Saint Louis Game Thread
The Atlantic 10 conference season is here... sweet! Tonight might be our toughest game to date and it will be even harder without the PF... If we want to win tonight, everyone must work together on the glass and on defense to help for the loss of Josh.... That means you DMO, Luke and Ralph!
Let's go boys! Time to show the conference we can win without one of our best!
GO UD! Go Archie! Beat SLU!

10 Things You Need to Know - Playing STL is death by a 1000 paper cuts. Open looks are rare for the opposition, the Billikens are incredibly patient AND efficient on offense and rarely turn the ball over. Simply - they don't beat themsleves. STL punishes teams that don't take care of the basketball or take quick shots. To beat them you have to play smart and your playmakers have to make plays.
- Fat Rick's teams always play tough, tough D. They have been a top 50 defense the last three years and this year they are defending at an elite level holding teams under 40% from the floor and under 30% from behind the arc.
- STL will sacrifice offensive rebounding to shut down your transition game. They like their chances defending in the half court - especially this year.
- STL doesn't have any one player that opposing defenses key on, but Rick does have a veteran squad that knows his system and - for the first time since he's been there - he has quality depth. STL will play 9-10 with no drop off in defense when the starters go to the bench.
- The Billikens are loaded with players that do multiple things well. They share the ball (193 A on 341 FG), shoot it from deep (.395 3FG%), and have players that can create their own shots off the bounce and in the paint. Fat Rick identifies opposing teams weaknessess and then puts on a clinic exposing it; partly because he has the flexibility and talent on the roster to do so.
- If Brian Conklin (15 pg/5 reb) were a MLB pitcher he would be the quintessential "crafty lefty." Rarely bigger or quicker than opposing forwards guarding him, Conklin is a master at creating space to get his shot off and has a soft touch. It seems like every shot he puts up hits the rim a few times and (more often than not) rolls in.
- Kwamain Mitchell (11 pg / 4 apg) is not the same player he was before the injury. His explosive first step is gone and he is more facilitator than scorer, but he's a smart and steady PG who doesn't turn it over - exactly what STL needs. He may be their least efficient scorer and if he is taking a lot of shots the defense has scored a minor victory.
- Next to Conklin, guard Jordair Jett is the toughest matchup for Dayton. Jett does have a great first step and will get to the rim and finish. Quick guards have given Dayton fits this year. Jett runs hot and cold and occassionally careens into the paint out of control, but has improved quite a bit from last season.
- Cody Ellis & Kyle Cassity are almost exclusively jump shooters and deadly from behind the arc. Cassity especially has a knack for finding the open man if you overplay him on the perimeter.
- STL is incredibly efficient on offense (48% FG - 40% 3FG) and incredibly stingy on defense. If you trade possessions with them - you lose. For Dayton to compete they have to dominate the glass & limit their turnovers generating additional possessions.

Dayton has a chance to beat any team in the country when they get that shot at the Arena. They defend as well or better than Alabama, but are much more efficient on the offensive end. If Jett doesn't have a big game and Kavs stays out of foul trouble, I like our chances to keep it close. STL is just frustratingly consistent - not unlike Dunphy's Owls. They rarely beat themselves and just patiently keep running their stuff.

stat smack...dayton is better than SLU... this season and overall
one example:
"Keep filling up on cupcakes. Dayton has a stronger schedule than Saint Louis this season (SOS Rank: #15 vs #247)."

Maybe I will think differently in 2 hours, but Murray was our toughest game, and may be all year.
If we stay out of foul trouble, and do not decompose as in the past against St. Louis, we have a good shot.

Derrick Dukes mis-speaks a lot. Gav was name A-10 Player of the Year? Usually pretty easy to tell what he means, but it's kind of amusing. He constantly would refer to Josh Benson as Josh Parker or vice versa.

Got to say that as bad as the Georgia Tech -- Alabama game was last night, the first half of the Duke -- Temple game was a joy to watch and it was like I was watching an elite 8 game. Not to say that either team will be there, but that is a good game.

13-7 STL
2 fouls on Fab. The last one was dumb.
STL to the line... makes it 14-7.

Kav not quite straight up and down. Leaning forward, too. Could've probably had the charge, though.
Instead, it's 17-12 after a 3-pt play.

At what point do you just say "ok I'm beat, have the layup"? When you have 12 personal fouls???

Great pass Dillard to Gav, but he misses the layup this time.
3rd foul on Gav leads to more foul shots for STL.
Fabrizius back in.

I would let Ralph set the pick, I'll bet they leave him alone and now he's in the flow--might get a good look at a 3.
Ralph, Gav. . . hate that Benson is hurt but this might be good for us in the long run. Ralph has some talent, maybe this is his chance.

Nice passing by Dillard. Even when he's not hitting his shot, if he is getting everybody else involved with great passing, we're tough to beat.

Glad that was a dead ball when Ralph blew that follow-up dunk.
Oliver with a strong drive, is fouled, but can't finish.
Hits the first free throw, and also the second.
26-25.

I like the overall effort. Ralph Hill seems to be excited on defense. Gotta make layups though. Holy crap Luke just blocked someone.

36-28.
Ouch.
Horrible ending.
At least we had a run or this could've been un-redeemable.
We still have a chance at least.

That was a terrible end to the half. SLU stepped up their defense and we couldn't answer.

Luke has personally destroyed us in the past 3 minutes. Does he ever meet a pass? His defense is a joke. Play Kav and the Frenchman till they foul out.

UD is just not deep enough to foul carelessly and not play smart. Those last 3 minutes were highlighted by ill advised 3's from 2 of our better players. Tough to get it done that way. I do like the quicker pace Arch has got them playing. Should produce soem easy looks in close.

2 good A-10 teams represent the conference well with 2 great wins tonight: Temple over no. 3 Duke and LaSalle over formerly ranked Gangsta U.
Need the Flyers to win this one for a trifecta.

Has the video feed been this unwatcheable all year? It is like they are pausing it every 3 seconds. No other video feeds give me problems. The videofeed 5 years ago was better.

Or get up on the rim and tear it down if your going to try and force it in there knowing you don't have good handle and body control.
