Josh Go BOOM, Then Fall Down

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Misspent a good deal of my youth watching the battle of wits between legendary cartoon characters Sylvester and Tweety Bird. In a classic short feature entitled “Birdy and the Beast” (made before even I was born), Tweety Bird made the memorable observation:

“The poor puddy tat! He fall down and go... BOOM!”

During Tuesday afternoon’s matinee victory over Alabama, Josh Cunningham did the exact opposite:

He went “BOOM!” …and then fell down.

In case you happened to be on another planet at the time, here is what that horrifying moment looked like:

The ending spoiled what should have been a satisfying and gratifying W on the road and a pretty good posterization by Josh:

Thankfully, we now know that Cunningham’s injury was not of the season-ending variety, as it appears he suffered a high ankle sprain, but no serious damage to his knee as was originally feared. His ETA for a return is the dreaded TBD.

And speaking of TBD, that continues to be the answer Archie gives when quizzed about Kendall Pollard’s return to active duty. The revised estimate is probably sometime after the DIRECTV Wooden Legacy Classic in Anaheim that kicks off on Turkey Day. That must be some thigh bruise!

So what does all of this mean?

For starters, UD will be down two of its most stout-hearted men when they square off vs. #17 St. Mary’s on Saturday afternoon. It’s “next man up” time for guys like Sam Miller, Ryan Mikesell and, according to Archie, even freshman Trey Landers. We have all heard how athletic young Mr. Landers is; now it’s time for him to show us.

Bottom line: If UD gets Josh and Kendall back in time for the start of the A-10 season on December 30th vs. LaSalle, they should be just fine.

Until then, to quote that eminent philosopher Charles Cooke:

"We don't need to worry about rankings; we don't need to worry about who can play; we just need to win."

Pickin’ Splinters provided a recap of the Alabama tilt:

And also cranked out a nice overview of the 2016-2017 Flyers:

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
