Unfortunately DD might be helping your perception of Josh. Not that he didn't get stronger. For those that feed on recruits videos, DD had a pretty sweet recruiting video compared to other folks we're geeked on "today", 3.7 stars per VC and an Izzo offer....meaning videos and ratings may not predict worthiness. Hopefully DD improved or can at least be lethal from 3...

Bring back the second exhibition game. I never bought into the erroneous idea that a private practice with middling DI teams, or any DI program, is somehow a better form of preparation than the heat of the arena lights complete with a real clock, real cheers and groans, with some semblance of a real game, against D11 or D111.

UD should exhibition Findlay, Capital, and Wittenberg, over and over again. Play two of them per year, and forget the so called D1 secret garbage scrimmage.

Well, being that most teams do it this way now, I think most coaches and school admins would disagree with you. I would rather see what my team can do in a controlled environment against a DI team than a game against a DII or DIII team that has maybe 1 kid on it good enough to even make the roster.

Do you really want to pay for another games ticket for a game that doesn't count? I can't remember the last exhibition game I went to and playing Findlay, Capital, or Wittenberg wouldn't get me to go either.

I think a lot has to do with your class mix. If you have a veteran lineup, let's tee it up in front of our fans and get after it. In the case of this season, we have a real mix of tenure and backgrounds, and we are very short on Senior leadership. More than anything else, the coaches are going to be teaching early on. The opportunity to do that in a private environment where you can take an extra timeout, walk out on the floor, mix and match players out of the bright lights is an asset.

Maybe if UD would just do the proper marketing, we could see 13K in the stands for BOTH pre season games...just like you proposed for midnight madness. Ummm...no

I didn't buy into the erroneous idea either. I bought into the factual situation.

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that BTC is the guy who said he could pack the house to the rafters for Midnight Madness. (Now there's an erroneous idea to buy into.) Imagine what he could do if a second team arrived for the meaningless practice. They would have to raise ticket prices to ration the number of people who show up. Maybe we could move it to the Carrier Dome to accommodate the demand.

For the record, I would rather play 1 real "scrimmage" against a DII team and 1 secret scrimmage against another DI team with higher level athletes. This is on par or above with the sort of team we'll be facing for most of our preconference schedule. And also for the record I don't give a flying cow patty either way.

It would be even better if they didn't keep score in the secret scrimmage but instead did shortened quarters, scripted situations, etc.

The closed scrimmages are there for a reason. How many fans are going to pay for a seat at the arena to work on repeated press breaks, out of bounds plays against different defenses, half court sets and play stoppages?

I am betting none. That is of course you want to pay to watch what is essentially a closed practice against an foreign opponent.

I would actually pay more to watch that or a regular practice than a game against Ohio Dominican, Ball St., Tennessee Tech, Georgia St, and Wagner. Now I realize I would be in the minority on this, but I find scouting and game situation preparation just as interesting as a real game if not more. A real game gives you a break every 4 minutes anyway so it's not like there is continuous action plus I wouldn't have to put up with the pizza and chicken giveaways!

I'm predicting (as if I'm a modern day Jimmy the Greek) for an outstanding season from DD. He was shadowed and somewhat intimidated by the Senior class (i.e. the best senior class in UD history). After-all...there is only one ball.

It was clear to me that DD's defense was excellent. His stroke will come back. He will not be playing scared...he will be the go to guy...Seniors strut with confidence.

Go DD !!!!

I don't disagree with you as someone who appreciates the inner workings of the game of basketball...but I also don't want everything from that event subject to public review and scouting by the opponent.

The things worked on in these scrimmages aren't out there and revealed to other schools that we play. Now...after a few games in, film is film. But to hear a coach explain to a player what he wants them to do carries much more weight to an opponent than simply watching plays.

So, I was noticing that schools are adding an extra exhibition game with all proceeds going to hurricane relief funds. The NCAA has approved this because of the relief funds. Most of the ones I'm seeing are schools that are near each other.

So, I'm thinking we can satisfy BTC and PiquaFlyer in one fell swoop, and set up an exhibition game with Fairborn University.

It looked like we were seeing light at the end of the off season tunnel and you drop that?

NKU seems to be a step down from the Big 10 teams of previous yrs, but maybe we'll win this time. I don't mind playing Div. II schools in the public exhibition game. I'm just glad to be there for the team. Last year the arena sold out for the exhibition game. (How many other teams can claim that?) and I couldn't go, due to an obligatory family birthday party. (I did not want to be "disowned" by my sister) My son was at the game and texting me updates. Amazing how many other family/friends were at the party, desperately trying to find out what was happening, lol. I provided a necessary service. True fans just want to see their team play.

Or UD could do something similar to what UNC is doing, which is a four team scrimmage with three lesser teams from the state.

So, Dayton plays the scrimmage tomorrow? Where? When?

If they play tomorrow, i would expect that players will attend class today; then get on a bus to go somewhere?

Given the state of the Arena, might be on campus. But that might be a part of the secret.

The season ticket cost was never lowered, but rather remained the same even when the second exhibition was taking away. Therefore, I am already paying for it.

Additionally, the cost has since gone-up from the original threshold amount.

Wink Midnight Madness???

Sorry, but I never mentioned anything about so called midnight madness. You really need to know your terminology. Midnight Madness hasn't been an idea for 20 - 30 years.

I think you obviously must have meant that I posted my thoughts as it relates to having a RED V. Blue Game; and to that end, silly me, being the idiot that I am, felt strongly that there is zero sense in having a day where the U. opens up the arena, has both the men and women's teams play a game, and hope like heck that no-one shows-up. Why would any successful organization want to host an event, and have 10,000 empty seats? Can you give me a legitimate reason for something as low-end as that??????????????

Here is a hint: NO YOU CANNOT!

Folks, I never said that nothing good could ever come out of a scrimmage versus one our middling DI opponents; but rather, I think the second exhibition carries more weight than one two or three hour scrimmage against the middling programs UD typically scrimmages...Northern Kentucky just turn DI case in point.

Second, if you think that most university admins disagreeing with me, says something about me, well, you are correct, as certainly does. And, I wear that like a badge of honor. After all, the UD administration, is the same administration that lead 75% of you to earnestly believe that UD was such an obvious choice and fit for the inaugural Holy Big East. Oh, oops, well, don't worry UD is shoe-in for the year two the Holy Big East. Oh, I am so sorry, oops, UD will obviously be in the Big East this time next year, blah, blah, blah; as evidenced by both the major DI secret scrimmages UD has been having against Duke, and UCLA, and Kentucky; or, in this case Northern Kentucky. That's why when the great plurality on this board get's their season tickets, the tickets read: Butler, Xavier, Creighton, Georgetown, et.al. However, the small minority morons on here like myself, well, our measly tickets say Fordham, Duquesne, and LaSalle.

And correct me if I am wrong on this, but last years Findlay game was in fact a sellout (a real sellout, not the fake ones we normally have, but rather the seats were actually filled-up); and it took everything the all-time wins class at UD had, to barely scrap out a win in the final minute of the game.

While we are at it, I suspect there is at-least a 50% chance that the Red/blue game is "tabled" forever. The UD Arena Project is likely to simply be the opportunity for them to get rid of that as well. And, don't go looking for UD to host "actual" first and second" round games in the NCAA tourney post this renovation.

This program has no in-state rivals, and no-regional rivals, and no chance of being in the Big East; so why not just cut the garbage about a so called "big time" scrimmage and just play Findlay (a DII power) annually in the second exhibition.

Otherwise, see you at the UD Arena, and see you in Charleston, for those of us who actually do follow the Flyers.

Only one question about your rants. Believe we have had scrimmages against Purdue and Marquette in the recent past. Hardly middling teams.

I don’t know about future Red Blue games. I do know that the arena was not in any form to hold the game this year. due to construction. The cancellation 100% due to renovation work.

Don’t be surprised to see some unfinished arena work next Saturday.

Exactly! I do not believe the team has even had a chance to practice in the Arena yet. Last I heard, earlier this week, it was still being inspected.

I am betting none. That is of course you want to pay to watch what is essentially a closed practice against an foreign opponent.
I would pay... and if I were UD, I would have a meet and greet afterwards, make it an event...I would be in for that definitely

Flyers held their first practice for the season at UD Arena yesterday. I don't believe they could have practiced there until yesterday.

The tickets for your second exhibition game said Walsh or Ryerson the four seasons prior to UD getting rid of it in favor of a secret scrimmage. The players seemed about as disinterested in those games as the fans did. I hope they never go back to it.

The only thing I've been able to find:

http://www.norsefans.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=249

A "get that junk out of here" tweet, posted on a Norse message board that NKU's team bus was indeed at the arena on Saturday. I'm shocked how little information has come out so far, at least publicly.

We have played mostly B10 teams in the past who have dedicated beat writers for college basketball. IIRC, the leaks in the past have come from the other schools not from any of UD's writers. I think that is the difference now.

Plus our beat writer was probably too busy covering Wittenberg Football on Saturday.

While he was covering tOSU football at the same time too!

I think Jablonski does a great job but I wouldn't want to see the mileage he puts on his car since he actually lives in Columbus. It gives the DDN a convenient way to cover tOSU football, but then he spends the rest of the year driving to Dayton and then after that to Cincinnati to cover the Reds sometimes.

First, you act as if I'm keeping a journal of your posts. It was highly unlikely that I would even remember you said something worth remembering at all, let alone the specifics.

Second, my oh my, 20-30 years goes faster these days than it used to.

https://www.si.com/college-basketbal...-date-schedule

"Most commonly known as “Midnight Madness,” the event has taken on many different names and forms as individual schools put their own spin on the occasion: in Lexington, it’s “Big Blue Madness”; in Lawrence, it’s “Late Night in the Phog.”"

You really need to learn your terminology.

Third, they don't HOPE no one shows up, they KNOW FOR A FACT that 13,000 people have more important things to do on a Saturday afternoon than to go watch an intrasquad scrimmage. Heck I missed it half the time when I lived in Dayton 20 minutes from the arena. You think that if Beyonce was there I would show up? Let me give you a hint: no I would not.

And I don't see Beyonce walking through those doors even with your mighty marketing power () behind it.

These are conflicting updates... anyone know for certain the current status of the arena?

I found a picture on Dayton Basketball Twitter account that had most of the lower arena seats in place, and they were starting to put the floor down (this was from Oct. 23). You can leave your folding chairs at home.

State of Arena

As of Tuesday, Oct 24, all the seats were in, the new big board above center court was up, and everything had been dusted. Not all will be finished but the main need I saw was for all the construction debris and materials to be cleared out of the concession areas. Plenty of time to put final touches on.

Exactly Jeff! That's why I said, "Anyway, Back to the scrimmage".

Nothing gets past you C-Time. And, why do you care how many days later a person post? Don't you have an adult life? Do you hang on here all day everyday, hoping the Dayton to the Big East News will come-down. I wouldn't even bother, but it upsets you so much that someone disagrees with you, and/or sees the program in some different light than you. Amazing!

Because this is a message board meant for discussion. You made a post that 4 people replied to and then you decided to wait 9 days to reply about any of them. Seems like a long time unless you're just trolling people to get a reaction.

But don't worry because I won't be replying to any more of your posts because I'm going make you the 2nd member of this board that I'm adding to my ignore list so don't bother replying to this because I won't be able to see it. I'd recommend that you add me to your ignore list too.

The lack of info about this scrimmage is ridiculous. I get that there was a big OSU game, but are any media asking about it? Pretty unacceptable lack of reporting on it. Guess we just have to wait until this Saturday....

I’d just even like to know who the starting 5 was...!

I'm surprised by the lack of leaks, but who the starting 5 was, or how they played will all be irrelevant by Saturday and even more so when the real games start.

There was a scrimmage Saturday. They did keep score. I don't know the score. But I did ask.

Anthony Grant said all the Flyers are healthy. They all played in scrimmage and all will play Saturday in exhibition.
