2018-19 Season Previews (Media)
Thought we could start a thread to compile all of the different websites and media outlets with their UD-related previews/predictions. I will start it off with this one from a website called Busting Brackets.
The writer definitely is not looking through rose colored glasses but, at times, I wonder if his glasses aren't in need of a good cleaning. The main things that make me scratch my head are:
- In his starters section he only names four starters, Landers, Cunningham, Crutcher, and either Toppin or Mikesell
- He thinks Landers is a guard
- Thinks Jordan Davis was/is a bench player
Overall, his best case scenario is a top five finish in the conference with no tournament.

I remember back in the day I used to buy Street & Smith's preview every year. It was great looking back at the end of the year to see how wrong these so-called "experts" were, especially when it came to mid and lower major conferences. It just shows you how little homework these guys actually do. It's all word of mouth and based on previous year's stats. It's a lot like recruiting sites.
I like flying under the radar this year!

@JonRothstein
Rhode Island freshman Jermaine Harris is the most physically imposing big man the Atlantic 10 has seen since Mo Alie-Cox was at VCU. Heck of a shooter too.
@JonRothstein
Fatts Russell is an under-the-breakout guy nationally. Showed flashes as a freshman. Should be one of the top scorers in the Atlantic 10 as a sophomore.
@JonRothstein
Early prediction on Rhode Island's starting five: Jeff Dowtin, Fatts Russell, Tyrese Martin, Cyril Langevine, Jermaine Harris.

Rothstein was also at Bryant yesterday and reading the tweets about Bryant, you would have thought they were a bunch of All-Americans. While we know Russell and Dowtin are both really good, I wouldn't put too much stock into this.

Darn good preview. Unlike some of the others, these guys have done their homework and cross all the t's. Their indication of the middle of the A10 being jumbled, and UD with upside potential of a top 5 finish makes sense.

"but the Flyers have the upside of a Top 5 finish in the league."
I like this phrase!
I agree they actually mentioned newcomers by name, did a good analysis of the team play last year (shots, defense, etc), although I thought one mistake was mentioning XW as a key loss ... that didn't happen AFTER last season, it happened DURING last season.

I agree this was a good review and they obviously did their homework. My only issue was they said we made the NCAA four out of five years, which is true if you include last year or the year before we went, but we went four years in a row. I am also surprised that they did not talk about Crutcher more. Not that they said anything bad about him but in my opinion he is on the road to being a great point guard and I think, if they don't know it already, people are going to be wowed by him this year.

The overriding issue with all these preseason ratings is the perception that UD is in disary with all the defections, and the belief that some of the defections(Williams and Crosby and Kostas) were a critical part of the team. We are really a black box for these folks as they have no idea that the additions to the program far outweigh the losses, not to mention the improvement in team morale and togetherness. We will be a suprise to a lot of folks.

I'll be interested to see where we land when the A 10 Coaches poll comes out. That to me will be more telling as to what is really thought of about the talent on our team.

I agree with this
I think some of the reason people are down playing Dayton's chances is that while Crutcher and Jordan Davis had good seasons last year they weren't eye popping like a Kellan Grady that gets the national medias attention.
If you're someone who watched 1 or 2 games and looked at the stats those guys are probably bigger question marks
A10 coaches probably have a better feel on how good the returning talent is

I agree, but figure it will be 9 ish.
Face it, we weren't very good, and had a lot of turnover. Coaches focus on their team and recruiting in the off season. I doubt many know much more that the headlines about a team.

OSUFlyer: There is a good thought. Every year the A10 coaches meet prior to the season. They concur on officiating emphasis changes and stuff. But, they also participate on a survey where they vote on the finish order of teams in the conference. Does anybody know the date of this event so that I can look forward to seeing what the coaches think about Dayton in relation to the other clubs in the league?

Evans is expected to be out 4-6 months from his surgery in June, so best case start of season, but probably the start of A10 play.

That is the typical time frame, but this was his second achilles injury in less than 12 months. They are being cautious after this one.

But many of these kids on the A10 rosters were recruited by multiple teams in the league so these coaches probably know better than anyone the talent level on each team. I feel like its a more accurate assessment of where we stand talent wise. I'm guessing close to 5th or 6th from the coaches.

Speaking of VCU, as many of us thought Moe Allie-Cox would make a good tight end.

I was one of those who thought he might be a good tight end. The guy is huge, strong, and very athletic. He has great hands as well. I think you might see him on Sunday afternoons very soon.

I see the top four in one class, five through ten as second tier, and 11-14 picking up the rear. UD could be fifth or tenth in pre season rankings depending on different arguments for/against all the teams in he second tier.
It will take a strong showing by the sophomore guards, Ryan Mikesell playing well, and one/two of the freshmen players to break out for UD to move up to the top tier this year.
As an aside, who is Grant Golden? I don't recall him when UD played Richmond last year.

Golden put 15.6 ppg and 6.7 boards per game as a redshirt freshman.
I think we recruited his brother Bryce who's gonna be a freshman at Butler this year

I thought Grant Golden was the real deal. He has a well rounded game, unlike their previous big, who was great on offense, and terrible on defense.

I see an October 4 date when practices can start in earnest. Also, from my reading on the web, it appears from last year that there will be a coaches league meeting sometime in the middle of October. In that meeting the coaches vote on who they think will win the league and where Dayton would finish. I asked earlier for someone to confirm but no one answered. Is mid October correct?

Nice piece...Archdeacon on Cohill
https://www.mydaytondailynews.com/sp...54cGo4nVTdXwN/
“But I wasn’t looking for the flashing lights or the big city. There’s a lot to do in the big city and I know, being 18, you can start to act funny when you get away from home. So maybe I just thought about long-term goals and stuff like that.
“A smaller area like Dayton is cool for me. I can get to know a lot of people on campus, not just be lost in the crowd. And basketball is the thing here. I didn’t want to go to a school where football was the big thing or to a city where nobody cared about the team.
“Dayton was the right place for me.”

As practices will start in earnest on October 4, I have a question for you astute sports performance management mavens. I have been reading some articles on the web about a variety of performance tracking technologies. Using RFID, a chip is placed on the ball. A chip is placed on the players clothing. Given a few student assistants managing the software, a variety of analytics can be tracked. Farming this data can provide insights into player enhancement opportunities. Statistics such as speed of a shot, elevation of the shot, speed of the pass, running speed, position of players on particular plays and other data can be mined. I will not mention the names of the competitive products here. Can anyone share some information about data gathering during practices? Can this software be active during exhibition games? Can this software be active during non-conference games? Can this software be active during A10 or NCAA games? I do believe that it is all about the data.

Pretty fair assessment up and down the board but especially about Dayton. Seems to have some actual knowledge about team's rosters and not just a look at last year and what they lost vs. what they gained in recruits/transfers/JUCO's.

I think he's right on the toss up nature of the league.
Seems like he values the bevy of transfers UMass has coming online. He's the most down out of any preview I've seen on Richmond
How good are the raft of transfers Duquesne and UMass have? How big of a jump do Crutcher, Jordan Davis and Landers take in year of starting? Can St. Joes stay healthy?
Lots of question marks abound

The CBB Central preview also looks like the lowest ranking yet for Davidson I've seen in a preview.
I think most of the national guys see Grady and the Icelandic guy back and pencil them in the top 2

Yep. Peyton Aldridge was just a role player. Easy to replace.

Yeah, if you look at their front court they got wiped out from this last year. Two of their bigs (Nigerian and Euro guy) have dealt with injuries throughout
Looking at their board it sounds like they're counting on a freshman Euro up front pending how well the other two bigs return from injury
I get that someone like McKillop gets the benefit of doubt but there's some real question marks for them up front in my opinion

Interesting that they predict losing to UD, but then beating St Louis by 22 (?) and beating Indiana.
I like the way they look at the Flyers.

First rating site that actually knows what they are talking about. Has the Flyers pegged pretty well. Lot of unknowns this year's team but we could be a handful. AG's game time coaching will come into play and it will be interesting to see that in action, with a full roster that has everyone on the same page.

Unspectacular stint at VCU?? Averaged over 25 wins per season and averaged 15-3 in the conference in three years with two NCAA's and an NIT.

While I agree with Dayton at 4, Richmond at 5 is WAY to high and St. Joe (if they can stay healthy) is WAY too low at 7.

I agree. It’d better if UMass and Richmond switched. I think UMass is a sleeper with Matt McCall.
Maybe the most accurate guess would be UMass 7, St Joes 5 and Richmond 10.

Matt Norlander ranks the teams from 1 to 353. UD comes in at #140
There's 5-7 teams that I feel like I'm 10-15 spots too low on, and I can't shake the feeling Dayton's one of them.

Bottom of the heap
Notice that Norlander has UD ranked at the bottom of the SW Ohio group - Cincinnati, Xavier, Ohio State, Wright State, Miami (OH) and even Northern Kentucky are ahead of the Flyers in this list!

The Norlander rankings are great locker room bulletin board posting for the Flyers. Talk about lack of respect. There are about 50 schools above us that are head shakers. Let the season start next week and these blind dart throwers go back in their holes.

Bernstein may have Flyers slotted accurately, but the guy is pretty much a nut job if you check out his bio. Seems to light the fuse and run...

Fearless Fosdick Predicts the Flyer's Future
Well here it is. The Dayton Flyer's Men's team will go 18-13 and 9-9 in A-10 play. No NCAA tourney this year unless they win the Conference tournament. Go Flyers!

It's behind a paywall (So I don't want to copy/paste or anything), but last week ESPN put out their preseason rankings 1-353.
A few highlights:
They have us ranked 128. The 5 teams ahead of us are UC Davis, Toledo, South Dakota, Valpo and Yale. The 5 behind us are Penn, Iona, VCU, Rutgers, and Middle Tennessee State. That's the company we keep these days.
They have us ranked 6th in the A10.
For good measure - Wright State was 135.
