantly team chemistry. Archie is trying to build his program, I respect him for that.

This Was Not The Reason Why We Lost, But...
The officiating in general was a bit substandard, and there was 1 ref in particular (Sean Hull) who, for much of the game, wouldn't give us a break if we gave him a hammer. At one point in the first half, with @ 10 minutes gone, the foul count was Dayton 8, Duquesne 1.
This doesn't excuse a lack of concentration, effort, or execution on defense, but when the other guy can get away with riding the ballhandler like a racehorse & you get whistled for sneezing on your man, it does take away some aggressiveness.
Again - this doesn't excuse failure to close-out on time on the shooters, or picking-up the weak side on a screen, but it didn't help us any, either.

The fouls early in the second half were almost in the direct opposite direction. I think UD was in the 1 and 1 before they were called for their second foul.

Officials always reward the aggressor - that would be Duquesne in the first half, and Dayton at the start of the second half.

After our big run in the 2nd half, it looks like everything went downhill after they subbed Dillard to give him a rest.
"Rallying from 16 points down, the Flyers took a 57-55 lead with 10:09 to go on two free throws by Chris Johnson. But guys were getting gassed, and Miller knew he had to give them a break.
“At that point, it was going to be anybody’s game, and the team that was able to get stops, take care of the ball and finish (on offense) was going to have a chance to win,” he said. “But right when we hit that 10-minute mark, we had to sub. We had to give different guys blows. And we had breakdowns on both sides when that happened.”
I checked the play-by-play to see if Miller’s recollection was accurate, and it was. To a degree. He put in Devin Oliver for Luke Fabrizius during the Johnson foul shots, which isn’t a big change. Oliver was soon getting tugged to the bench for Ralph Hill.
And there was only one other switch during that critical part of the game, but it was a drastic one: Point guard Kevin Dillard was replaced by Josh Parker at 8:13 with the Flyers trailing by just one. When Dillard returned at 7:44, the deficit was five and momentum was spiraling in the wrong direction.
What that shows is just how valuable Dillard is to this team. He finished with 22 points and seven assists with a mere two turnovers in 36 minutes. He can’t play 40, though, and the Flyers are pretty much directionless without him."
Subbing Dillard costly for UD against Duquesne:
