Conference Rank: #9 Atlantic 10 Conference 2009-10: 16-15, 6-10
2009-10 postseason: CBI
Coach: Karl Hobbs (149-115 at George Washington, 149-115 overall)
Final Projection:
George Washington is a year away from what should be their best season since their last NCAA appearance, but the 2010-2011 campaign should not be too bad either. It may be too much of a reach to hope for an NIT berth in a tough A-10 conference, but the Colonials should aim for another postseason berth in either the CBI or CIT. Anything better than that and George Washington’s expectations would suddenly sky rocket in 2011-2012.
Projected Post-season Tournament: CBI/CIT
Projected Starting Five:
Tony Taylor, Junior, Guard, 9.4 ppg
Lasan Kromah, Sophomore, Guard, 11.8 ppg
Aaron Ware, Junior, Guard, 6.4 ppg
David Pellom, Sophomore, Forward, 2.9 ppg
Joseph Katuka, Senior, Center, 5.9 ppg

Per WH of the A10 board:
http://www.basketballforum.com/atlan...ashington.html
W - Boston University (At Villanova as part of NIT)
L - At Villanova (as part of NIT)
? - (NIT runnerup bracket if loss to Nova)
? - (NIT runnerup bracket if loss to Nova)
W - UNC WILMINGTON
W - At George Mason
W - NAVY (Verizon Center)
W - TOWSON STATE
L - At Oregon State
W - EAST CAROLINA
L - At UAB
W - HOLY CROSS
W - At Howard
W - HARVARD
NONCONFERENCE RECORD: 9-3 (to be revised once sked is complete; see NIT)
The keys to GW's success is to score more points inside with Joseph Katuka and David Pellom; get stellar play from the backcourt of Taylor and Kromah; shoot better on free throws and behind the arc; make better decisions with the ball; and learn how to close out opponents. The young Colonials blew too many games down the stretch.
I think the Colonials could be the surprise of the A-10. THe team is deep and athletic and they will run and press like Hobbs teams of old. They should mostly blow through an easy nonconference schedule, but hold up much better in league play given all the experience the youngster got last year.
Lasan Kromah has the shooting ability and physical tools to play for money some day, and junior Tony Taylor is one of the best and least celebrated point guards in the A-10. Dwayne Smith is another player to keep an eye on. The 6-6 combo forward might also have all-league potential with his budding inside-out game. The frontcourt, meanwhile, can do the job defensively and on the boards, though a little more offense would help. Katuka seems ready to emerge as a consistent threat in the post.
GW starts off in the preason NIT with a game vs. Boston University. The COlonials seem to play and beat BU every year, no matter where the game is played. Hard to see GW upsetting Nova at home in the next game, however. The Colonials can actually match up with size and athleticism, but Nova is very tough in its own backyard.
The Colonials follow up with a win over a down and out UNC Wilmington that has a new coach. GW heads to George Mason next as part of a new local rivalry. GW beat Mason last year, but Mason returns all five starters and they are tough at home. I go with an upset as the Colonials use their length to bother the smaller Patriots.
GW should handle mediocre Navy and Towson teams in the next two games before flying out to Oregon State. I think the Colonials are the more talented team, but it's a long flight and OSU has a good coach. Yet the game will be closer than GW's loss last season to Oregon State in the Smitty.
Returning home, the Colonials handle East Carolina, which is undergoing yet another rebuilding job. They meet a similarly athletic team in UAB down at Birmingham, but that's always a tough place to win. UAB is mostly young, inexperienced and on the smaller side, but the Blazers do have a good starting backcourt. GW has more size and talent. This is the kind of game they need to win to start thinking about the postseason. I call it a loss to be conservative.
After that it should be smoother sailing with wins over Holy Cross (coming off a disastrous year), Howard and Harvard.
BONUS A-10 PREDICTION: 9-7 (18-10 overall)
The Colonials pair up with LaSalle, Charlotte and Richmond. I expect the Explorers to be much improved, so this is a tough group. Hard to see more than 3 wins out of this group. GW also goes on the road at Xavier, Rhode Island, Duquesne and Massachusetts. It will be tough to win more than one or two of those games. Tee rest of the sked lines up favorably, however, to give GW a good chance to get over .500 in league play.

The best part of today's game... CJ will enter the 1,000 point club with one FG or one foul shot. Go CJ!

9-5 first break. GW already down 2 players w/2 fouls. CJ finally gets his points. GW very out of sync and we should have a few more points than we got. Need to convert.

They are looking much better in terms of getting into the paint...running a vertical offense instead of a horizontal/perimeter offense. I hope it continues.

GW rallies 16-18
JP drives, gets in trouble, has his back to the basket, throws it up underhand, and it somehow spins into the basket.
18-18.

Paul Williams and Luke are ice cold from the 3 line. We are better off pounding the ball into the paint.

Bonnies up 9 at URI late 1st half. SLU down 10 vs X late 1st half. Need both to lose to get a 1st rd home game if this one doesn't end up going our way.

Dukes makes the statement "I don't know why college teams don't use a 2 for 1 situation more. They do it all the time in the NBA."
Hey Derrick, news flash they play 4 quarters in the NBA and 2 halfs in college.

I have never seen a team-at any level- who performs so badly at the end of the half. It's almost a given that they will not get good shot in the last 30 seconds

Did anyone see, at that last 30-sec TO, BG was ripping JS & DS about their defensive issues on the shot that missed, instead of devising a set to increase the lead from 1 to 3? I said to my wife "We won't score here". And we didn't. And they did. And we're trailing at the half.
And BS hits 2 treys & makes a good drive that results in a CW tip-in, so what happens? He gets pulled for PW, who has been making bad passes & can't make a shot to save his life. Hartsock & Dukes comment about how good a half JB is having, and there's @ 2:20 to go. I say to my wife, "Watch - he won't last the half." She says, "Sure - he must be tired!" Sure enough, he gets pulled for DS with @ 1:30 to go.
DOES ANYONE HERE UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF FLOW?!?!?!
DOES ANYONE HERE UNDERSTAND THAT THE BENCH IS FOR PLAYERS WHO AREN'T PLAYING WELL, AND THE COURT IS FOR PLAYERS WHO ARE PLAYING WELL?!?!?!
TW! DR. C! ARE YOU WATCHING THIS?!?!?!

PW gets the ball at the elbow and dibbles toward half court and then passes backward to JS. Wow, a junior in college and makes junior high offensive mistakes. Then we rotate the ball and throw it to DS, who half-ass tries to catch it. Pathetic.
Spearman played a great half and we are playing PW.

Same reason he splits time right down the middle for DS & JB. DS 0 pts, 2 rbs

Isn't the goal of a team to improve thru the year? What improvement has UD had this year?

That's the problem, Larymike, since the beginning of the year many of the players' games have regressed, in some cases in a big way. Paul Williams is really struggling with shooting and ball handling.

Pretty sure we didn't have a turnover in the 1st 10 minutes, and we now have 10 in the last 12.

Fordham held on against UMass to end their conference losing streak. We'll now be the 7 seed with a win.

We are much better offensively when we penetrate and make the extra pass. Is that so hard to teach and coach? I don't think so!

Oliver walks again. We are not getting it done, as we continue to substitute faster than humanly possible. Isn't it Luke"s turn?

And Devin Searcy makes another turnover. But don't worry. DI basketball isn't important is it, Devin? Jerk. You owe UD tens of thousands of dollars.
