Flyers Win!!!!!

Save 3 match points at 11-14 and take 5th set 18-16.

WOW!

Saint Marys Beat #17 ISU yesterday 3-1 - so they are top quality.

What a gut-check. Straight from the heart.

Could this be the match that turns this season around?

Eagerly await the reports from Avid and Tandem. Had to have been one whale of a match.

Yes, I also want to hear accounts from people who attended.

Alaina Turner turned it on in sets 4 and 5, really really good to see.

This was a huge win.

St. Marys is a very good program -- like NCAA program. They took a set off of Nebraska. This was a huge gut checker. Been a couple difficult weeks of taking lumps and in many cases being uncompetitive.

Today I think the team was sick and tired of being sick and tired and wanted to taste success. Unlike some of the prior matches when we got down and kind of fell over, we battled the whole way in this one -- from behind.

Affolder has to feel good about this one. Been preaching toughness and avoiding mental errors. You dont beat SMC with a lousy effort.

Now we have empirical evidence that we can beat good teams and win when we get down. Time to focus on ourselves and get in the gym and work on getting better.

Big win for the ladies. I attended the Husker game and watched this one -- but it will be a day or two before I can write everything down -- 17 year old had senior pics today and I spent 4 hours ironing clothes, and coordinating hair, nails, makeup and the photographer. (yikes!)

During this match, I too was thinking about that Xavier match we won in 3 sets with 18 blocks. Blocking is clearly a strength and it's getting better. Aside from the Iowa State match -- we've done a really good job. Also, FYI St Mary's beat Iowa State last night. We saw the last set in that 3-1 win. St Mary's was in total control.

More later.

I can only report on the Nebraska game. I really felt it was the best the team had played all year. They gritted it out but with a very raucous crowd it was a bit to overcome and come with a victory. Still, all in all it looked like the flyers team of old.

Sat with Alina Turners dad and uncle, with BeckysTX behind us. There was one other couple there who live in Omaha and graduated from UD in 2009. Not sure if we could be heard on the radio but every time UD got a block we'd do the woof woof cheer we'd learned from Huskers fans.

had a tough choice to make with the remaining St. Mary's game. No room and the inn. With UCLA in town for the football game the motels were sold out and my room was taken for Saturday night. Which mean that if I stayed I would travel 8.5 hours back to St. Louis getting in around 3AM so left shortly after my room was taken from me.

Sad to say I missed the best match of the tourney. Not surprised with the turnout as the flyers looked like they were returning to flyer form. The Iowa State game was an anomaly since the flyers had to trek it by bus as their flight was canceled. Tired legs and it showed but they came back against Nebraska and St. Mary's.

Jody and I talked with Matt after the Nebraska game and he was up beat. He saw what he had been looking for in the ladies. Heart, toughness and grit.

That's one of my great vexations about Johnny-come-lately Nebraska fans. And, there are a lot of relatively new Nebraska fans at Husker volleyball matches--with the doubling of attendance in the new venue. It truly seems that many/most are chanting WOOF, WOOF, WOOF! It truly, truly does.

It's supposed to be ROOF, ROOF, ROOF with arms making a simulated ROOF at each chant. Far too many are chanting WOOF, WOOF, WOOF--which makes no sense in regard to volleyball. The idea is that the block put an impenetrable ROOF over the attack making it impossible for the ball to cross the net. Think stuff block! Think ROOF block!

In the past, there were some fans that held up a poster with ROOF, ROOF, ROOF written on it as the fans chanted and presented a simulated ROOF with their arms. I haven't seen a poster like that for quite some time. When done right, it is great for fan participation and would quite likely have an effect on the opposing hitter.

At away matches, I have never heard/seen any other team's fans do the ROOF, ROOF, ROOF chant! I think it would be great for UD to start doing the chant--Red Scare maybe... It would likely need a large poster with ROOF, ROOF, ROOF written on it to get the cheer started and kept going.

'Nother rant about fans. For years and years and years, Nebraska fans would SIT and clap along as the band played Hail Varsity. This makes sense as the fans are sitting closely together and all the up and down was troublesome. Plus, there were always a few fans remaining standing after the song was finished and were blocking the view of the fans behind them. Hail Varsity is played often.

Much less often played is the Nebraska fight song: Dear Old Nebraska U (There Is No Place Like Nebraska). Tradition dictates that you stand up, clap and sing along with that. It seems that, now, many Husker fans have no idea what to do or even know the difference between Hail Varsity and Dear Old Nebraska U.

I'm curious, are there similar lost and/or mutilated traditions at UD?

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend either the Dayton vs. St. Mary's or Huskers vs ISU matches yesterday.

From the streaming audio, it sounded like the Flyers got on track and played much better. They certainly did not give up the fight!!!

The Husker Sports Network carried play-by-play of the last half of the fifth set between the Flyers and St. Mary's. During a break in the play, Diane Mendenhall, one of the premier volleyball broadcast analysts in the country, said that the level of play from the Flyers had risen every single set.

I'm looking forward to elevated play by the Flyers in the Flyer Classic and the A-10 season!

You are correct Tandem - it's ROOF, ROOF, ROOF. Several years ago we had a discussion on here when the Red Scare VP for Volleyball was active on this forum and asking for ideas for Red Scare during the matches. Several things were posted including Roof-Roof-Roof. It never caught on, but that's not to say it can't and this would be the year to make it happen because we have a great blocking team.

And you are also correct about the signs at Nebraska. I saw them on TV. What I remember is some sponsor printed them up. Roof,Roof,Roof was on the back and the sponsor logo, ect on the front. They were red and white of course and horizontal so each ROOF was stacked on top of each other.

Not sure if this is the same thing you remember.

I do vaguely remember signs and at least one fairly large poster being used. Perhaps a roofing company in or around Dayton would like to sponsor the production and distribution of signs for the fans to use.

Maybe Chris R. or someone else with good connections could/would follow-up on this. As you know, it's really kind of dramatic when the fans do the cheer really well in unison. It simply must get into to the rejected hitter's mind at least a little bit.

The Red Scare could also adapt the "Rachel Schwartz cheer" as well. You know, where everyone chants the last name of the next person to serve after their name has been announced. PA announcer, "Serving next is Rachel Schwartz" Red Scare/crowd, "SCHWARTZ!!!"

There are several Flyer players with names useable for this cheer: Beach, Agu, Loiars, Jones, Morey, Brown. I guess not all of those get to serve, but some do.
