Hit And Run

WEST BLOOMFIELD (MI) -- To stick with the baseball analogy employed in the previous “FTS”, if the Dayton Flyers’ Duquesne debacle was a “swing and miss” then their SBU victory was most assuredly a “hit and run.” The Red and Blue hit the Bonnies upside the head for the better part of 40 minutes and ran away with a much-needed, end-to-end win to even their season and conference records at 7-7 and 1-1, respectively.

David Jablonski of The Dayton Daily News supplies the video highlights:

Tom Archdeacon, also of The DDN provides some insight into the difference maker in this one: Trey Landers

Speaking of “hit and run” Darrell Davis is clearly not the same shooter we have seen in seasons past. He is hitting his treys “with authority” as Bucky likes to say and running back the other way. DD is also going to the hoop with more regularity, but one correction Darrell needs to make is limiting the use of his left hand. If you notice, almost all his TOs occur when he is going to the basket and utilizing a left-handed dribble.

One of the pleasant surprises from the SBU game was the FT shooting of Kostas Antetokounmpo. The big fella went 6 of 10 from the line and is now shooting an even 50% from the charity stripe. I noticed that when he relaxed and shot with his fingertips, Kostas swished those bad boys; when he didn’t, he missed.

Conversely, a major disappointment for SBU had to be their FT shooting. The Bonnies as a team are hitting 75% from the FT line but only made 64% against Dayton. PG Jaylen Adams, normally a reliable 84% from the line, was only able to connect on 8 of 12 vs. UD. If you watched Adams, he shoots his FTs with his palms and not his fingertips. His 7 turnovers didn’t help the Bona cause, either.

Meanwhile, UD made 79% of their freebies, led by Baby D’s perfect 10-10.

One other thing that caught the eye was AG’s substitutions and distribution of playing time. In the game thread on the UD Pride MB, poster C-time thoughtfully kept track of the subs during the action. You could get a sense of an actual substation pattern, something that was not readily discernible in the previous 13 Flyer contests.

In terms of minutes, X only played 16 minutes, didn’t score, had 3 boards and 1 block, obviously not his best offensive effort. John Crosby only saw 4 minutes of floor time, was ineffective and sat. Matej Svoboda never left the pine as did Joey Gruden, who got some meaningful minutes vs. the Dukes. This is something to keep an eye on going forward.

There was an awful lot to like in what the Flyer Faithful saw last night vs. SBU. Which team will show up Saturday vs. UMass -- the one that “swung and missed” in Da Burgh or the squad that “hit and ran” all over the Bonnies?

We shall see.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
