First Quarter of the Season Grades

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Now that the Flyers are one-fourth (26.7%, actually) thru the 2015-2016 hoops campaign, “FTS” thought it might be a good time to take a look at how the Red and Blue are performing individually. Coming off a big roadie over the Commodores in Nashville, the team is 7-1, starting to gel and the six new faces are all making their presence felt.

Players

Scoochie Smith: A

The man with the best nickname in college basketball has been the steadiest performer in the Flyer lineup. His closing ability in Orlando was invaluable in the two wins there. Key area of improvement is his ability to finish at the rim.

Kendall Pollard: A

Still trying to adjust to having a big man in the middle with whom he has to share space, but his performance vs. Vandy was vintage KP, including this three point ‘dagger’: https://pbs.twimg.com/tweet_video/CV35nQzU4AAmm3Y.mp4

Kyle Davis: B

KD is one of those guys who must be graded separately for both sides of the floor. His D is always an A+; his offense is still kinda hit or miss. A strong finisher, he needs to shoot the three ball with confidence.

Darrell Davis: B

Baby D is still searching for a consistent three point stroke this season. He has, however, expanded his game to include drives and mid-range shots. His D at the end of the first half vs. Vandy was the key to the Flyers’ comeback.

Steve McElvene: A-

The big man is progressing every time he hits the floor. Steve got schooled by Jalen Reynolds of X, but learned some valuable lessons that he put to good use vs. Vandy’s bona fide five man. His ceiling is unlimited.

Sam Miller: B-

The DC product looked semi-lost early in the season, but his performance in Nashville boosted his stock going forward. Not afraid to take shots from the land of plenty, Sam just needs to make more of them.

Charles Cooke: A-

Charles has been a mostly steady performer offensively but has had some brief periods where he simply disappeared. His defense and ball-handling are both much better than advertised.

Ryan Mikesell: B

The kid can shoot the trey, but the question with him is can he defend? Never saw the floor vs. Vandy. I love the ‘back-door-ability’ that he has flashed on several occasions. He’ll figure it out.

John Crosby: B-

I think if we all look back at Scoochie’s freshman campaign and how he sometimes struggled, we will quickly realize what we have in JC. Expect some big things from Crosby the rest of the way.

Xeyrius Williams: B

X has the tools to excel at both ends of the floor and has shown a willingness to mix it up on the boards. Hit a huge three in the Vandy game at a critical juncture.

Bobby Wehrli: C

Bobby’s role will be further reduced once DP returns, but he provides Archie with a dependable presence off the bench. Every good team needs a Bobby Wehrli.

Dyshawn Pierre: Withdrawn -- but he should be back in the saddle in a mere 12 days!

Coaching

Archie Miller: A

AM has continued to use the entire roster, giving everyone valuable game-time experience that will pay dividends when the A-10 slate commences on January 2nd in Pittsburgh.

Crowd

UD Arena: A

The home crowd atmosphere at UD Arena continues to be one of the best in college basketball.

Road: A+

The Flyer Faithful in Orlando for the AdvoCare Invitational “dominated” as Archie put it. Hearing the “Let’s Go Flyers” cheers during the end of the Vandy game was equally impressive.
