Standing or not???
Are we standing till we score as suggested by Coach Grants wife? The only thing I'm concerned about is changing the mojo
while we're undefeated at home !!! I'm not superstitious but I don't like to tempt fate
Thoughts?

How about we are utterly silent until we score. Then we go nuts with a short standing-O.

There are a lot of schools that do this not just X.....I like the idea, anything to build energy. Not sure if it’ll catch on or not though.

I am superstitious and I just know that the one time we try it, will be the one time where we go into one of scoring droughts that everyone's been saying we don't go through this year.

Grant’s family and many others in their section have been doing this for several games already, for whatever it’s worth. Hasn’t seemed to jinx anything yet.

Providence also does this...it was embarrassing when they went past the 4 minute time out once and hadn't scored yet. People were confused and didn't know if they should sit during the timeout....

The average age of the lower bowl in near 85 so I'm not sure it's a good idea unless UD has extra medical staff.

Nevada does this. I watched them stand playing against San Diego State. They went down by like 17 points and did not score in the first five minutes of the game. I think it put added pressure on the team and it looked ridiculous. The fans were hating life. I was getting a good laugh watching it.
I've seen the same thing happen at Xavier. It's really awkward when the home team starts off cold. I think this tradition sucks in so many ways. No way!

Seems like a very odd time to try and start a move like this with 5 home games left on a 17 game home schedule. Also seems kinda “high schoolish.”

I went to a Pitt game and their tradition is to have the cheerleaders go up into the stands and wait till the first basket is made before returning to the floor. Which in the game I went to was over five minutes into the game.
Now this may seem just as silly as having the fans stand. But I can say that even though the cheerleader blocked my view of the game I much preferred the view I had than if I had to look at the bald head of the fan in front of me.

Why do the Lowdest and best fans in all of college basketball need a gimmick that many others already do in their arenas?
Now after this season so as to not jinx what we got going, come up with something entirely different and unique and you might get me to change my mind on gimmicks

Let's all stand up with our hands in the air, section by section, in a circle around the stadium from opening introductions to the first basket!
I'll call it SPIN...no, no, no...ummm, we can call it HANDs...no, no, no...hmmm...how about the WAVE! Yeah, THE WAVE...that's the ticket.

They've been trying to get everyone to turn on their phone's flashlight and wave them during the intro video for 2 years and maybe 10% off the fans have caught on. By 2025 we should be a 50%.

This is the first I'm hearing of this. I've noticed that most of the students do it, but I haven't heard anything about it. How has this been communicated? (Besides, I'm too busy eating my food.)

It has not been promoted very well. Instructions are in the program and occasionally put on the video board. It was mentioned in one of the pregame emails. It is called Runway Lights in the Gameday App.
I have gotten a few people in my section to add the app and do it. I would bet if they offered free chicken to the section with the most people participating there would be a lot more phones lit up.

I do not even try to get my phone out anymore, as UD Arena wifi is the only place I ever go that my phone refuses to automatically connect to the wifi. I can manually connect to the wifi after a minute or so of searching and slow connecting, but if I put my phone away and try to look at something during the next timeout I find I am disconnected and I must go through same routine and hope it connects. Not worth hassle. Anyone else have this issue?

I had the same issue until someone told me I needed to do the sign in page where they ask for your name and email etc. I did and have never had a problems since. You only have to do it one time. Now my phone connects automatically and stays connected.

Bad idea. I was in the Carrier Dome recently for a Syracuse game, and they stand until they score. That night they STOOD FOR 6 MINUTES! Fans get restless.
"Are we gona score?"
"We're down 10-0"!!!
"What's wrong with us tonight???"
The volume of clapping decreases as the time moves on.
A big "WHEW" can be heard when the home team finally scores.
AND....I'm superstitious enough....DONT FIX IT (mid season) IF ITS NOT BROKEN.
GO FLYERS!!!!

I think I performed a Haka when Crutcher hit that last second game-winner.
It scared the kids.

I did a thigh-slapping haka dance at a wedding about 10 years ago and scared the crap out of most of the grandparents. About 2 minutes later, I had all the kids and teens lined up around me, imitating my gestations and slaps. Of course, there was an encore later in the evening when everyone else wanted to join in...alcohol is a great thing!

If UD ever wants a halftime show, I’m available for whatever they pay Red Panda...+$1.00. I’ll get 13,000 minions doing the UD Haka and we’ll all make it into Guinness Book of World Records!

Happy wife. Happy life
I'm not a fan of standing, but if it will make coach's wife happy, thus making him happy, thus making a good impression on talented recruits and continuing success, I'll participate.

I have never liked the idea of standing before the first points. As many have noted, this isn't a new idea and is utilized elsewhere. If we are going to do something, lets do something different and sustainable. Sweater vests can only last for so long doing much of anything and I should know because I still have the same red sweater vest hanging in the closet that I have had for over 25 years.
My view is don't mess with success and win the next five home games the way we have won the previous contests. I've always wondered if the players like the standing or do they feel just a little more pressure to get that first basket?

So we need to have a red sweater vest night. When first basket scored everyone rip off their red sweater vests and twirl them around as the crowd goes crazy.
I know, back to the drawing board........

Good point. If my wife came up with this horrible idea, I would tell her that she is a genius and that she should go out and buy an expensive purse for herself.

We can throw our red sweaters on the court after three Obi dunks, like a hat-trick kind of thing.

Only problem with throwing the sweaters on the court is that only about 8 would make it. The rest would be on the heads of people in the first 20 rows.

Not a fan of the clapstand! It has no value whatsoever!
But something tells me the followers will not be able to help themselves. This will go down in history like the JOB "I stayed until the end of the game" T-shirt, following Obrien's scolding of early departures. And you see where we are on that issue; oh your seat next to bedell is calling; but nobody else is.

It’s only the five weeks into the new year, but this gets my vote for post of the year...no one will beat this IMO. It might have to do with me having over 70 purses in my closet, but I don’t consider that a bias.

The purses go with the 200 pair of shoes. When I’m asked, “How many shoes do you have?” I ask, “In what color?”
I consider my closet a community service project. When my married girlfriends tell me their “better-halves” complain about their volume of clothes-shoes-accessories, I invite their husbands to tour my closet...so they have a point of reference as to what “too many” really means.
Problem solved. Marriage saved. Community service work complete.
I’m taking candidates for franchisee opportunities if any of you feel your wife has the Inventory.

The arena stood until the first basket. They sky did not fall in and no one in the lower arena died in the process.
Nice touch.
I like it more when the crowd stands during defensive possessions in the second. People make fun of the lower arena crowd, but they are very intimidating in the second half. The standing and noise disrupts opponents quite a bit.
UD Arena is a special place.

Though, it must be noted that no one died in the first 50 years of not standing at the arena, either.

Random thought..........
........why don’t the fans stand until the OTHER team makes their first basket? Perhaps offer some defensive incentive. I’d like to see them standing until AFTER the first media timeout.

Influence
I went to one of the first Anthony grant radio shows his first season. The way he interacted with fans before during and after the show was a stark contrast to the previous coach. After that show, I told MrsFF that if he wins games, people are going to be throwing checks at UD every time Coach Grant makes an appearance.
The team is winning games.
Anthony Grant made a comment about his wife wanting fans to stand until the Flyers score.
13k people stood until the Flyers scored.
That is powerful influence.
I haven't heard any updated donation numbers, but merchandise sales are way up as well.

Really, if you get 10% to stand, everyone else must stand or they can't see. Being vertically challenged, Mrs Go-UD-Go can't see even then. Thank goodness for the video board.

I don’t have a horse in this race since I live way out-of-State, but here’s my 2 cents...
If I was sitting in a meeting with UD Athletics, and the topic of doing this came up, I’d probably vote “no”.
The fact it’s coming from AG’s wife and family, factoring in how much AG has impacted the program in less than 3 years, I think it’s a very small “price to pay” for those inclined to vote no. Support the coach’s family in this case because it’s not a big anything other than to say “we’re glad you’re here and part of the Flyer Family.”
When bigger schools come calling, and they will, we don’t need an unhappy family.

Didn’t want to start a new thread and felt this is somewhat related.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the RS handles RI player intros tonight.
I assume there will be no ‘YOU SUCK’ after JT is introduced. It will be interesting to see if they still do a ‘Who Cares’ for him. Knowing the RS they will have something very unique but appropriate in store for him.

Thanks - I assumed he was now starting as I read that he had started a couple games. Bad assumption - I guess we will likely have 2-3 future years of figuring t that out.

I can stand. I can sit. Ill do whatever the folks in my section are keen on doing. I dont want to be the dude sitting when everyone is standing or standing and obstructing when the consensus is to take a seat. Just trying to be a courteous fan to those around me and adapt as the cheering adapts.
On another note, the student section chanting "Obi's Better!!" while Jacob was on the floor was just low-rent garbage. What a shyt-show. Obi's mom and dad are sitting feet from the student section. Get woke? That's Obi's bro out there. That's his parents. I did see Roni stand up and lay into the students on one occasion -- good for her. The woman is a class act and has two kids out there who are -- by almost every single account from every single source -- gentlemen to friends and strangers alike that treat others with respect and are incredible humans in a world over-run with douchebags. Adults and kids love these two because they are so kind and genuine. Were they chanting it in reference to Langevine or Santos-Silva or French-- entirely different animal. They aren't blood.
Its not about being thin-skinned or "not being able to handle it". Everybody will live. Most of us can handle childbirth or kidney stones, but it doesn't mean we wrap bows around either one. Its about just being a friggin' mensch. The chant was not clever or funny. Were it either one perhaps some latitude would have been earned. It's just petty and vindictive and demonstrates literally zero self-awareness of "people in the room". The Internet tough guys and gals that love to flex their bad-assery can die on that mountaintop if they like. The bar is set pretty low. Students were in their seats 90 minutes before the game to think of something astute or cagey or clever. If we can't do better than this, our best really sucks. Somehow we're at the point where showing class is now considered weak and off-putting -- it didn't used to be this way.
The Toppins are part of the Flyer family and Rhody family. That really should have been enough. Fans should have been rooting for a Flyer win and both brothers to play well. Neither were mutually exclusive. It was hard and awkward enough for Obi and Jacob as it is, let alone their parents knowing for one kid to win, the other had to lose. Just chanting "Obi Toppin" would have been a far better choice as it would have raised up Obi without cutting down his brother.

I am glad you said it Chris, and I am surprised it took so long.
When they chanted that the entire section of parents cringed. There was Obi Fam that cringed as well as all the other Fam. I have never heard a collective groan from the parents in the 10 seasons I have been sitting by them.
Obi's mom stood up and her only response to the student section was "Obi's older!"
And trust me...she said it with mom authority.
You never know. You may see a Toppin transfer here one day.
His parents sat in the UD section for the first half and the URI section in the second half. Good for them. Supporting both their kids and not wanting either one to suffer a loss.
I don't care if Obi's brother plays for the opposition. Kid should be family to UD. The Toppin family blessed us with Obi and there is no reason to no appreciate them all. You could see the interaction with Obi and the URI players as you can tell they have been around each other a time or two. The team had mutual respect, there comes a time where we as fans don't cross a certain line.

Dan Curran would walk up to the students and get them to clean it up at times. Perhaps Eric Spina should do the same.
We were at the Richmond game sitting near the students. All night they chanted "Obi sucks". They did also in St. Louis. Even after Obi made SportsCenter plays. Baffling.
We were at a GW game years ago when the students began to chant 45 minutes before the game "F*&^ Ohio".
They received an expensive college education and that is what they come up with?

I've been to games at every A10 opponent except VCU and Davidson (includes Xavier, Temple and Charlotte - Butler doesn't count).
GW students are the worst. Yes, worse than _avier. Witnessed a GW student get ejected from a game. The worst.

Students have always chanted dumb things and they always will. Don't let it ruin the wonderful evening at the Arena.

Low class stuff, but chanting immature crap, getting drunk, burning furniture and loving socialism are just part of being a college student. Most of us did it and so will future generations. Being aghast at it is just part of being an adult, and so goes life.

I don't recall ever loving socialism...maybe I was too drunk to remember it.

There is no leader of the students section that contemplates the ethical implications of what will be chanted. It is an organic thing the percolates and when something comes to the top it is mostly a group lizard brain reaction. That is why student section cheers are often offensive and pedantic. "You suck" is their go-to statement.
The interjections that follow each opponent introduction was a pep band only thing for many years. Its form was four dismissive interjections, "big deal", etc., followed by a concluding "Oh no, not him!" It was mildly funny. Willie put them on cards to get the entire student section to play along. But, he didn't get the humor of dismissive x4 then shocked reaction, so it has become just a spleen venting exercise. To amp up the effect, the students have now added "you suck" to the end of each one.
I really don't know how to get the students to have more of a funny edge and less of a lizard brain "I dislike you" edge. I want more pilot and stewardess, painted blue, chicken fun vibe. I want less "A10 refs suck", "Obi's better", I don't like you, you should die vibe.

I agree wholeheartedly! The first high school I was an AD at had a notorious student section. I made them into an organized school activity and we worked long and hard on them being more creative and witty and less vulgar. It was amazing to see their transformation when they started coming up with more creative things to do because they took ownership in it. My favorite was when we played a team who's uniforms were ugly UPS brown and a large group of the students showed up with FedEx boxes and envelopes and chanted "we use FedEx."
There is a famous letter from the 80's from the then Duke president to their student section asking them to change the obscene cheers into cheers that were "wholesome, witty, and forceful." I used this in my work with our student section. Maybe our president needs to do something similar.

On to a more important question than ‘to stand’ or ‘not to stand’
Why of all places do our fans like to misspell LOWD when what it should be is loUD?

Again, if "Obi's better" is the worst thing chanted, people need to lighten up. Jacob could have been a Flyer and chose not to be. I wish him all of the best, but not when he plays Dayton. And I can guarantee when Obi is in the league, he is going to hear that in every other gym he plays in. I'm all for more clever chants, but let's stop clutching our pearls over the most inane stuff possible. It isn't clever, but it isn't offensive either.

Season Ticket Fan:
Eric Spina does not have the same relationship with the students that Dr. Dan did. If he tried approaching them, I don't think it would go well

The Toppin family is UD's family regardless of first name.

How many people here remember the Jim Paxton (Bill to some of you) vs the John Paxton situation?
When John selected Notra Domus over UD there was discontent in these here parts.
John's first exposure in the Arena was met with on the kind side of the ledger a chorus of BOO'S.
This in the day's of Sit down Digger too. I think unfortunately John played well enough to beat us that day.
Figge's got those details Im sure.
And that family was heavy involved with UD with father and oldest son playing here . I believe after that first time John was treated at least a little better.
So as long as it doesnt get out toward the obnoxious level and doesnt carry on forever Im thinking its to be expected .

Interesting that as soon as Roni stood up and interjected her opinion to the student section, they retreated like the French army. The second time they started the chant, it was more half-baked as 50% of the students realized it was stupid and in poor form. If there was no harm in any of it, then why didnt all the students stand their ground and keep doing throughout the game instead of surrendering like wet-noodled, limp-wristed saps? Where's the balls in that? Why didnt they tell her to go fly a kite?
Everyone has balls until the other side decides to hit back, like when Coach K went over to the Duke student section. Right or wrong on Coach Ks part, when he went over there and gave him a piece of his mind, the expression on all of those college kids' faces was priceless. Half of them looked like they were going to wet themselves and cry. Daddy wasn't happy. Not so tough anymore.
But theres one big difference between the Cameron Crazies and UD students. The Crazies are creative, inventive, clever, and witty. They do their homework. They research the opponents and put an honest day's work in. And when you do that, occasionally you might land a flapjack. Even Ted Williams struck out now and then. But like Ted, the Crazies step in the batter's box every night. What did the UD students do after arriving 90 minutes before the game? They sat on their hands, quiet as a mouse, snapchatting or Redditing or whatever 19yr olds do now until Michael Buffer showed up. They had an hour and a half to work on their craft and dazzle us with their ingenuity so when it was "go time" they had their best stuff ready to fire. All we got was "You Suck" and "Obi's Better". You get far less rope when landing a dud when so little effort and forethought is put into your craft to begin with. That's where these two circumstances completely diverge. Its easy to go the "insult" route. It doesn't take any thinking.
The next time you hear "you suck", remind yourself that a lot of those chants come from the same students that sign up for Arena halftime shooting challenges and then proceed to airball 7 out of 10 shots from the three-point arc. THAT'S sucking. The dudes in uniform going to college for free have more talent in one finger than the rest of us combined. Maybe 5-10 people in the stands would last more than 2 trips up and down the court with Rhode Island and Dayton before crying for oxygen. These are some of the nation's best thoroughbred horses.
When you constantly "go there", you end up revealing far more about yourself -- or lack thereof -- than those you're directing your jabs at. Impress us. Dazzle us. Show us your best work. Convince us you're taking college coursework and not huffing paint.
The Toppins will certainly live. When you call an obese person "fat", unsolicited and for no reason other than to denigrate them, they will live too. They probably have a much thicker skin than you as hecklers ALWAYS have the thinnest shells. But that's a horrible excuse for doing it, doesn't mean they enjoy hearing it, and it certainly doesn't mean you're a better person for pointing it out.
Like I said, being clever, witty, and a mensch is not mutually exclusive.

Excerpt
But her focus sharpened and her protectiveness took over when she heard the chants, which were repeated a couple more times throughout the game:“I didn’t really like the band yelling, but they do what they do,” she shrugged. “But that’s when I had to get up and do my own yelling. That’s when I got up and started screaming:“’Obi’s older!…Obi’s older!…Obi’s older!’”
