Last Home Games of the Year

Tonight we get to play George Washington, in what should be a good match. We did sweep them a month ago in DC, and since that time, they are 4-1, losing only to Rhode Island. (Of course, losing to La Salle, Duquesne, Fordham or Mason is a bad pill to swallow in A10 VB.) They have 3 losses (SLU, DAY, and URI - all at home, too.) and are still vying for the #2 spot.

George Mason comes to town on Sunday night while the Flyers celebrate Senior Night.

Alaina Turner (#7 kills all-time) and Janna Krafka (#2 digs all-time) have put up awesome career numbers, and Jill Loiars (#25 block-assists all-time), Jenna Jendryk (#15 assists all-time) and Angel Agu (#28 block-assists all-time) have been great in their supporting roles. (Because outside of Libero, Setter, and L-OH#1, you're just a supporting role.)

1 victory out of their last 3 A10 games guarantees the #1 spot. (Currently at approximately 98.5% of possibilities.)

Go Flyers!

At the Break

16-25 GDub in set 1.
25-17 Flyers in set 2.

We came out really really flat. Picked it up in second set. Third set will be key.

Wow-What a Match

17-15 Flyers in the fifth after dropping set 3 (21-25) and winning set 4 (27-25).

Down 8-12 in the fifth. Blew one match point at 14-13. Saved a match point against at 14-15 on an unbelievable one hand stab dig by Sloan. Fans and Red Scare were awesome at the end of the last set.

Horsmon junked the 6-2 after the first set for a 5-1 with Emmenecker. Giardina wasn't getting it done on this night.

A-10 Champs. Sweet.

One of the best matches ever at UD. So proud of this UD team, all of them. This was a team effort to come back when on the brink of defeat. Onto Senior Day vs GM then to tournament. Great crowd attending tonight also.

I doubt I'm alone in this comment -- I thought we were toast more than once in this match. But the team kept fighting back and pulled it out.

I was semi-watching the video stream, so I wasn't charting anything -- like how Megan was doing setting. But what I did see in set 1 was GW hitters were killing us in finding the open court in the back row. In a 6-2 you also leave more "space" defensively in the back row. Yes and OH is suppose to drop back to defend -- and immediately get into position to attack. But more often than not, you end up with your Libero and DS defending the entire back -- which is difficult against good hitters -- and GW has good hitters.

All that said, I think Jane is the better setter between her and Megan. So it certainly could have been her setting. I noticed in set 1 Megan only had 2 assists -- and when you consider a good setter averages 10 assist per set -- she should have had more like 4-5.

So for whatever reason - defense or setting -- the move to a 5-1 against this opponent helped. Kudos to TH and staff for that in-match adjustment.

It was still a dog fight -- and at this point in the season that helps us prepare for tough matches ahead. GM on Sunday will be our last "gimme" match. They all get very competitive after that.

This was a VERY GOOD win. GW brought everything and we found a way to turn them back. Also -- they scored a ton of points when their Libero was serving. We handled her serve okay -- but their line up on that rotation was awesome. We'll need to study film to figure out how to stop that in the future if we see then in A-10 Tourney play.

Also -- in set 1 we SET Amber ZERO times. Not she had zero kills -- she had ZERO SWINGS. Not sure what was happening there -- but she was the POW the last two weeks and you don't get her the ball at all in set 1 -- that's a problem.

Finally -- Krafta had a monster match. Sloan got that huge dig-save at the end, but Janna was awesome the entire 4th and 5th set. She would not let the ball hit the floor and she delivered some awesome sets when we were out-of-system with a bad first pass. In my opinion she was the MVP of this match. Great senior leadership. She simply was not going to let this match go. She also served well.

BeckysTXA had it dead on. I was ready to call it quits in the 4th set when GW went up 20-19. It was just heart wrenching.

Also, as she says, hitting the open court. We seemed to be behind where they were hitting it all night. This may be why Amber didn't get any attempts in the 1st set.

Also, our over the net dinks just weren't working at all. They just seemed to know what was coming.

And #8 is only a junior. Ick. Another year of her at MB stinks for us. It's great for GW and the A10, for sure, but, she's got a strong arm.

It took me until the 3rd or 4th set to realize we switched back to the 5-1 offense. But, one of these days I will watch the ball when setters set, because I never catch the 2 touch set where it spins.

Here's my only thing though. This could have been a loss if it was at GW. And where is the A10 tourney? At GW. Luckily, 1 loss in the A10 tourney final is probably ok at this point for an at-large bid. 1 loss shouldn't push us past 40 adjusted RPI. The big 5 conferences don't have tournaments, so many of the secondary level conferences will all have 1 loss as well coming up.

I'll be there on Sunday cheering for the Seniors.

Didnt think we passed the ball well all match. Receives were getting sprayed and sets by both setters were out of location for the attacker's wheelhouse. Granted, some of the suspect sets were contingent upon the suspect receives before it.

Thought GW played very well. Wasnt one of those "we just sucked so we made them look good" outings. Their receiving was far superior. There were several times in the last 2 sets where we had a good serve and their receive was so accurate that the setter never had to take a step at the net. She was motionless other than to get her hands up and push the set wherever she wanted. The skill to receive a ball and pass it to the setter like that is impressive.

We also had trouble getting defensive points in the last part of set 4 and most of set 5 until the very very end. We kept playing through the struggles and found a way to get a couple critical points.

You just KNOW that at 12-8 in the fifth, GW thought it was wrapped up. I did too. Im sure most did. And honestly if you are up 12-8 in the fifth you should shut the door. But the scramble on Krafka's desperation dig and then Turner's kill on the left side saved match point.

Match coulda gone either way. GW is much better than earlier in the year. Not much difference b/t these teams talent wise. Their record reflects about 3 matches they didnt finish and ours does. Thats not a big margin.

If we have any chance whatsoever at an at-large, we had to have this one and we got it. But we have to keep winning and win out. The only way I feel good about an at-large is if we win every match but the A10 final and then beat Ohio U.

The A10 tourney will be very competitive this year -- maybe mos competitive in 4-5 seasons. UD, SLU, GW, and URI could all conceivably win it. Not much separation really. Lots of 5-set UD wins over those teams so its going to be a dog fight.

Was this a great/focused showing from GW since they are still in a spot where they can have a top-two seed going into the A-10 tourney in their building. They still get a shot at SLU and they know SLU has to play Dayton. They probably figured the losses were there for SLU that if they won they could get a bye. Just my theory why GW played a great match.

Yes, the A-10 tourney looks super competitive. SLU, RI, and GW all look really even. RI and GW have taken Dayton to 5 sets in the last week. And even VCU has been strong as of late winning at SLU. If VCU can win at SLU they are playing well above their RPI and Pablo and on a neutral court, they could conceivably win it too.

Back to Dayton's match. They play GM today. How much Alaina will we see with the top seed all wrapped up?

Speaking of GW still getting a shot at SLU. That is a big match as far as A-10 standings go. If the Friday match was any indication, it will be good. Not much else this weekend other than Duq vs Davidson at 1:00.

Next weekend gives us Dayton @ SLU and VCU hosting Rhode Island.

UD Sweeps George Mason 3-0.

One section of the upper deck across from the benches was home to the Krafka Family Reunion. They all had t-shirts with 'Dayton Flyers 18' on it.

Lots of good volleys throughout the set. Kept keeping things going on both sides.

Finish the home season with only one home loss, that to Baylor early in the season. Currently undefeated in A10 play with one game to go.

Only 291 days (or so) before another home volleyball game that counts.

Oh, and the other neat thing at the game on Sunday, is that the Machi twins and Jill Loiars sang the national anthem. They did a wonderful job!
