That 2nd option may be the foundation of some good jokes, depending on everyone's definition of a 'pet'.

My wife has a co-worker whose dog is named Flyer. Just me, but that just doesn't roll off the tongue well as a pet name.

Um, so you seem a bit confused? You're definitely doing it all wrong, so I hope you will allow me to help you...
You name your dog Rudy, and then you name the small helpless bird something like Xavier Sux. That would be a good name for a fat blue blob of a bird, or a parrot who spoke French maybe. Either of which would surely taste delicious to Rudy.
There's quite a few more good options too, depending on the bird. Does it have a large beak? Thad's a nice name in that case. Is it constantly flapping it's stupid wings? Joe or Hawk in that case is a good name for the oh-so-annoying, soon-to-be-devoured over-flapper.
If it's a jailbird prone to breaking and entering, theft and general stupidity, Devon or Jalen are solid name choices. Juwan is great for the bird with the meddling, always interfering father. And finally, if you had a stupid fake bird that wasn't an actual real, live species of bird, then you could name him Billiken. Should you go this route, it would be a nice touch to apply some gold spray paint to that old dog bowl so that you can serve Billiken in the much-coveted, not-really-all-that-hard-to win Arch Baron Cup.
I hope that helps!

My dog is named Rudy, middle name Brooks, after Brooks Hall who was in my class. Lived on my floor at the Crest our freshman year, played Goldeneye and Mario Kart with us quite a bit.

We had an awesome black lab named Flyer, passed last spring at the very old age of 15. The name worked very well.
