What is the best starting 5 for the A10 tourney and beyond? I am assuming Josh needs more minutes to get into full game shape.
X started tonight.
RM started pretty much every other game.
KD has started a bunch this year.
SS, KP, and CC are givens. Who are the the other two starters?

Seems clear he's taking Sam's minutes. Our defense will thus only get better. This is setting up to be a great March.

To have a trio of KD, Ryan or X, and Josh coming off the bench is crazy good... holy depth

9 man rotation (I only want 8 but we all know we have to have a backup pt gd.)
1= Scoochie, Crosby (Darrell when Scoochie can't play 40 minutes and Crosby is turning it over.)
2= Darrell, Kyle
3= Cooke, (Three man rotation at the 2/3 spot with KD, DD, CC)
4= Xman, Mikesell
5= Pollard, Cunningham.

The only thing I can see changing that is situational substitutions at the 4 & 5. What I mean by that is, you may see Pollard play alongside Cunningham, if we need more muscle down low. I can't see Williams and Mikesell on the court side-by-side unless we need a lot of outside shooting, and at that point, it's a last resort.

Pollard and Cunningham playing together at the 4 and 5 respectively is absolutely a possibility.

Yup...gotta have Josh or KP in the game at this point. Mikesell has been a little off lately and I think it has to do with the depth and some changes to assignments/playing time. Williams is coming into his own. If he stays out of foul trouble, his upside is above Mikesell at this current point in time. They are both about equal in the long term eye test...some good some bad play...but you have to go with the guy that is playing the best at any given time. Not just because of William's URI effort, but he has improved drastically in every facet of the game. Ryan just seems like he has been on his heels lately and is just a bit off. Both are and will continue to be important pieces at this team rounds out the season.
Sam's minutes will decrease drastically. His effort wasn't there on the defensive end last night. Josh will take his minutes. Sam gets minutes if KP or Josh is in foul trouble, and the lineups don't call for X or Ryan if they run small. It will be hit or miss for Sam from here on out.

Kyle Davis needs to be on the floor whenever possible.. he is a lockdown defender and his offensive confidence is soaring. We would have lost 2-4 games just this year without him. He's strong, fast & passionate! He starts in March.

I liked seeing Mikesell taking the ball up the court some against the press late in the game, he looks very comfortable with the ball in his hands (dribbling and passing). I've only really seen him do it when we've had a comfortable lead though, I think he could take some pressure off of Crosby when they're both on the floor.

I agree, but I really like the energy that he has been bringing off the bench. So many people get caught up in who starts the game, but it's who finishes that matters. KD, and X have been in when it matters with Cooke, Pollard, and Smith. Hopefully Cunningham can work his way into that mix. He looked well on his way to doing so last night.

I was working on my wording and you put it correctly. It'll be interesting how Archie fits Cunningham into this scheme.

Having Cunningham back will be huge. He's stronger already than I had expected, very good passer and has a nice touch around the basket. Plugging him in to rest Pollard or even go with two bigs will be interesting.
Although it was St Louis, for once it appears as though Crosby might be finally coming around. Couple of drives in that were ill advised that he got bailed out on, but he also had some possessions where he worked the ball. Importantly it wasn't a scoring drought.
Time to close out strong.

As much as I'd like to see it, I am not sure there is time to get KP and Josh playing together. Much easier to have Josh sub for KP.

Josh coming back this year or red-shirting was discussed in another thread
but this seems to be as good a place as any to bring up this thought about Josh.
It seems that his intention was to be back in the game as soon as possible from almost the start of his injury after the 2nd game. Now this could be because of 1 of 2 main reasons, 1) he was concerned about putting his fortunes into the NCAA decision committee for granting another year of eligibility and not receiving it (therefore missing the NCAAT) or 2) playing this year even with the limited number of games would most likely result in him having the opportunity to play in at least 1 NCAAT game whereas, those prospects are somewhat dimmer going forward as next year looks to be a rebuilding year (with the makeup of next years projected team).
What do you think?

Good situation to be in....both KD & Josh coming off the bench, when a legit case can be made they could start. Imagine this depth all year.

Honestly, I think it was a pretty decision. If Dayton wasn't a tournament team, maybe then it would be worth the gamble of waiting on NCAA to potentially grant an additional year. Having just sat his transfer year, I can only imagine the kid just wants to play ASAP. Clearly that motivated him in his rehab. He's hungry. So let him eat now.

No one really knows for certain as several things enter the picture but if I was betting I'd say that 1.) he sees something special with this team and knew all along he could play up 13-14 games with them based on how well they do in both the A10 and NCAA. 2.) No way he wants to stay in school for what could be 6 years. No knock on the young man but he may have both his undergrad and grad school (should he want that) all finished in 5 years or even less. 3.) I'm sure he would love to play professional BB somewhere and he probably wants to get started on that far sooner than later and not lose a year of earning power.

Just my opinion, but if Josh had decided to test the red shirt process, I don't think he would have planned to finish his career at UD.
Hypothetical:
Josh sits out this year and gets the medical red shirt.
He has now been in school 3 years plus 2 summers in Dayton plus any early enrollment at Bradley. More than likely, he graduates next year, maybe in December. In this scenario he graduates having used only 2 years of eligibility.
Let's say he has a breakout year next season and grabs lots of attention including the attention of coaches at Power 5 schools who are looking for a big man to fill a hole.
Suddenly, he's the rare grad transfer that has 2 years of eligibility.
Top 100 coming out of high school.
He's been well coached.
He hasn't gotten into any trouble on or off the court.
His high school buddies from Chicago are long gone.
Why not consider jumping to a big name program?
Just a hypothetical.

If you had a chance to contribute with these seniors and what you believe they are capable of, wouldn't you want to play, too? he has played in 4 games and they will still have 7 to 14 more. that is a third to half a season. No brainer decision with this team's potential, really.

I have heard Archie say more than once that there was never a question of his coming back to play this year if he was physically able. It is what Josh wanted. Josh also stated he wanted to play with Kendall.

Darrell starts, Kyle comes off bench. Darrell's confidence and stroke is back, that coincided with his starting gig. Kyle brings fire and attitude off the bench. Kyle doesn't care about anything but winning. i dont care about the X,Mikesell discussion its either, or for me. But the Davis' situation....if it aint broke dont fix it.

I think he may already be a better option to start than Mikesell. He's way better defensively, boards better, scores better inside. Mikesell's only advantage may be shooting outside where at least from 3, he's been less than average.

I concur with Browns. He seemed quite comfortable with the ball. We may have identified a spot for him in the future.

AM can mix and match based on opponent. Our bench looks so deep with the improvement of XW and Josh back from his injury. Could be a very interesting March!
