Murray State Game Thread
Forget about Wednesday, we need to play a very good game to come away with a W at an undefeated Murray State team.
Let's Go Boys! Bring effort and make some shots... GO UD!

Alex is out today due to a sprained ankle... so it looks like we are going only 8 deep today, thank god Murray is not the biggest team

That is too bad. I think for us to suceed this year, Alex will have to contribute some significant minutes.

Is the video feed working for anyone. I can't get the foxsportsohio.com website to come up. Is their server down or something?

The DaytonFlyers.com link to Fox shows the Buffalo game (like a recurring nightmare) but ESPN 3 is carrying the game. Ahead of the radio broadcast.

I know we are down early and little sloppy but I see a lot more energy from us in this game compared to the Buffalo game so far

Murray post defender is using his chest well, and the refs are letting him initiate the bump. That's going to be an issue for both Kav and Josh.

Come on Flyers penetrate and dish/work inside and we win. Play strong perimeter D and they are powerless.

I like what I've seen from him so far. He is playing good D, hustling for the loose ball, caused a TO on defense, and took a wide open 3 that should've gone in. It would be great to see him become a contributor this year.

The Racers are allowed to crash into Flyers and hack inside, but other than that the refs are OK.

Does Archie teach back cuts at all? There is no way you can allow a team to push your offense out that far.

We'd be in the lead if not for TOs and terrible outside shooting.
Let's see if we can fix these things in the second half.

We are seeing some really quick hands in there, but not THAT quick. Too many to's.
But shoot our ave% from 3pt and we are leading. Not dropping.

We need dribble penetration to break down that 40 feet of pressure. That will give us opportunities for some cuts and layups. We are defaulting to the three-point shot far too early in the possessions. It is upon Kevin Dillard to hold the ball longer and dribble-penetrate. Passing to Luke, Josh, or Matt out front is futile and invites turnovers.

Agree, they are playing very hard on both sides of the court. We just need to be more patient offensively and dribble penetrate.

Some very interesting calls, Murray knocks our player to the ground and its a turn over on us.
3pt shots hitting front of rim again.

I am interested in seeing the kind of offensive adjustments we make at the half to make them pay for playing such aggressive defense on the perimeter. We are bigger and taller under the basket, we should figure out a way to capitalize.

Too many guys catching passes on the wing and then looking immediately back to the point or even to midcourt. Too easy to defend if you're not even giving the impression that you might be looking into the paint or are preparing to take your man off the dribble.

Kav is a waste today. He is out playing guard on offense, and way too slow on defense. Miller needs to play Luke.

We need to stop the three's and work the ball in the paint. We are doing OK on offense when we do that. Dillard and Parker need to stop picking up their dribbles and get dribble penetration with cuts to the basket. Please stop the three's! They have crushed us the last two games.

We have a competitive advantage on the inside and our players are too quick to take the three!

52-37. Ouch.
Let's see... if we were hitting at say 25% on 3's and they were hitting at say 50%... then it would only be 46-43.
Unfortunately, they're hitting at a ridiculously good level and we're hitting at a ridiculously bad level.

Josh Parker, you cannot pick up your dribble at 35 feet. Our only hope here is to give the ball to Dillard every time and let him penetrate. We just can't think out there.

I really appreciate our dogged determination to continue to pass around and take off balance 23 footers. Working the ball inside for fouls & shots would be like admitting your current strategy is failing.

We have 2 guards that drive the ball well, and they play deny defense all the way to the half court line. Tell me again why Dillard needs a high ball screen?? Get Kav out of the way, go 1-4, and let Dillard just go to work. We'll see how long that fully deny defense lasts.

Murray definitely has the speed advantage. But luckily we've got the height. How much are we outrebounding them by again?

We switch PW to Canaan. He proceeds to stare at the ball while Canaan moves to get open for a 3. Completely killed the run we were on. Those are the little things that will not allow us to come back.

I disagree in part. When a guy is nailing them from NBA range you guard him no matter how far out he is. He gets the first 2 for free and then you're all over him or you need to sit.

If we're still tired from Orlando, maybe we should take off the rest of the non-con schedule and get ready for the A10

Paul Williams was looking for some help-defense and did not get it. Archie wants the primary defender to stay on the ball...tough to get used to.

P Willie getting a bit lazy on defense & allows Canaan to get 10' feet away from him for the kick out 3. Can't or don't these guys know how to deny the ball? Make Canaan run, run, run...

Random observation - on free throws Oliver lines up down low for the rebound above Fabrizius.

Is CJ sick? It would be nice if he would have made the trip with the team.

Man, I wish we could get a call. That guy flopped against Benson. Luke did the same thing and they didn't call it. This is getting ridiculous. Hand-checks against Dayton and muggings by Murray...and nothing gets called.

Back to back losses by 30 and 20. When's the last time that happened? Clearly the team doesn't have it figured out yet.

Cj ought be riding the pine as he's wasting playing time. To say he stinks is an understatement. If you re cold from outside you get Rebs and slash to the bucket on offense

Alabama plays a very similar pressuring man-to-man... with twice the athletes. Do we stay within 40 of them?

Offensively, we rely far, far too much on the quick three's and forget about penetrating and dishing off. The Murray defense would have been vulnerable to this maneuver but we just couldn't execute it. Our point guards weren't patient enough...too quick to pass off to another player.

Wow. We suck worse than I thought. 71-54 is all I can hack for the day. I've got other stuff to do like check to see if Pittsburgh has rolled up 50 yet on the Bengals. At least the Flyer women are holding serve at home.
Thank you to Benson, Dillard (as always), and Williams (for the most part) for allowing the final margin not to set some kind of record in road futility to match the home record we just set. Heart and hustle weren't lacking today. But defense, shooting, smart passing, and the thinking game in general were all severely lacking. I keep wanting to believe Arch that one of the strengths of this team is shooting. But how about stopping the other team's hot shooter? Even when you don't have your offense you can still bring your defense every night if you really want to.

Again, there's our true PG. Dribbled for 25 seconds and then tried to throw it at the rim with 3 guys guarding him.

Well we have our answer, Old Spice Classic was the aberration.
Funny how we want national exposure an yet it was those 3 games that gave our opponents all the scouting info they needed.
And now we can also eliminate the road blues.
The flyers just need find their identity again. With Archie I have faith they will, we all knew it was going to be a work in progress.

i think CJ has just mentally checked out honestly. theres no way a coach didn't tell CJ at some point to stop shooting 3's and attack the rim. yet, there he was airballing 3's with 30 ticks left on the shot clock.
