Marist at Dayton Game Thread
Much on the line today for the Flyers.... Win and we have at least a share of the PFL title, if Drake wins at Butler as well, we will host the Gridiron Classic, most likely against Central Conneticut State University. Lose, and we come in second.... As the saying goes, "nobody remembers who comes in second...."

1st and goal=0 points
Have to improve the offensive line next year. Our running game, less Tino's scrambles, is dreadful. Improve the running game and we will be unstopable.

we punt, touchback. Flyers out of sync at the moment. Dominating the game AGAIN, but only up 4 due to penalities and POOR kicking....

7-6 at the half
Marist mistakes are hurting them. Two penalties in two trips to the red zone Flyer offense, or should I say lack of, hurts us

Marist
is doing a good job exposing our weakness.... No running game and terrible kicking.... They are also throwing long often. Here is to hoping that they do not hit one. Our redzone offense has been terrible. At least we have not turned it over.... That blocking below the waist penalty also hurt bad.... You just cannot make mistakes when you are playing a good team. We need to contain Marist's QB better as well. He is starting to run all over us....
Need to step it up, or this season will end on a big downer....

Drake at Butler
tied at 3 at the half. Kind of unexpected. Here is to hoping Drake steps it up in the second half.

What a red zone challenged offense.
Two missed FG
Mack/Jacob had 8 carries for net 9 yards. This stinks bad! Linebackers run through hole of pulling lineman and tackle carriers for no gain.
How about a punt into the end zone? Might as well go quick kicks, punter challenged too.

Wow
third and goal at the 2 for the Flyers.... We have to call a TO.... Well, this is oddly about as bad as it can get for the Flyers.... IF we had a running game, we could use it here. Being as we do not, who knows what this call will be.... Well, Tino runs it in....

Strange TD run by Tino. Kinda get behind the tackle & end and push forward.
Shows you what the staff thinks of RB chance for 2 yards
Goal line plays don't need pulling linemen, just PUSH

See what happens when Debowski has protection. Yes, he had plenty of time standing alone then throwing a 77 yard TD.
Defense playing with fire if they don't pressure their QB!!!!!!!!!!

Now we are
getting smoked by the long pass. Remember how many times Marist tried in the first half? They must see a weakness in our defense....

That loss to Butler at Welcome was sooooo expensive for the team & individual awards.

Butler. They have earned a truly charmed season. I wonder how many teams win conferences with so many close games. A sign of good coaching and talented players. Butler put up 31 on our Flyers. They made our very good defense look very bad.
The post season awards will be interesting. Being "Co-Champions" will help. I have not seen Tino's numbers versus Huck's numbers today, but I think Tino still might be offensive player of the week and have the inside track for POY. Good lesson for the underclassmen as well. You have to play well EVERY week these days if you are going to win the PFL. One bad week, and you are not the champs....

Tino 19/27-275 yds 2-TD, 0-int.
Rush 19 for 86 yards, 1-TD
Huck 24/35-234 yards 1-TD, 1-int & a championship!
Rush 6 for (-23)
Winner gets the spoils.
Wait till we get to see the JU QB stats!
Well we got them:
Josh McGregor 22/36-222 yards, 2-TD, 0-int.
Rush 2 times for (-2)

What a difference a half makes. Nate Miller comes back from suspension but has lost his skill as a place kicker. So the deposed Glavin comes in the 2nd half and kicks two FG's to seal the win.
Then after 9 net yards for the RB's in the 1st half (as I sarcastically posted) they end with 97 yards, the best of the season. Now that "smells" much better.
How to figure sports?

Just some statistics to prove that Dayton's offensive line is extremely underrated...
- 2 of the top 10 PFL rushers play for Dayton
- # 4 in PFL for overall offense
- # 2 in PFL for pass offense
- # 1 in PFL for sacks against
- in 2008 Dayton attempted 425 passes...only 18 sacks
- in 2009 Dayton attempted 337 passes...only 16 sacks
- over the past 2 seasons, there have been only 34 sacks over 762 passing attempts...that is 1 sack every 22 attempts or 4 percent of the time
the offensive line as cohesive a unit as UD has had in years and it shows in the way they play.

Hmmmm.... I wonder if you might be an offensive lineman...? I agree that the line is underrated. Part of that is our unconventional offense, as in Tino. Our "traditional" running game seems to struggle until the other team is worn down.... Of course that is also a sign that the Flyers line is just in better shape than the opposition's defensive line! Our running game is kind of like our kicking game.... If it is 3rd and one and we run out of the "I" in a power formation, there just is not much confidence that we can make it.... About the same feeling we have when lining up for a FG. Granted, we do make it sometimes, (the first down and the FG), but to say we are confident is not exactly true.
It also takes some good line skills to hold blocks for a scrambling QB like Tino. MANY other teams would hold every time.... Not the Flyers! Yeah, now that I think of it, the offensive line does do many things well!
Thanks for the excellent summary by the way, and welcome to the board!

Great Job Football Flyers!
After a scary start, these Football Flyers found the handle and performed admirably all season long! God bless Valentino for stepping up and taking on the QB position. Congratulations to Coach Chamberlin and his excellent staff too.
I, for one, am excited to see Butler re-emerge as a competitor. This could make for a great rivalry between two esteemed schools, close enough to visit. One thing that would add to the potential football rivalry would be to schedule a Butler basketball home and home series.
As for next season would the UD athletic department PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ramp up the marketing effort for football? When the Dragons can fill 8300 seats every night for several years now, I must believe that UD football could do as well, given proper marketing attention.
One more thing...other than Central...are we done with D-2 and D-3 teams, I hope?
Can we schedule Youngstown, an Ivy or a Patriot league team? Heck I'd be happy with Georgetown (DC)!!!

Ivy, Patriot...
Chris, you'd "be happy with Georgetown, DC"? GU wouldn't travel to Dayton under any circumstance. The Ivys and Pats are very sensitive to travel costs. When Yale played at UD in 2004 it was the first time in the 1000 years of Yale football that they traveled by plane. Think about that.
If you go to Wikipedia and enter the names of each league a map is shown indicating the locations of the Ivy and Pat schools. Those maps show that the schools in those leagues are very close together. Planes are not part of their travel arrangements for away games.
The Dartmouth AD said that he tried to get a home-and-home with Georgtown and was told that they would love to play Dartmouth;.....but no way will they travel to New Hampshire.
If UD wants to play Ivys, and perhaps Pats, it's going to be on their fields. And, I think UD should do just that once in a while without a return game. Any way Dayton can get its name in the same sentence with an Ivy school should be jumped at, in my opinion. You are judged by the company you keep.
Meanwhile, UD's football program is pretty darn good by just about any measure;....on the field performance, attendance, etc. According to Sagarin's rankings UD would fit right in the middle of either the Ivy or Pat league.
If there is one weakness it seems to be a very timid approach to promoting and marketing UD football. UD has provided free admission for volleyball and scoccer at times (all the time?);...I suggest the same for football to get fannies in the seats and to jazz up the atmosphere. There would be some money from concessions, which would help. But the revenue from ticket sales is small anyway, why not try free admission? It would be an interesting experiment to try for one game just to see if it made a difference in attendance. Maybe it wouldn't.
