Great scheduling by Dayton. Two buy game teams that punched their ticket. So glad the university ignores media pressure to schedule home and away series with much lesser competition.

In line with the prior "lesser competition" post, Northern Kentucky punches their ticket. Said "lesser competition" lost in the semis. NKU would look good on our schedule next year.

Yes, but only as a buy game.

Might as well get used to playing NKU, as they will be in the A-10 within 5 years, assuming we still are.

So at a minimum (pre-A-10 tourney), the Flyers are 3-3 against the NCAA field -- losses to St. Mary's, Northwestern and VCU; wins against ETSU, Winthrop and VCU. If Rhody and Vanderbilt make the field, that would climb to 6-3. The conference tourney could add or (perish the thought) subtract to that, but overall not too shabby.

That was only a semi-final game for NKU. Final is tomorrow night.

They would be an excellent opponent for the future. Their entire team is very young has gotten better throughout the season, and they are at 90 in the RPI currently. You would have to imagine they would be an excellent team to have on the schedule the next 2 or 3 years.

Absolutely brilliant scheduling by Neil and Archie. The key is scheduling mid majors that will be at the top of their conference and have a good chance to get an NCAA bid. It's almost an automatic top 100 game and a game against a likely tourney team.

Speaking of NKU ...
Why isn't the Cincinnati Post clamoring for a cross-river shootout between NKU and Cincinnati?

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

Because NKU is going to get at least one game or more with UC soon.

UC is renovating 5/3 arena and will not be able to use it next season so they are moving all their games to NKU's arena. Part of the agreement is for a game in the future but they haven't given any details if it's a series or where they will play the game or games.

BTW if you want to see a nice arena you should go to BB&T. Great venue that was built in 2008 and seats 10,000. Easily better than at least half of the A10 venues.

Parking problems have been fixed I think...I was there last year, and things seemed to be running smoothly.

You cleary missed the point. Xavier or Cincinnati has never played in a home and away series with NKU since they became D1 in 2013. An agreement (which I cannot verify in any news I read) to play one game on the road at an arena you get to use as your home floor does not constitute a home and away series.

The point is how ridiculous it is when the DDN (and others) try to compare a Dayton-WSU series to the Crosstown shootout between Xavier and Cinncinati. It's more comparable to a Cincinnati or Xavier - NKU shootout (which does not exist).

Interesting fact though that UC is utilizing NKU's 9400 seat arena during the renovation of their arena next year.

No I got the point and hate the DDN(sans Jablonski) UD/WSU campaign too. I was just pointing out that UC and NKU will be playing a game at some point, but they haven't said where/when yet. I was also pointing out that UC would be playing at NKU next season since you obviously didn't know that so maybe there were some more people who didn't realize that either.

Wright State likely would have been playing the worst team for the title...missed a chance there...sheesh.

Don't forget this is NKU's fourth year in D1, and they have already passed up WSU.

It is a nice facility...only a few years old...I have never been to many of the other A10 venues, but I would argue that NKU's arena is probably better than almost all of the non-UD Arena A10 venues.

Just wondering, about how many people does NKU get at a home game?

They drew 3304 for Valparaiso on Senior Day, a Sunday at 1 PM. About 3k seems to be the pattern of the games I checked.

The most comparable/equal places in my view would Rhody, Richmond, and St. Louis. Then you could discuss Umass, Mason, and maybe Davidson. Beyond that BB&T is definitely better than the rest.

I know little about NKU's program...they were a rival of WSU back in the 70's and 80's when both schools were in d2...I doubt that there is much room for another d1 program in greater Cincinnati, UC is still recovering from the Huggins firing...UC was averaging about 13k a game, basically full capacity, during the Huggins era, they went down to around 6k or 7k I think right after the firing, they are at about 9k now.

I suppose that NKU could get hot though, all of the people in northern Kentucky might want to root for an in-state team, instead of UC, Xavier, etc., or a team closer than UK, Louisville, etc.

ACC Tournament really gets underway today, with a number of bubble teams on the docket.

Clemson v. NC State
Wake Forest v. Boston Coll.
Pitt v. Georgia Tech

I count 4 bubble teams in there alone.

Tomorrow, all the other big tournaments really kick into gear.

That is the key for NKU to improve attendance and appears that they are trying to do exactly that. Arguably their best player went to NewCath, and they have 5 kids from KY on their roster. They have last year's Kentucky Mr. Basketball who went to HS about an hour away from NKU. If they can win some games and do it with local kids they can build their fan base. It's hard to go from tiny Regents Hall to where they are playing now.

Tuesday's already kicked off, Clemson knocked off NC State finishing the tenure of Mark Gottfried. Interestingly, Clemson's stock kept rising after every close loss (and there were lots of them) so I'm just going to assume the 14 point drubbing of the wolfpack means that they fell a few places on the bubble. That is how it works right???

Wake is up early on BC, and should dispatch them, though it would be nice of the Eagle to win another game or two.

As mentioned above the Norse go for the tournament in their first eligible season (why the heck do you have to wait 4 seasons anyways, what is the point?)

Pitt takes on GTech

St Mary's vs Gonzaga later tonight (doesn't seem like there will be many, if any bid stealers this season, which has been the norm for the last few)

What campaign? I suppose it goes in cycles, but I can't remember the last time I saw it mentioned in the paper. Maybe one time in a Brian Kollars column this season. It's mentioned here more often.

Which 4? If you're throwing Pitt in there, you must be a massive ACC and P5 apologist.

Arkansas St. and Penn St. both play in opening rounds of their conference tournaments today. Reason it is important is both teams are just slightly ahead of GW, who sits at #101 in the RPI. A loss by either probably drops them behind GW and pushes GW into the top-100, giving us back only 1 sub-100 RPI loss. Sadly, they are both likely favored in their games.

Of course, Nebraska is at #95, so if they lose, they'll probably fall out of the top-100... so really want Nebraska to win that one.

Penn St. v. Nebraska at 4:30
Arkansas St. v. La. Monroe at 3 PM

Today starts, what I consider the best 5 days in college basketball. For as much fun as the first 2 rounds, perhaps even the first weekend of the tournament are, there are typically more well fought games in the conference tournaments leading up to selection Sunday. You've got teams fighting to make a last impression, teams trying to hang on, teams from smaller conference trying to get their 1 shining moment, teams hoping to move up a seed line, teams just hoping that their season doesn't end when the clock his 0.

Most of the top teams in each conference still don't enter the mix until tomorrow, or even the next day depending on when their finals are, but there are bubble games and seed line games galore starting today, as well as a few games that directly impact UD:

Miami v Syracuse (+1.5)
Clemson v Duke (-7.5)
Penn St v Nebraska (+2)
St Joes v UMass (-3.5)
Wake v V Tech (+2.5)
Okie v TCU (-2)
Duquesne v St Louie (+2.5)
Pitt v Virginia (-9)
DePaul v X (-9)

Syracuse falls to Miami, projected rpi in the 80s, say hello NIT, though I'm sure Dukey V will lament that they deserve a shot.

St. Mary's has 4 losses... 3 to Gonzaga, and 1 at home to UT-Arlington.

St. Mary's will lose their opening round game to anyone with athleticism. We should've beaten them, but we were hurting without Josh and KP both. And still almost pulled it out with Sam Miller playing 22 minutes.

It will be interesting as all get out. Hasn't the committee chair said only wins matter. Losses don't. They have 6 top 50 wins and 9 top 100. that is 9-10 vs the top 100 but I think the most interesting thing is that only 1 of those 9 wins are on the road. The win was at Clemson.

Of course! They'll factor in the number of games/losses Syr had while Boeheim was serving his suspension. Wait...that was last year.

Syracuse drops to 85 in Live RPI.

That would be BY FAR the worst RPI of an at-large team to make the field. Their record is something like 2-12 away from home. I don't care that they beat Duke. They don't belong.

That said, they'll put them in as an 11 against us again.

I guess they could get a "home" game in the NCAA tournament. Put 'Cuse in the first four as an 11 seed, opposite that school down south and it will feel just like the Carrier dome

It's nice to see, but doesn't really help much. The true measuring stick is wins against the "at large field" and wins against teams being considered in the "at large field".

That said, they'll put them in as an 11 against us again.
Updated ESPN Bubble Watch. This ACC worshiping has to stop. There is NO WAY Syracuse should make it. NO WAY.

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/bubblewatch

Syracuse [18-14 (10-8), RPI: 75, SOS: 59] Syracuse went one-and-done in the ACC tournament, losing Wednesday's No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchup with Miami. That leaves the Orange -- or at least Orange fans -- in an unenviable position. There are few forms of hoops torture so exquisite as the anxiety of being on the bubble but out of action during Champ Week, helpless to decide your own fate. As of now, we still think the Cuse are more likely than not to get in, having done enough down the back half of their season, in a loaded ACC, to counteract early struggles against UConn, St. John's and Boston College. An 18-14 record and ugly RPI and nonconference schedule numbers remain a concern, but the biggest worry now is what will happen elsewhere on the bubble -- whether (and how many) teams will show up in the coming days and earn wins that propel up the bubble and past Jim Boeheim's team. All there is to do now is wait, and hope.

Cuse being in is ludicrous. Only 2 road/neutral wins. Flaming out in the ACC tourney. Getting blown out by St. John's at home. If they have to be in, put them in a play-in game against the team that starts with the letter after W.

Pure garbage. Non con SOS 188. Only played one game outside the state of New York before Jan. 1st, because they had a required road game in the ACC/B10 challenge. 3 losses outside the top 100 (one was 200+). ONLY 2 WINS away from home?!?!?!

They do have 6 Top 50 wins and 9 Top 100 wins. But I really feel they need to be punished for such a sh!tty non schedule and crappy losses. The message it would send is that ALL of the games don't count. Only the P5 have the opportunity to "erase" their warts from the first half of the season.

A few random scores & thoughts:
-Mizzou is playing like a team that thinks they have a future. Currently on top in their SEC tourney game.
-Pitt is "gathering steam", trailing Virginia in the first half by 8.
-The "hog slaughter" is underway at MSG. DePaul leading X by 4, 25-21, with @ 3:00 to go in the first half.

Did you guys see the City of Greensboro's Twitter account crack on Boeheim for his comments about the ACC tournament being there?

Another big day on the hardwoood:

Davidson v LaSalle (I'll take another shot at Davidson coming off no rest)
Miami v UNC-ch
Illinois v Michigan
UT-San Antonio v Middle Tenn St (favored by 16 but can't afford a slip up here)
Okie St vs Iowa St
Duke v Louisville
Penn St v Mich St (MSU can't afford a loss here)
UMass v Bona (go Bona, a win probably locks them into the top 100)
TCU v Kansas (would an upset propel TCU into the field?)
Hall v Marquette (bubblicious)
Utah St v Nevada (Nevada represents the 1 potential at large bid for the MWC)
Miss St v Bama
Cal v Utah (Cal needs this one bad)
New Mexico v Fresno St (New Mexico has sucked for a couple of weeks now)
Fordham v Mason (go Mason, probably need 2 wins to lock themselves into the top 100)
Indiana v Iowa (Iowa is all of a sudden popping up on bubble watches)
Xavier v Butler (an X win and everything is sunny, a loss would make for a nervous few days)
Vtech v Florida State (go Free Shoes U, as VTech is in the same seed area as UD)
aTm v Vandy
SLU v GW (GW may lock themselves into top 100 w/ a win, it will be close)
Rutgers v NW (I'd actually say go Rutgers as UD is in the same seed area as NW)
Virginia v ND (not sure who to root for)
K State v Baylor (go bears)
Creighton v Providence (probably go Friars)
USC v UCLA (go bruins)

Plus a handful of games b/w ranked teams that UD has no chance of passing vs teams no where near the field.

That would be BY FAR the worst RPI of an at-large team to make the field. Their record is something like 2-12 away from home. I don't care that they beat Duke. They don't belong.

That said, they'll put them in as an 11 against us again.

The latest DC has the Syracuse rpi at 71, and they are only 4 spots below the cut line....and 2 of the 3 teams ahead of them are not getting in IMO: Monmouth and UT Arlington....so they are basically the second team out right now IMO.

Illinois State might get in.

I will not be at all surprised to see Syracuse get an at-large bid.

Dance Card uses the old RPI formula as they discovered it works better for their system. What that means in the selection room I have no idea, I doubt they are paying attention to dance card, nor to they have a clue what any teams RPI would be under the old system.

Worse case scenario: _avier vs 'Cuse in the First Four. That way all neutral fans can boo the entire game.

Still rather see them in the NIT, but this would be best case scenario if they made it. Then get plastered by 30 against the #5 or #6 in the next round

SLU is headed the right direction. They actually looked pretty good in the second half against us at Chaifetz, and they have 5 transfers who will be playing for them next year.

They will be above .500 in the A10 next year.

Davidson up 18 on the dumpster fire known as the LaSalle Explorers, gotta hope the gap closes so Aldridge and Gibbs have to stay on the floor longer, their minutes played just became our focus of this current game.

Watching to try to determine which team I want to see play the Flyers tomorrow. No 8 seed LaSalle, whom we defeated by 10 at home to open the A10 in late December appeared to be giving that honor to no. 9 Davidson, whom we beat at Davidson in OT on February 24 with Scoochie's great OT.

LaSalle is mounting a comeback. Just hope if they don't come all the way back that Gibbs and Aldridge, who both scored 27 against us, are exhausted tomorrow in Pittsburgh.

We play Davidson. I like the fact that the game is not at Davidson. Go Flyers!

Good news is Aldridge and Gibbs had to play most of the game. Tighten up on D on the back door cuts. Also, be physical and get their bigs in foul trouble.

4 out of 5 starters player 32 minutes or more including 40 by Aldridge and 38 by Gibbs.

I thought the good Dr. screwed up when he called timeout with 4:27 to go in the game when LaSalle had just cut it to 3 and Davidson was reeling.

Aldridge is the best junior in the A10. He ate up LaSalle today, and ate us up last week. We have to defend him without foul trouble... key to the game.

Hate to disappoint everyone, but Xavier looking like a tournament team tonight. They'll be in win or lose. Hopefully not in the First Four as I'd prefer to enjoy Tuesday and Wednesday.

Yep, If there was doubt before tonight, beating a Top 25 team tonight shows they may have righted the ship. Might still be a 10 Seed, but they're in.

Quality coverage by NBC Sports too "GW entered the tournament as the hottest team in the league, having won 6 straight coming off a blowout win over league champion Dayton"

Just curious on everyone else's standards, but what constitutes a blowout?

They played way over their heads against us and made shots they hadn't made all year. Their luck may be running out.

Illinois may well have fallen to the wrong side of the bubble with their 20-point loss to Michigan today. Dance Card had them as the last team in as of last night. But, with 4 of the next 5 on Dance Card unlikely to gain ground, the Illini may still get in (and Maverick Morgan may yet play a collegiate game at The Arena).

Granted, they were up by double digits for much of the game, but they were sweating it in the closing minutes. And they're a good team that was on a roll when we played them, but if they could shoot every night like they shot against us that night, they'd be a favorite to make the Sweet Sixteen. Still, they could make it to Saturday in Pittsburgh, if they can only figure out SLU tonight.

It was a first-half blowout, but I'd say a six-point win in what was a tight game the last couple of minutes does not constitute a blowout.

Apart from UMass (!), our losses are -- oddly -- by 6,5,4,3 and 2 points.

And the team that "blew us out" by 6, and scored 50 in the first half just last Saturday is trailing SLU by 12 at the half today, 25-13. Yes, 13 points in 20 minutes.

It's no different than if UD beat someone by 8-10 points but had a 15-20 point lead most of the game and one of their fans told you it was really close you'd argue back that UD dominated the game and it really wasn't that close.

tOSU sad state of affairs

I watched a little Northwestern vs Rutgers last nite. It appears that NW placed a big hit early on to the Knights like NW did to us earlier in the season.

At one point NW had a 31-zip run before Rutgers was able to score another basket. You read that right Three - One to NADA!

And tOSU struggled againt the mighty Scarlet Knights. Geez!

tOSU certainly has got some issues and the trend has been that way for the past 2 seasons (countin this one).

I'd imagine by this time tomorrow, most of the field will be set, all that will remain is the seeding, probably not a good day to lose if you are a bubble team. This is about as good a day of college hoops as you're going to get; for roughly 14 hours you will have a compelling game on TV somewhere with significant implications for one or both of the teams:

Michigan v Purdue
UTEP v Middle Tenn St
Coastal Carolina v UT-Arlington
Georgia v Kentucky
Mich St v Minnesota
Bona v Rhody
Bama v S Carolina
Mason v VCU
Indiana v Wisky
Hall v Nova
Vandy v Florida (can they pull of the 3 game sweep?)
TCU v Iowa St
Duke v Carolina (rubber match)
GW v Richmond
Northwestern v Maryland
Notre Dame v Florida St
Xavier v Creighton
Kansas St v WVU
Cal v Oregon
Ole Miss v Arkansas
Fresno St v Nevada
UCLA v Arizona

Davidson losing 35-25 to RI with 6 to go in the first, on 7 RI threes.

Ky up on AL by 3 with 4 to go in the first. Those two announcers, Dickie V and, are so pro KY it is silly to listen to.

RI up 46-34 at the half on 8 threes. Gibbs and Aldridge have 5 baskets combined. Davidson playing tired and without emotion.

They would have much rather played us with a chance at a quality win than Davidson, which doesn't help their resume at all. They need to win the tourney
