Kostas update
David JablonskiVerified account @DavidPJablonski 3m3 minutes ago
An injury update on @DaytonMBB's Kostas Antetokounmpo
http://www.daytondailynews.com/sport...6xDTcqaOKAG0J/
“It was diagnosed as a bone bruise on his knee,” Grant said. “He’s doing treatment and rehab daily with our trainer. It probably will be mid to late September before we get him back on the court.”
Grant expects Antetokounmpo to be ready for the start of the season. Until he returns to practice, he’s going through a daily routine with trainer Mike Mulcahey.

On the one hand, he said a bone bruise. But on the other hand, he provided a timeline. I'm used to Archie bone bruises being career threatening.

Is Archie still in charge of the injury report? Do the doctors at UD just call everything a bone bruise? Has any team ever had more bone bruises than UD?
(BTW we need a ROFL smilie which is what I wanted to use)
The real question is how deep is the bruise?

Grade 14 sounds about right but I heard the outer inner tibial central transverse plate is only a grade 8 which is great news!!!!!!

It was so deep that it fractured his tibia.

Wilt the Stilt had a deep bone bruise when he visited UD, but he had breakfast at the Gibson and it cleared it up.

Hoping Kostas will be at full speed by time conference play starts... enable us to close out on those tough A-10 guards - as he'll help protect the rim.
Kostas and Xerius are both athletic enough to become our new version of Chris Wright-Charles Little - on the defensive end of the court (block party!!!).

If he is back by mid to late September like everything has been suggested, there is no reason to think he would not be full speed when the season starts. Practices do not even start until the end of September. He would have 42 days of practice before the first game.

This professional athlete was off her back and back to work the next day, so I bet Kostas recovers quickly.

He has a sleeve on his left knee. I will leave all further speculation and analysis to all of the UDpride doctors.

OK it's only a 5 second video of Kostas ball handling, under no defensive pressure.... but was anyone else imprssed with his quickness and coordination for a big man? Dude seems to have skills.

For a big man? Yes. If he's being guarded by Sam Miller he'll score 100 points per game. But he will eventually need to handle the ball well (no qualifier). He'll be guarded on the wing by someone like Charles Cooke.
But he's young, and I am hopeful for great things to come.

A five second video can tell you a lot especially if you have an eye for talent and skill. Based on that five second video Kostas should be the seventeenth player drafted in the first round of the 2020 draft when he comes out early.

Fair point and my comment can seem very silly can't it? - but I can assure you that I could never handle a BB that well, nor anyone I have played with. Sometimes natural ability just jumps at you. I saw similar (but different) athleticism in XW last year at the Duquesne game here in Pittsburgh.

Jesus, Frances, lighten up--I didn't say Sam was a horrible defender or a horrible person, I just used him as an example of [insert generic big man who doesn't guard ball handlers on the wing very often or well]. You disagree??
Would you rather I use Big Steve? Of course not. Jordan Pierce? Never played a game yet. Dwight Howard? Then people b**ch about false equivalence, Howard is a pro and probably could guard many college players on the wing. Kurt Huelsman? Then you'd complain that there's no point in drudging up someone from so long ago.
Drink a beer. It's Friday.

From DDN- “Kostas is one of a kind,” Darrell Davis said. “His talent was blessed. It can’t be coached. If he keeps putting in the work, he has a chance to be in the NBA.”
Sounds **** promising. I hope we can keep him 3 years- likely a stretch if he's that good.

I'll make sure to attend your sensitivity training to make sure your little snowflake isn't damaged next time.
Of course if I follow your advice above, everyone on the board who isn't struggling to figure out which bathroom to use will say "why on earth did Gazoo reference some guy named Seth Dugan, and what in the heck does Seth Dugan have to do with Kostas and the Flyers?" We all know who Sam is, so the mental picture of Sam guarding a decent ball handler on the wing is a little easier trip home than asking people to look up video on Seth.

I'm all for being sensitive but facts are still facts. Sam Miller is not a talented defender. Is it because he is big and not that quick on the wing? Maybe. Is it because his defensive effort is often lacking? Maybe. Regardless of the reason, still a fact.
A cheap shot would have been to reference his boxing prowess.

These kids are not professional players. They are part of OUR team. We don't pay them to see them play.
We are really cavalier about taking shots at our players. John Crosby is the best example. We put undue pressure on the kid by constantly making him the butt of nasty (unfunny) jokes. We all are all too familiar with the outcome. Thankfully, that seems to have stopped.
The Sam Miller example is probably not the strongest example to make a point. My takeaway from the post is that we need to lay off our players. I think that UD2 is trying to nip it in the bud before the (potentially long) season starts.
It's not really funny and is potentially destructive to our players confidence and reputation...
Let's show some class when we post.

Sam Miller will never suit up for the Flyers again. I believe in second chances, but playing basketball and getting a top rate education for free is a privilege and not a right. He lost that right when he was arrested for being an idiot.

So Kostas' Nigerian name is Ndubuisi. Bucky should be happy he goes by his Greek name.
And for all of you have turned this into a thread about whether we should all be nice or mean to UD players why don't you start your own thread or go to private messages with an argument that we all know is never going to end.

It wasn't supposed to be funny. It wasn't funny. It had nothing to do with comedy. It wasn't attacking any current or former player.
It was a statement of fact. Kind of like saying "KP is not a threat to take 3 pointers." Does that hurt KP's confidence? Geeze I hope not. The only thing it does (apparently) is get your panties in a knot.
All I said was Kostas better be able to beat good wing defenders off the dribble, not some other guy who also happens to be 6'10" tall like Kostas is. Is that the part you missed---I wasn't picking Sam at random, I was picking him because he's the same height as Kostas. Kostas won't be guarded by another 6'10" guy, he'll be guarded by some guy who is a good wing defender.

Not so sure... I mean I really don't know how the Nigerian alphabet works, so I can't rule out the possibility Ndubuisi is actually pronounced BUD-WHY-ZURR.

To show my support for Gazoo I will kneel down in my office every time someone posts something that in any way, shape or form isn't 100% supportive of his constitutionally protected thoughts and feelings.

Shame shame shame!!!
How dare anyone pick on, let alone not coddle a poor student athlete that simply had a bad day and is probably in need of a warm safe space. To dis a former Flyer just because he besmirched the name of the U and the basketball program and exposed it and us to national ridicule is outrageous and can't be tolerated. Just because he broke several laws, attacked a woman and a fellow prisoner (who might have been a friend if Sam had only not forced him to defend himself and in the process beat our 6'9" basketball warrior to a pulp), should we not all have big Sam's back? And to top it off... the outlet for the pile on of poor Sam came on a social media basketball chat board! Despicable! Heinous! What were you thinking !!!!If we continue to fail good men like SM, how the can we expect to recruit other players who can average 4 points a game?????

Offseason UD Pride is an awful, awful place. Basically every thread devolves into an embarassing place
Regarding Kostas - I'm most interested to see if he can run the offense. The Bucks unleasing "Point Giannis" was an awesome development. I know Giannis is in another stratosphere, but hopefully some skills have been developed, as apparently they work out a good amount together. Especially with the lack of solid PGs on the roster, having Kostas handle ballhandling/playmaking would be great

Run the offense? He wasn't recruited to be a point forward so let's be realistic.
I'm Royally hoping he can average 5 pts and 5 rbs a game this season. For someone of his size and skillset, 5/5 would be a great season.

You must not visit many message boards. This is one of the most tame ones I have seen out there other than maybe Davidson's.

I'm not trying to get on a soap box and cause controversy, my message is plain and simple...it would be great if we all try not to unnecessarily ridicule or embarrass players that represent our university. All of us would love to take shots at SM for his unexplainable antics but refrain out of respect for the player, player's family and the university.
I thrive on factual discussions with some sort of logical and controversial opinion but part ways when (in an open forum) the cheap shots begin

I guess I'll never understand why on a college bball forum some people find it their duty to be the morals police. These aren't kids, they're adults.
I'm sure other 'normal' UD students have done worse and we have simply never heard about it; therefore, we aren't critquing their actions. The only reason we know who SM is, is because he was receiving a $50k a year in scholarship to throw an orange ball in a hoop. If these ADULTS want to accept $200k+ from UD for free education -- while others are taking loans out and paying them back monthly for the next 20 years -- then I'm sorry, but you need to be held to a higher set of standards for your actions. And with those higher standards may come some harsh criticism if you assault people in a bar and stupidly get in a fight in prison.

It's an awful, awful place. And yet - here you are!
It's the off-season. We have some basketball to speculate about, but otherwise we discuss current events (like Sam Miller assaulting a woman, urinating on the floor and starting a fight). We also like to make jokes and have fun. It's OK.
You should try it.

Yet that is exactly what you and a few others are doing with posts like this. Telling the rest of us what is morally acceptable (in your world) to write on a message board all the while judging others for voicing their opinions on what is acceptable and what isn't. That is hypocrisy at its finest so maybe it's you and others that should 'lighten up Francis' or 'get a life'.
Oh, and the age of the athlete has exactly nothing to do with what is acceptable and what is not.

This has taken on a life of it's own. 1 person says I took a cheap shot at Sam and now it's on the internet so it must be true.
I never took a cheap shot, made a joke at his expense, etc. on this thread. It's just not what happened. Now I'm sure you'll respond by saying "I never said you did" but following the string of posts it follows the discussion topic and it's just not true.
I have, undoubtedly, taken shots at players on other threads. Just not this one.

And since this is the internet, the only thing he accomplished was to invite more ridicule towards Sam. This was inevitable.

Just so we are clear - it was a UD basketball internet board that brought more ridicule to Sam?
I can see the news room now:
REPORTER: "Sir, we have a report of a Dayton basketball player who punched a woman, kicked a police car, urinated on the floor of his jail cell, then got the crap beat out of him when he slapped the other guy in his cell"
EDITOR: "Hmmmm...we should leave it alone"
REPORTER: "Did I mention there is video from the cop car AND from the jail?"
EDITOR: "I don't know...seems kind of flimsy. What do the basketball message boards say?"
REPORTER: "This one guy on UDPride totally calls out Sam for his actions"
EDITOR: "Run the story!!!!"
Yeah - it was just like that. Or maybe Sam brought the ridicule upon himself.

Haha. I agree wholeheartedly he brought it on his self. Just saying that in this particular thread about Kostas he invited more ridicule on Sam. Things may have stayed on topic for a few more posts.

Can't we all just get along...
I've said my fair share of nasty messages to other pride members that I wished I hadn't. (In this Public Forum) I try to follow my acid test for humor, critique, etc. is would I say it to their parent's face. If so...then I hit the send button, if not then I hit the delete button.
I think there are many of us that have a hair-trigger when our players are criticized and attacked. I certainly do. I am not likely to change just as others will not change being on the other edge of criticism.
Threads like this achieve at least one thing...heightening the awareness to these types of potential issues.
I'm not trying to have the last word but IMO I've said my peace.
BTW - Gazoo...you're explanation is mostly right!

I've been coming to UD Pride for years, off and on PridePlus member, but I can honestly say I come to these forums less now than I ever have, largely because of the PC bs by some to create a safe space for 20 year old adults that are only well known bc they throw an orange ball throuh a circle better than the rest of us. So as I scroll through another derailed thread where some snowflakes think we need to take it easy on Sam because 'he's a kid, represents UD and tradition,' etc....I'm sorry, but no.
I'm not policing anything. Every adult that creates a crime (UD student or not) need to be held to the same standard (if anything Sam need to be held to a higher standard). Treat Sam like you would any thug that would do this. Please don't defend how he is judged in the public eye and say things like 'give his family privacy' and 'let's not embarrass Sam' simply because he is (was) a UD student. You wouldn't say that about Joe Schmo in east Dayton.
I started coming to UD Pride b/c I'm a UD fan. So as a UD fan I would like to open a thread titled 'Kostas' and read about Kostas.

I'll start it off again. Kostas is 6'10" or 6'11" and possibly still growing and can bring the ball up and run the court as good as a point guard! He is only a freshman and is a better shooter than either of his older brothers! I am happy he chose Dayton because, as a season ticket holder, I know I am going to enjoy watching him play for the Flyers no matter if he stays one, two, three or four years.
I don't want to start any comparisons because he has not even played his first college game yet but I enjoyed watching Danny Manning take Kansas to the 1988 National Championship. Danny Manning was 6'10" and could run the floor like a deer. Kostas can do the same but will need time to develop and adjust to the college game!
I hope his knee is okay from the get go because if Greek Freak 2.0 is half as good as Giannis the original Greek Freak we will be in for a real treat!

I certainly applaud all that, but Danny Manning ran the floor like a deer when few others could. Today there are tons of tall ones that can do the same. What helps separate Kostas is his shared DNA with his NBA brother. I think comparing him to his brother might be ok? The possible versatility is undeniable.

I see your last response was a month ago was on another Kostas thread and you were preoccupied with Wilt Chamberlain in your posts.

Saw on the TV crawl last night that Giannis will not be with the Bucks for several more days while dealing with the passing of his father. Any word on how long Kostas will be away?
I have family across the county. I can't imagine what it must be like gathering family from around the world.

In this article, Jason Kidd says "...it's going to be some time..." before Giannis returns.

Kostas has returned to campus, was at practice yesterday. Still not cleared for contact.
"Since he’s a big piece of our team, we’re going to take it slow,” Landers said. “We’re not going to rush him back. He’s just taking it day by day, and when he comes back, it’s going to be nice.”

Saw this article on FiveThirtyEight about Kostas' brother and thought some might be interested. Didn't want to start a new thread about it, so thought I would reference it here:

Giannis just signed a long term extension with Nike and will be getting a signature shoe for the 2018-19 season. Hopefully the Flyers will get some sweet limited editions of those next season.

Are you kidding? If my wife goes 30 days without a purchase at DSW, they send a car to the house to make sure she is alive.

A very old-timer here. Where do men get shoes these days?

I get everything online. Much easier than going to a store plus there are a lot of places that have free returns so if you aren't sure what size you need you can buy a couple and just return the pair you don't need.

Wow, sounds easier to go to the store, get fitted, try 'em on, and go.

Anybody else watch the Cavs/Bucks game last night.
My lord if Kostas is half the player his big brother in than we have another future NBA player on the roster.
Kostas needs to work on his upper body. He is built almost identical to his big brother except for the upper body. Giannis looks strong physically up top. They both have sticks for legs.

When I lived in Dallas, there was a men's shoe store called Larry's shoes. They had a bar inside the store. Had its advantages. Of course you could always pop a tab at home before you sat down to shop online. And if your wife would serve you then Larrys might not have an advantage. Lol.

We need to be careful about comparing him to his brother. I get that there are physical similarities. Just like every short white wide receiver to enter the NFL in the last 10 years is "The Next Wes Welker"...just because he's short and white.
I fall into the same trap with Kostas. It's easy to watch Giannis and get excited about what Kostas could be, but that's not fair to Kostas. He can't possibly live up to those expectations.

At 19, Giannis was an NBA rookie.
Kostas will be a 20 year old freshman next week...
With that said, 'if' isn't going to happen.
