nah, it was just a few weeks ago where I was of the opinion that I'd rather not see SLU again. Now, I say bring it on, what doesn't kill you can only make you better. Although I'd happily wait until Sunday of that week to match up

There is a scenario where we lose to any team we play in the A10 tourney, if you think hard enough. We have to play our game.
If we play our game, we will not lose to any of them.

No thanks. The boys are tired. They need the easiest possible path to the second round. The 7/8/9/10 seed Big Ten or Big East team they face in the second round will give them all the SLUball they want.

I guess SLU's not tired? Or they're just better conditioned? They're certainly not any deeper on the bench. And to emphasize CoffeeCan's point, not sure there IS an easy path thru the A10 tourney. VCU or UMass would be just as challenging on Friday. UMass played us just as well the last time out and VCU's seniors will be playing for their last hurrah. Further, it appears WAY more likely we'd see SLU in the semis vs the quarters. SLU would be in their 3rd game in three days. BRING IT!!!

flyerfanatic86 and I were saying we don't want to see St Louis in the first game. It appears some of you are saying the same thing.

Games are often about matchups. Saint Louis matches up well because of their size and physical play. SLU does not match up well against other teams however.
Matchups do matter.

3 games in 3 days, I don't want a grinding, physical matchup on day 1. And I don't think that win is going to suddenly catapult us into the 1 seed, it isn't going to be a quad 1 win. I'd much rather end VCU's season or something, that would at least be fun. Anything would be better than watching a rock fight when there are 2 other games immediately after.

There are 20 or more brackets on bracket matrix that have the Flyers as a 1.

Hey LIBob, can we get one last prediction? I know we are number one but I am interested in the lower level seeding. And your work is being copied to other A10 forums. You are impacting many others discussions.

Lot's of possibilities but looking like it could be Flyers play winner of VCU/ UMass on Friday. SLU on Saturday. Richmond on Sunday.

SLU and St. Bonaventure, currently in a 3 way tie at 10-6 with Duquesne, will play each other in their final match on March 7th.
Duquesne is 6th but they have a tough last two games. Duquesne goes to play at VCU, then they host Richmond. Richmond is currently hovering around the last 4 out category, so Richmond will be playing for their at large big.
SLU and St. Bonaventure both get matches against the bottom 4 on Wednesday. SLU travels to George Mason, which is obviously not a sure thing. St. Bonaventure will host St. Joes. Two wins for St.Bonaventure should give them a 12-6 record and sole place of 4th. No win is for sure, but Bonaventure should be favored by a lot at home against St. Joes, so Bonaventure should at least get to 11 wins. I think that's why the model above is giving Bonaventure a 35% chance of 4th place.

A path against #9 Umass (NET - #142 ) and #5 Bonaventure (NET - #116) would be the easiest path to the championship game based on NET rankings but would give Dayton two more Q3 games.
A path against #8 VCU (NET - #56) and #4 SLU (NET -#57) would be much more difficult.

And borderline Q1 games, #50 needed for neutral Q1.

I'm predicting Davidson vs GW in the 8-9 game and Bonaventure likely playing Duquesne in a 4-5 match-up on Friday afternoon.
Will be interesting to see if that pesky early home loss to Richmond costs Rhode Island the #2 spot.

That's a tough call. GW to 9th probably requires two wins and one of them on Senior Night at the Arena.

It's actually more linked to UMass losing. GW wins the tie breaker.
UMass has only won 1 road game in conference - Fordham. They go to LaSalle, who isn't playing too bad right now. They also play URI.
GW will lose to UD, but they have Fordham at home.
Davidson has VCU at home and Richmond on the road. Very possible to drop both and have VCU move ahead of them with an additional win over Duquesne at home. If Davidson beats VCU, they have the tie breaker by only losing to UD once.

So do we want VCU or Davidson in the 8 spot? 9 is most likely Umass.
I can't decide, they are completely opposite. VCU better chance for a close game, but feel like we win no matter what. Davidson most likely a blowout but who knows they shot well against us just didn't seem like it because we didn't miss.

Who would have thought.... our path through the A10 it shaping up like VCU -> SLU -> URI/RICH
Although Duq has beaten SLU twice already.

Interesting that VCU's highest probability is 7 at 38% but combined 8/9 is 62%. Also, UMass with a 60% probability to end up in 8/9 game. I would not automatically move VCU to the next game.
Duquesne 76% probability to end up in 4 or 5 slot. SLU 70% to end up 4 or 5. So it does look like a Duquesne - SLU showdown and as you stated, Duquesne has beaten SLU twice this season.

I realize it's not likely to go all chalk, but it's crazy to me that its probably the most likely scenario at this point.
A month ago VCU was a 9 seed in the NCAA.

Oh for sure. VCU favored going into last night's game with Duquesne. Prior to that, Duquesne had a 28% probability of top 4, 46% of 6/7. Now 55% at top 4 and now only 20% 6 or worse.
I could (and probably will) do this all day.

LIBob: I don't see any situation where Rhode Island can get 5th spot.
Richmond is 13-4, they can only get to 13-5, so wouldn't be in discussion. Bonaventure and Louis are both at 11-6, but play each other, so only 1 can be there. And Duquesne has 6 losses.
Rhode Island is 1-0 against Duquesne and Bonaventure, and 0-1 versus Saint Louis. But, Saint Louis is 0-2 against Duquesne.
I can't find the 3-way tie that would put URI last based on head-to-head results.

Rhody drops their last 2 to get to 6 losses. Ends up in a tie w/ SLU & Duquesne @ 6 losses. So the first tie breaker is head to head in the group. Duquesne, by virture of their 2 wins over SLU would be 2-1. SLU would be 1-2, Rhody would be 1-1 (beat Duquesne, lost to SLU). So Duquesne gets the 3 seed. Then the tie breaker is re-done, SLU vs Rhody, which SLU won, so SLU gets the 4, Rhody ends up with the 5 seed.
Brought to you by medstats, inc.
IF UD wins @ Rhody, is it that crazy to think Rhody could be half asleep and lose @ UMass next weekend? Is it that crazy to think that SLU wins @ Mason and home vs Bona? Is it that Crazy to think that Duquesne dumps Richmond @ home next weekend fresh off a huge win with a sparkle in their eye?
For A-10's sake and to keep Juan Bid at the door, but outside the party, we want Richmond to win this weekend, then win 1 or 2 in Brooklyn. Course we ain't so worried about the A-10 this evening, crush the Rams!

Incorrect.
Since no teams are tied at head-to-head, they don't move on. So Duquesne is first in the group at 2-1, Rhode is second at 1-1 and SLU is third at 1-2.
From the 2018 A10 bracket article
... tiebreakers were necessary in the seeding for the Championship. George Mason, Saint Louis, Richmond and VCU are all tied at 9-9. The multi-team tiebreaker separated out the fifth-seeded Patriots and eight-seeded VCU. The Billikens and Spiders reverted to the head-to-head tiebreaker, with SLU beating Richmond twice during the regular season.
|
The tiebreakers aren't meant to only choose 1 team. They choose all teams if possible. Since all 3 teams this year have different head-to-head records, therefore, it determines all seeds in the tiebreaker.

Stolen from the A-10 board, which I assume (possibly my fatal flaw) was stolen from the A-10 rules book:
Three or More-Team Tie
1. Head-to-head competition.
a. Use each team’s record against the tied teams as a group rather than performance
against individual teams. When comparing records against a group of teams, the higher
winning percentage will prevail. In case of tied percentages vs. the team or group of
1.000 or .000, the following shall apply: 2-0 is better than 1-0; 0-1 is better than 0-2.
2. If the above results in two teams remaining, the two-team tiebreaker is used.
So the 1a seperates out Duquesne, then we revert to step 2 which is a head to head, that assumes that information is true. Thankfully the Flyers are locked into a 1 and don't have to worry about it

I admit that it isn't intuitive, but nowhere in there does it say that only the first team is seeded based on 1a, and it doesn't explicitly state in 2 that the two teams remaining are tied teams. But, as the A10 article explicitly states, 5th and 8th were decided from 1a, and 6th and 7th continued to step 2 because they were both at .500.

Medstats, Inc. stays open, I'm starting a gofundme page, no promises that money isn't spent on beer however
One difference from the 2018 version is that there were 4 teams in that mix, so did step 1 place teams a & d, then B & C were left back to a 2 team tie breaker? Is it a case where a got separated out, then team d was still in last place in the new 3 team tie breaker, so they got dumped, then it reverted back to team b & c for the middle spots? All the article stats, is that in 2018, Rule 1a separated out Mason & VCU, could have been two separate 1a tie breakers done. Ie, first tiebreaker was Mason, VCU and teams B & C, Mason wins out so they move on. Then another multi-team tiebreaker grouping is formed, and B & C win out over VCU so VCU is dumped "down" the bracket and they are back to a 2 team tie breaker between B & C.
My head's spinning now
I honestly don't know, the way I've always understood it, across multiple conferences is that the multi-team tie breaker is done, then once a team is the clear winner (or losser), the remaining group is then re-calculated, typically you don't see many 4 team tie breakers.

The article specifically states, "The multi-team tiebreaker separated out the fifth-seeded Patriots and eight-seeded VCU. The Billikens and Spiders reverted to the head-to-head tiebreaker". The multi-team tiebreaker separated out fifth and eigth. Then SLU and Richmond were send to head-to-head. How could SLU/Richmond be head-to-head, if it went to a 3 team tie-break? A 3 team tie-break would have resulted in the same seeding, but it would have been SLU 2-1 against Ric/VCU, and Richmond beat VCU head-to-head twice.

Multiple conferences do things multiple ways. Sure, they may mostly work the same, but I've seen inconsistencies in the past regarding this. And, again, it's where this 3-team tiebreak favors the 3rd team over a 2nd team in a weird situation.

UMass vs VCU on Thursday. Winner plays the Flyers.
EDIT: This may not be accurate as I did not consider a 3-way tie at 9-9. I believe a UMass win vs URI and a VCU win at Davidson could change this to UMass vs Davidson.

I think UMass gets the 7 in a 3 team tie with VCU and Davidson. They are 1-1 against the other 2. The other 2 would be 1-2. Then 2 team tie breaker would put VCU at 8 and Davidson at 9.

I think it's root for Richmond, SLU and UMass to put SLU in the 3 seed.

I haven't seen it posted here, but it will indeed be 1 Dayton vs. 8 UMass or 9 VCU Friday at noon.
Other teams to have locked up their seeds as of Friday:
2 Richmond
7 Davidson
12 George Mason
Rhode Island will be 3 or 4
If SB beats SL tomorrow, both 3 RI and 6 SL go to other side of bracket, with 4 SB 5 DUQ
If SL beats SB, SL will be 3 with RI loss and 4 with RI win (SB 5 DUQ 6 in both scenarios since SB beat Richmond)
10 GW 11 LaSalle unless GW loses (which they will) and LaSalle wins against Joes (which they probably will), which would make it 10 LaSalle 11 GW forced to play Wednesday
And if anyone cares, it will be 13 Joes 14 Fordham unless Fordham wins (Mason) and Joes loses (LaSalle), which is possible in which case 13 Fordham 14 Joes
I think the above is accurate, we'll know soon enough how it shakes out.
Go Bonnies!!!

I have no concern where URI ends up. I like SLU on the other side of the bracket. I think the key is the UMass - URI game. If UMass wins, SLU ends up as the 3 with a win v SBU and the 6 with a loss. So with a UMass win, SLU ends up on the other side of the bracket regardless of the outcome of their game.
Go Minutemen!!

I was just trying to make sense of it too. It looks like UD94 nailed it. The Dayton/GW, LaSalle/ SJU, and Fordham/GMU have no implications for the top half seeding. The only games that matter for that are URI@ UMass [7pm) and SBU@ SLU (8pm).
If URI wins
