Spring - Eastern Michigan

Their new HC Darcy Dorton played at Penn State with Alyssa. Both have National Championship rings.

EMI returns 12 players from a 21-14 team. They made the NCAAs and ironically were the 4th team sent to ILL for the first weekend. UD lost to Louisville in the first round and EMI lost to ILL in the first round.

EMI was a good digging team last year with 5 players basically digging 2+ per set. By comparison we only had 3 players at 2+. On the flip side, EMI wasn’t a great blocking team - averaging just under 2/set. Both teams graduated their Liberos. Both teams graduated an OH. EMI also ran a two-setter offense last year, but graduated one of those setters. They only have the other setter on the roster this spring, but she is a senior this fall. UD returns both of our setters. I expect we will run a 6-2 against this year so we can have 3 hitters on the front row at all times. Maura will take over the Libero spot.

The competition will come at the hitter positions and we have a ton of options that are all very talented. I think Alli, Jamie and Amelia will be in the rotation. Brooke will probably be back playing 3 rotations at Setter and 3 as a Rightside hitter. That’s 4 of our 6 hitter spots. And all will have to battle to keep their spot in the rotation because we only need two more hitters (one MB and one OH/RS). The options to fill out our hitting spots is deep and talented (4 of the 6 are top 250 recruits): Rachael, Sierra, Olivia, Jordan, Molly and Mikaylah. It will be a battle to see who ends up in the rotation at our 6 hitter spots. I can say we need to be better this year in 4 areas from our hitters. 1. We need better blocking. 2.28 per set wasn’t great. 2. We need better production from the Rightside OH. That’s better blocking and better at terminating balls, both cross court and down the line shots. 3. We need at least one OH who can go 6 rotations and attack from the backrow. To be really good, we need two of these. We got very little offense out of the backrow last year. And finally, 4. from the MB position, we need to improve our ability to run a slide attract. PT is available if you can fill these needs.

All starts today at 1 pm at Frericks.

There were 3 players you'd assume be part of the rotation that were not playing. Brooke Westbeld had a sling on her right arm, and Mikaylah and Amelia were not there due to illness from what I overheard in the stands. Molly Asmus and Jordan Albaraan didn't play at all.

From that, it was hard to figure out what might happen this year from a rotation perspective. It just seems like there could be so many options.

The easiest thing to see was that Maura Collins was the Libero, and Carissa Beyer seemed to be the main DS with Elizabeth House the second DS, and possible serve specialist. Maura is a very good scrappy player. There was one point where the ball was barely in on the line that she just either misjudged or couldn't make it to, and she was upset with herself and almost booted the ball into the end nets, but just soccer kicked it over to the bench.

#1 MB was Olivia Dubay, and #2 MB was Racheal Fara, transfer from Northwestern. Both of them played very well. With no Amelia, Mikaylah or Molly in a MB rotation, it's hard to know how the rotation might work out. Amelia seemed the foregone conclusion for starter going forward from last year, but the injury hampered her, and Olivia was still returning to from from injury.

Setter was Doherty in the first set going 6 rotations and Vondran in set 2 going 6 rotations. Then in 3 and 4, there were both in, with Vondran going 6 rotations. Vondran had some nice blocks when she was in the front row. There were a few misses from setter to hitter, but otherwise, things looked okay. I never watch setters completely, so I might have missed some intel there.

As for hitters. Jamie and Alli played 6 rotations from time to time, but there were some struggles in receive/digs. I think this is natural, as hitters are meant to hit, not dig. They both had very nice back row attacks though, so that will be a nice addition that we haven't had a whole lot of lately. Sierra was playing right side when the setter wasn't up there.

UD won 3 sets to 1, 20, 23, -21, and 18.

With 3 returning players not playing, 2 freshman and a CC transfer coming in, it will be interesting to see how things work out in the fall from a rotation perspective. Lots of possibilities.

Thank you figgie. I noticed Mikaylah and Amelia were missing in the twitter picture so out due to illness makes sense. Hopefully Brooke’s sling isn’t too serious, like a shoulder issue.

Great to hear Josie put up some blocks. Brooke and Bridget have 2 years left, but Josie and reshman Livie will be pushing them and learning from them preparing to turn the setting over.

Maura is great now, but will be unreal before she is done. Good to hear Carrissa and Liz are also competing for playing time.

Its always hard to learn too much from spring matches, but it sounds like a good performance by a fraction of UDs full roster against a strong MAC program returning a lot of their roster.

This team has a lot of question marks. The news that Brooke is in a sling adds a new question mark, where there wasn't one before. She was potentially the biggest sure thing given her production from so many perspectives of the game. Hopefully, she has a full recovery from her current issue.

Hopefully, the next few weeks allow Amelia and Mikaylah to get out there, and we get good news about Brooke.

This team has so much potential. I can't wait to watch it all come together. I really like the fact that so many key pieces for the 2019 Flyers have not had a chance to put their true stamp on this program yet. I know the 2018 Flyers won the A-10 tournament and championship, but the 2019 Flyers are still going to want to earn it for themselves. This 2019 team is going to be so hungry.
