The Final Five

WEST BLOOMFIELD (MI) -- No, the old dude didn’t lose track of time. I do realize that the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship game was last week. And no, I didn’t forget how to count, either. Villanova and Michigan did indeed square off in the final game of the Final Four. The “Final Five” that the above title refers to are the final five roster spots for your 2018-2019 University of Dayton Flyers. John Crosby, Xeyrius Williams and Jordan Pierce are making like horsesh*t and hitting the proverbial trail; Kostas Antetokounmpo and Matej Svoboda are turning pro -- Kostas having entered his name into the NBA draft and Matej heading home to play in Europe.

Here is what Coach Anthony Grant has left in the locker room:

Freshmen: Dwayne Cohill, Obadiah Toppin
Sophomores: Jordan Davis, Jalen Crutcher,
Juniors: Trey Landers, Jhery Matos, Ryan Mikesell
Seniors: Josh Cunningham

AG has a lot of options here, among them are:

-- HS seniors with 4 years of eligibility
-- Junior College transfers with 2 (and on rare occasions 3) years of eligibility
-- Grad transfers who are immediately eligible (most for only one year)
-- D-1 transfers who would have to sit out one year and play 1, 2 or 3 years, depending

Ideally, AG will be able to snag a grad transfer PG to help lessen the load on Jalen Crutcher. That PG will hopefully be replaced by a HS Class of 2019 PG recruit, of which there are many to choose from. There are also a ton of prime recruits who have backed out of their previous college commitments due to the ever-spinning coaching carousel. That would help to better balance the classes. Add another grad transfer and another JC player, bank the 5th scholarship until next year and call it a day.

Elsewhere in college hoops and the world in general:

-- All of the above would change drastically if the NCAA is stupid enuf to allow immediate eligibility to transfers:

-- It’s always fun when you encounter someone with whom you played pickup hoops and see that they are now doing it for a living. It certainly ain’t the NBA, but Urbane Bingham, who I hooped with on the outdoor courts at Seaholm HS in Birmingham is suiting up for the Washington Generals:
