Someone mentioned he's from the area. Best explanation I can think of. Unless he's getting a huge raise. In terms of winning potential and potential prestige... a wash.

Must have heard about Archie's extension, so he decided not to hope for Dayton.

Think they will play us now?
Would not be too bad of a "buy game" for us to host next season

Shake is from Wisconsin, I believe the Madison area, so about an hour and a half away. When the job opened up, he was the first one I thought of, mainly due to the part of the country. He passed up UCLA amongst others, so by no means did I think it was a certain, but you knew Marquette was going to inquirer, and you had to figure there are some heart strings pulling him to Wisconsin. I didn't realize Marquette was paying Buzz, $2.8 mil or more than he's making at VTech.

Interesting Tidbit on why Buzz may have left Marquette for Virginia Tech...........from the Milwaukee Sentinel today:
But Marquette could have a run for its money if Smart decides to leave VCU. Wake Forest is also looking for a coach and has reportedly contacted Smart. Buzz Williams left Marquette partially because he did not believe in the new Big East's viability. Williams now coaches in the Atlantic Coast Conference, of which Wake Forest is a member.

What does 'viability' mean? That it won't compete or that it will cease to exist?

Sure he will, but hope Shaka turns over every rock as to why Williams left Marquette so quickly after formation of NBE, which his school was apparently an integral part of that formation. And for less money at VT, too?!?!

Who knows Shaka may be using this as an opportunity to improve his situation at VCU. I also don't know if Shaka's brand of basketball would play well everywhere. I don't know about Marquette but I definitely don't think it would work at UCLA. They shoot themselves in the foot.

I was told by someone at work that archie has an offer from marquette so archie might not have that offer after all. It would make sense for smart to take that job if he is a lifetime marquette fan. Marquette has a lot of money to play with because of the tv contract. If the a10 gets an increase I hope they pass some of that money to archie although they might have already done that

Mixed reports regarding Shaka Smart and Wisconsin and Marquette in particular. While its his home state some are saying he has bad memories from Madison and Wisconsin in general. The said it was racial, so not sure what that means. What is his nationality etc. Can't see where that would be an issue. Besides if the price is right one would be able to tolerate things more, or possibly come back to show them.
Also on BE board while some like getting Shaka not sure they like the idea of him bringing HAVOC to the BE.
Well it is that time of year.

I don't know what ethnic background Shaka has, but looking at wiki, there's a part in there that would lead one to believe issues of race are important to him:
"Smart's given name was bestowed in honor of the famous Zulu warrior. [11] He graduated magna *** laude from Kenyon with a degree in History, researching and writing on issues related to race and the Great Migration his junior and senior years. [12] Smart received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and earned a master's degree in social science at California University of Pennsylvania. He developed a love for quotations at Kenyon. Smart began writing down quotes into a digital document that is now over 110 pages long. He also likes nature documentaries featuring big cats. [13]"

every time there is a coaching job available, Internet clowns come out and use the phrase "Coach XYZ to School 123 is a done deal." And 90% of the time its pure garbage. Then the 10% of the time they get it right, they point at themselves like insiders with KGB-like sources.
Every blind squirrel eventually finds a nut, just like every broken clock is right twice a day. Once in a while they get it right, most of the time they dont, and all of the time its better to ignore the noise completely.

Shaka to Marquette? HMMMM....
Honestly, IMHO...that would be one of the best things that could happen for UD and there big (L)east hopes! IMHO
Possibly removes VCU (Non-Catholic) from NBE consideration ala the Brad Stephens/Butler fiasco, and also maybe moves Marquette closer to our side of the ledger because Shaka loves UD!
That is a win/win for UD's NBE hopes in addition to the Fred Postelo hiring at St. Louis during the past week as the 1st new lay President!
Go Flyers!!

I'll believe Shaka is leaving when and only when it's a done deall. He turned down jobs in the past including UCLA.
Marquette has a new President and an interim AD.
Both Shaka and AM for that matter are smarter than to get into uncertain situation. I thought Sean Miller was calculated in his decision to leave for 'Zona when he did. I
n the end, I hope it's not the case but Shaka and Archie will do the same. Their motto should be Right program at the Right Time. Go Flyers!

Not sure why you would turn down an offer to UCLA and Illinois and take an offer from a Marquette or Wake Forest. Doesn't make sense to me, even if you are from the area. The only explanation I can think of is he is starting to worry about his star dimming.

Couple of thoughts.
I read somewhere that Shaka's wife is a professor at VCU. If so, it would seem to say he isn't likely to leave.
Secondly, there are reports that Shaka is at least entertaining offers from Marquette. If there is any truth at all behind the rumors it puts a huge crimp in the strong, mostly fan-led campaign to put VCU into the NBE on the understanding that the coach is in Richmond to stay. The NBE definitely doesn't want another Butler on it's hands. But in reality I think the NBE is never going to add a large, Southern, state school which is exactly what VCU is. The NBE was formed to get away from large state schools.
Just my 2 cents.

Unfortunately, this is what we get from today's media. Long gone are the days of actually doing some research to find out what the facts are/are not. Rather, members of the media often break a story that could happen in an effort to be the first to report it. Guess I can't blame the media since there are no repercussions with breaking this type of story and being completely wrong (although I don't think the pursuit of Shaka at Marquette is over quite yet).
BTW, heard on the radio this morning that Eggsavior AD nor Coach Mack has been contacted about the opening at W.F. Yesterday there was a report or two that had him as a candidate, so this is another example!!

The Internet has created a culture where being first is more important than being right. Its one part I loathe about the Web. Folks need to "get their scoop on" and be a hero to the world 2 seconds before the rest of the free world learns of it from an official statement or press release. You sling enough mud on a wall, some will eventually stick. Twitter and other social media have just made it worse.
