ISU Tournament

A couple interesting facts about this weekend:

This will be our toughest weekend this year. Iowa State is ranked #21 after going 19-11 last year. They made it to round 2 of the NCAAs, but only lost 2 seniors -- and only one of those started -- a very good OH they will need to replace. The other senior was a DS from Iowa and probably a walk-on. So they probably only had one open scholarship -- but brought in 6 freshmen that earned the #8 best recruiting class in the country. That is beyond impressive. They have a great coach. This will be her 11th season. Christy Johnson-Lynch. She was the starting setter at Nebraska in 1995 when they won the National Championship. Great player that has transitioned into a great coach. She has taken the Cyclones to 5 appearances in the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 out of her 10 at ISU. Dayton will be their first match of the season at 7:30 pm on Friday.

Marquette -- Solid program that beat us up at Michigan in 2009 (if I remember the year correctly). I was there and we should have won that match. Their coach is Ryan Theis -- who took over last year. Prior to that, he was head coach at Ohio. As a program we have played him many times, but not under Horsmon. Prior to Ohio, he was an assistant at Florida. Marquette went 24-9 last year. They were upset in the first round of the NCAAs last year by Illinois State -- a team we play later this year. Marquette has a bunch of redshirt players -- 6, but only 3 freshmen. They lost only 1 senior that was a contributor last year, but they also lost 3 players that played in more than 90 of their 120 sets. A freshman setter and their two best OHs. Both were sophomores. That happens sometimes with a coaching change -- so count our blessings it did not at Dayton after last year.

North Dakota -- Also has a 2nd year coach (3 of the schools in tourney have 2nd year coaches - although Horsmon is in his 2nd era at UD). Mark Pryor. He had a dream first year. Set a record for most wins for the program (26-9). Won the conference regular season. Won the conference tournament. Made the NCAAs and lost in the 1st round. ND will be looking to knock off ANYONE this weekend. Dayton plays them the first match of the season. We need to be ready or a team like ND -- who we should beat -- could pull off the win if we take them lightly. First match of the season is a good time to knock off someone.

Replay Equipment.

I forgot to mention -- the Big 10 is testing several different types of replay equipment this year. Iowa State test drove one during it's pre-season scrimmage this past weekend. They had 4 challenged calls. The writeup said mainly it was "in the net" calls. All 4 were overturned with the replay. Very interesting.

I don't know if the equipment will be used during the tournament and I don't know what the "rules" will be to use it. For example, does a coach have 2 challenges per set???? But, if they are testing equipment -- I would tend to think it will be used during all matches this year at Big 10 schools. That is of course a guess.

Dayton has sent out match notes for this game. They list the projected starters as the following:

Amber Erhahon and Angel Agu at MB
Janna Krafka at Libero
Jane Emmenecker at Setter
Jenna Jendryk as RS (Right side, right? not receiving specialist?)
Jessica Sloan and Alaina Turner as OH.

Surprised Sloan is listed in the starters instead of Loiars. But, I wonder if that is just a factor of how they start. For instance, does Sloan start in the back left position, so she's immediately subbed in by Loiars or something.

Jess playing back row makes sense to start the match. You would not start Jill in the back row and use a sub to bring in Jess. That would waste one of your subs.

Glad to see Amber listed. Hope she has recovered. Same with Jane.

Also -- I posted ND went to the NCAAs last year. They did not. I read their coaches bio and it sounded like they won the conference which would imply they got the auto bid. Creative writing I guess. My mistake. The conference is split into two regions and they won't their region.

Now -- on to fun facts about Ames. I arrived late this afternoon. I majored in print journalism at Iowa State, but haven't been back in 1 or 2 decades. The campus of course has GROWN. While attending, we knew the school owned a lot of land South of campus -- but the vet school use to be out in the country. Not so much now! lol

I had forgotten when you exit I35 North to reach Ames, the first street you come to it DAYTON AVENUE. Hope the team flew into Des Moines instead of Ames so they got to experience that. Of course when I went here -- Dayton Avenue was in the country too. lol Now its a street with hotels and restaurants on the East side of town.

In the center of campus is a clock-bell tower. Campus lore is if a virgin is kissed under the bell tower a brick will fall off. BREAKING NEWS -- the bell tower is still 100% in tack.

I read in the df.com tournament write up that UD won the first meeting between Iowa State and UD in 1978 in a 3-0 sweep. Well let me tell you I was shocked. I arrived at ISU in the fall of 1978. I wrote for the student newspaper as a sports reporter that year and we covered zero women's volleyball. I was going to write herein that ISU didn't have a volleyball program when I went here -- but apparently I was wrong. I can tell you no one at the Iowa State Daily sports staff had women's volleyball on their radar screen. I do wonder if it might have been a new club program at that point. I did cover a little club hockey my freshman year, but the club hockey program had been around for a long time. No one covered women's volleyball -- and I had played a little high school volleyball -- so I probably would have been assigned the coverage. Thus my guess it was a newer club sport in 1978.

Finally, the df.com write up says we last played Marquette in 1999 -- when we were in the same conference. We lost to Marquette 2-3 in 2009 up at Michigan. I was at that match and it's one we should have won. I hope we avenge that loss this weekend and maybe knock off a ranked team tomorrow night. But first up is North Dakota and we need to take care of them to get the season started right.

Go Flyers!!!

Just looked for Audio from North Dakota, but there isn't any. But, I found their Game Notes, and they have the old UD logo.

Ugh.

In this morning's Ames Tribune -- private ad under Homes For Sale -- someone has renovated Johnny Orr's old home and it's for sale -- in case anyone wants some ISU basketball history. Didn't list the price.

Everyone warming up except Lizzte and Brianna. Also Jenna's got her jump serve going again so he knee must be back. Last year she didn't jump serve after hurting it 2 years ago serving in the A10 tourney

Megan came in to serve so I think that means Katie set from a front row rotation. I'll have to watch when it comes around again. I'd up 17-14

I'd actually running a 5-1 offense but it looks like we are sharing setting duties. 6 rotations with Megan and then 6 with Katie. ND up 24-23

Time to regroup for second set. We had some passing errors late and some timing issues with the hitters. Two new setters running the show. Everyone needs to pick it up. We are better than ND. They just hung in there and we started making errors. We also need to close our blocks. Margo wolf got in and passed well

Very nice comeback from Dayton. Those first two sets were close losses. Both the 3rd and 4th sets have been strong for UD. 25-15 win for UD in the 3rd and the Flyers up 18-10 now in the 4th. Really strong performance from Loiars and great start for Giardina. Giardina is giving the Flyers assists and is keeping the ball alive with 10 digs. That's second only to Krafka. (and we know how good she is)

I'm only watching by stats, but it appears that Jill/Jenna must be sharing right side duties, with Alaina and Sloan going all around. (Though, it looks like they started subbing Margo Wolf for Sloan in the 4th set.)

Wow must be a major hole in our defense. Gave up huge leads in sets 1, 3, and 5. Way too many errors. At least they put up a fight but its going to get worse before it gets better. ISU tonight #18 in country.

Not the best start for our athletic programs this year.

This is the first time since Dec 2009 where a player had at least 20 assists, yet no kill attempts.

Will be interesting to see how the coaches and team respond to gifting this one to ND. Tough, tough, tough decisions to be made at setter. Jane did not travel with the team this weekend. The one secondary setter on the team that did not play that position this match is Jenna Jendryk. She is a senior and asking her to consider playing setter again after she sacrificed one year already doing that is a tough call -- but it might have to come to that if Jane won't be back anytime soon. I have no idea if Jenna has even taken any reps in pre-season practice at setter, so it might not even be an option this weekend.

Also learned Krafka played setter in high school. Margo Wolf played great for a freshman in her first college match. She is going to be un-real in the back court. Wonder if Krafka can block????

Tonight's match with ISU will be streamed. Will be nice to have more eyes on the match.

Blocking

I forgot to mention we had holes in our block all day and we were a little slow to get up when they set the low-quick set to the middle for a fast swing down the middle.

Both Amber and Angel have shown in the past they are good blockers -- so I'm not sure what the problem was because they were not closing the blocks and in a lot of cases they weren't even getting in the air. It very well could have been something ND's setter was doing to freeze our block.

I'll be watching to see if we make adjustments tonight. The good news is our OH's had a good night blocking. So if we can clean up this area, we will stop some good hitters. I'll be looking for both more block, but also more block touches -- were we get our hands on the ball but don't stop it. In 2009 and 2010 we had one of the Top 5 blocking teams in the country. But in 2008 I remember we had a ton of block touches that we could just not complete the block that year. If you can get your hands on the ball -- even if it's just a block touch right now -- it's the first step in moving towards becoming a great blocking team.

Also - Horsmon got a yellow card late in this match. He was upset on about 4-5 calls during the match and when he informed the refs about a 2nd call that was just like an earlier one -- out came the yellow. I know on one call against Jess Sloan -- TH was 100% correct. She was at the net and had her hands up in front of her -- in a get ready for a block position -- and the ball hit her hands in that position off a shank and went over the net. The refs called it a double hit and that was wrong. If your hands are in that block-ready position -- the ball can pop off them even if you don't leave the ground and not be a double.

The other calls I can't comment on. I was too far off the net to see what TH was questioning.

ISU 3 Flyers 1

25-20, 22-25, 18-25,21-25

Flyers score first 8 points of match and hold on for first set. After that, while competitive, Flyers were really not able to take command of any of the last 3 sets.

Fall Flyer sports teams now 0-6. Ouch.

Glad to see we battled against #21 team in the rankings. And we really battled. In set 4 -- both teams were running low on subs because no one could score more than 1 or 2 points at a time. Was really proud we bounced back after losing to ND -- a match we should have won. Would have loved to have both these matches with Jane setting -- but you have to go with who is healthy and so it is what it is.

ND gave Marquette everything they could handle. We will have to get after them tomorrow and finish this weekend strong.

We got better this match and corrected some things. Our block is inconsistent and we leave a lot of OHs alone at the net with 1-on-1 chances and the hitters usually win that.

Iowa State's Libero is suppose to be the best in the nation. I was more impressed with ND's Libero. And of course I think Janna is great. A lot of balls served AWAY from Janna. Same with attacks. She is that good. And for the record -- she use to be a setter growing up -- but did not set in high school. But her skills at setting from the Libero position is really, really good. So glad she played the position along the way even if it was years ago. lol.

Two most startling stats

For BOTH matches today -- we had more kills than either ND or ISU and we scored more points than either. You usually win when you do that. The difference was we committed too many errors scoring too many points for the opposition. Need to clean up our side of the net. It's a work in progress.

Spoke to some ISU fans at the hotel this morning. All were VERY complimentary about our team's performance last night against ISU. None of them knew we did not have our starting setter on the trip. After that they were even more complimentary.

Gotta have another performance of improvement today against Marquette and we can win. Go Flyers!

On a side-note...one of the couples was from northwestern Iowa. No family on the team -- they just like to come and support the program. They have season tickets and come down for all home matches staying overnight at a hotel. This is were the sport is going -- with fans traveling to support teams just like football and men's basketball. You use to see this at NE and HI but now you find this at more and more programs -- even those that have not won a national championship.

beckystxa,

Great info. I also noticed that UD had more kills in those matches and hoped that someone could explain it. Great to hear that Margo played so well.

The only issue that Janna has to worry about is getting bored, not expecting a team to serve to her. You could go through a total rotation without a serve and then suddenly they serve one to you. Being ready for that takes a lot of concentration

Clean Up Out Errors

That should be a major focus this week in practice. We averaged 10.5 errors per set this past weekend. The following is how many points we lost sets by:

2/5/3/2/3/7/4/4/2/10

If we can cut those errors down 3-4 per set -- look at how many sets we would have won this past weekend. Granted we mailed in the last set -- but we clean up some errors and we get a lot better right away.

A couple of years ago with a new coach, the team started badly and ended badly, with not much in between. Hopefully this team can be more like last year's basketball team, that started badly, played pretty well in the league and were awesome at the end.

Becky...speaking stats, what exactly is an 'error'? My daughter plays OH on her high school team and I'm trying to grasp the rules and stats...and failing miserably.

Also, what defines a 'kill'? Does it have to be a hard shot or does it count if you dink it over the defenders outstretched arms and it falls for a point?

Thanks.

First - anything that hits the floor -in court -is counted as a kill. It can be a full swing that blisters the defense. It can be a dink. It can be a "free-ball" that the other team messes up and doesn't play. It can be a total mistake of a hit - like the ball bouncing off your daughter by mistake, goes over the net and it still hits the floor -- it counts as a kill.

There are a bunch of different errors. Hitting/attack errors are a swing that never crosses the net. A swing that falls out of bounds -- without being touched by the other team. A swing that is blocked is counted as both a block for the other team and a hitting error for the hitter. This is true even when the setter sets a bad ball and the hitter has zero pray to do anything with it. It's and error against the hitter. I also believe the hitter is credited an error if they hit the antenna or are in the net on their swing.

There are blocking errors -- this is when a player is in the net on a block.

There are ball-handing errors -- these are usually when a play is called for a "double" -- meaning they touch the ball twice -- usually when setting the ball. But these can also be a "lift". And those usually happen when a ball is bouncing low below the net and a player tries to keep it live and ends up "lifting" the ball rather than a clean bounce off her hands. And occasionally a player -- usually a hitter will kind of catch the ball and direct it back over the net -- versus a clean "bounce" off a swing.

There are receiving errors -- meaning the other team just scored a service ace. For college, most teams today are showing these as "team" errors in their stats versus a mark against an individual player.

And service errors -- your serve went out of bounds.

Off the top of my head that is most of the errors. One thing I don't know is how it shows up on the stat sheet if your team is out-of-rotation and the other team gets the point???? And I can't remember if a team (i.e. coach) gets a red card -- I think the other team gets a point on a red card????? but not sure since it rarely happens -- and I don't know how that shows up on the stat sheet.
