The win over Loyola secured the 3rd seed and pairs us against VCU at 4:30 pm on Friday. The winner gets #2 seed Davidson on Saturday at 4:30 pm.

VCU split with GW this past weekend losing in 5 on Sunday. We split with VCU during the regular season.

Flyers take 1st set over VCU, 25-18 led by the REAL A10 POY Almodovar hitting .444 on 9 swings with no errors. I’ll get to my POY comments later, but I hope Lexie not winning fires up this team and they play with a chip on their shoulders. (And that’s no disrespect to McNabb who got the award. It was between the two of these players, but Lexie had better stats.) I remember the year Amanda Cowdrey was left off all post season awards and she flat our carried the team to the A10 Championship while on her way to the tournament MVP. Let’s get that for Lexie too.

Our hitters are eating VCU alive. 4 hitters over .300 is unreal. Team hitting .370. Moore, Almodovar, Russell, Yates leading the way. You don’t do that unless your passing is good and your setter is placing the ball well. Up 23-20 in the 2nd.

TO UD. VCU ahead 15-10. We got it to 10-11 and then made a couple errors. Good TO. Settle down. We have been scoring in bunches of 3, so chip away at this lead with focused plays.

VCU wins the 3rd. We played from behind all set. I don’t think we ever lead. So you just have to let it go and come out on fire in the 4th. It’s like golf. Don’t let the last shot (bad) influence your next shot. We got it to 10-11 and then made too many errors and they got up by as many as 7. Clean up our side of the net. We control our destiny.

Go Flyers. Close this out.

Flyers win 25-16 and advance.

Freshman Kaminski goes on at least a 7 point service run to put UD up 24-15. She served aggressive enough to keep VCU from setting in system and getting a side out. On our side of the net, we go to our 2 best players. K Taylor. K Lexie. K Amelia. K Amelia. K Lexie. Error VCU. K Our Senior Grace. K VCU and then K Lexie.

Flyers Win 3-1.

We are two matches from the NCAA. Its the only carrot out there for us. We will have to play our best volleyball of the season -- back to back -- to give ourselves a reasonable chance of hoisting mahogany.

We ran a faster offense last night. Several shoot-sets to the MBs who both had good nights. The slide sets to Amelia were also quicker. They weren’t high back sets that give the blockers both time to get the block set, and know where the attack is coming along the net. With a high backset the ball has to travel down which becomes “X marks the spot” to set the block. If your setter can back set a ‘flatter’ ball it’s both quicker and the blockers have no way to know where the hitter will contact the ball to stop it. Amelia crushed one of these from Alyssa last night. Best set/slide I’ve seen for a couple years from Dayton. It was clear they worked on some new sets the past week or two. Alyssa will be a big key today. I think she set well last night. 48 assists in 4 sets —the math says you’re doing a good job getting the ball to the right hitter. But she did have other errors in her game that she can hopefully clean up today.

GW beat SLU 3-1 yesterday. They were the higher seed, but SLU had been playing very well since they beat us a couple weeks ago. GW might be the sleeper team in this tournament. They also played Loyola the first weekend of conference play. They pushed them to 5 sets the 2nd day/match, after losing 1-3 the first day. I expect this to be a hard fought battle.

GW lives another set after being down 0-2, they win the third 25-23 to send it to a 4th. GWs right side OH Liv Womble has put on a hitting clinic this tournament. She hit .528 against SLU yesterday and around .500 today. Talley from both days so far is 61 swings with only 1 error. She will make the all-tourney team.

LUC survives winning tge 5th 15-12. GW had 10 errors in that set giving LUC 10 of their 15 points. You aren’t going to win giving up that many points. LUC through to the Finals.

Flyers go up 1-0 winning the first set 25-19. We gave up 3 service aces long early and played from behind until about half way thru then took the lead and it was even or +1 for awhile. But we took it to another gear around 17 point and pulled away.

Stat sheet is again filled up with great performances.

Taylor Russell leads in points with 14.5. Lexie has 13 points and was the kill leader with 11. Alyssa had a career day with 11 points, 10 kills and 29 assists for a double-double. Brooke Smith had 8 kills and 9 points. She did not play that well yesterday. She played great in the 3rd set today when we needed another go-to scorer. Davidson did a great job limiting both our middles, but Amelia contributed 7.5 points and Layne 6. And none of that is possible without great back row play from Anna, Grace and Karissa. Great team win.

I think the best I have seen them play this year. Props to the Athletic Dept for sending a pep band. I went back to look at the other matches and even STL did not have a band there.

9th straight trip to the conference finals. It was our 20th win of the season. Figgie will have to report how many 20 win seasons we’ve had. And not counting the shortened Covid year, how many 20-win seasons in a row. Thanks.

Update…write up said it was Dayton’s 34th 20-win season.

Well we got our one match winner-take-all scenario. Although we split the series Id put Loyola as the prohibitive favorite. They have been way more consistent start to finish this year. But they did need to squeak it out vs GW and we got out of the semis in 4 sets. Id put our chance at about 25% which means we'd win about 1 in 4 matches vs Loyola. Since we already split the first two, wisdom would say Loyola wins this one.

Hopefully some of that pride and tradition in the program to step up and "get er done" once again shines. It would be a great reward for these players in a season that's been as trying as any in the last decade or so.
