Very well stated, M21. Between his sophomore and senior years, Devon Oliver grew immensely. I think we have seen superb growth in X Williams over the last year, despite his struggles against WSU. I also think that playing behind Scoochie put a lot of pressure on John Crosby to "play like Scoochie." I think their styles are different. I am hopeful John improves dramatically over the next two years. The job is there for the taking.

You should probably find a new team to follow. All four of those kids are going to play major roles next year.

This site should have the live stream of Wright's playoff game tomorrow morning (10AM central time).

If they win I am going to try and go to their game Thursday night.

Haha, fortunately I was working the NCAA tournament at the Arena that day and missed watching that game live. I think he just blocked another one of our shots!

Big Steve may have developed into an even better shot blocker than Cole Aldrich. My bet would have been an affirmative in that regard! R.I.P. Big Steve. STEVE SAYS NO signs would be numerous and it would have been a forgone conclusion that we would get revenge and defeat Kansas in the NCAA Championship game this year!

I wouldn't go there since it was a kid by the name of Tom Ostrom who famously delivered Khalid El-Amin to UConn from Minnesota. Some of that story is in this SI article: http://www.si.com/college-basketball...south-regional
You can find a bit more in the book Sole Influence if you want to google that. But El-Amin was pretty much Ostrom's ticket to a career in college hoops.

I think you can watch from any state, but those are the two states they show games from. Could be wrong on that...

I used to coach in Chaska - they are a decent team, but I didn't see this coming. Well...the video isn't working so I didn't see it at all...

Not trying to draw too many comparisons, but I will say that MW gets to the basket a lot like Scoochie. Quick first step and direct line to the basket.

McKinley Wright's CP is down ten points to a very good, well-coached Chaska team. The more I see McKinley, the more I think he will be the starting point guard next year right out of the shoot. He is going to be fun to watch.

I was just thinking the same thing. He had just completed penetration into the lane and finished in a Schoochie-like manner. He handles the ball very well and just sees the court so well.

Nice to see MW put his team on his back. Win or lose, I love his mentality. He isn't going to put this game in the hands of someone else.
It's a lot to ask of him as a Freshman to bring that on the court, but as an Junior/Senior he is going to be a guy that will keep us in games and demand the ball down the stretch.

Under a minute to go...Theo John just dribbled off his foot after MW missed in the lane. Chaska to hold for last shot. And as I type that Chaska traveled. 35 econds to go...guessing MW to take last shot.

I only saw most of the second half. Wright made most of his baskets driving to the hoop with strong finish. He was not shy of contact. Only one shot looked like he didn't take it strong. Has good form on shot and good form on FT attempts, but did miss a couple FTs. Missed a 3pt attempt that I saw, had at least 1 block and a number of rebounds. Looked like he played solid D, at least as far as HS D goes. Kid is tough and willed his team to win. He took over when Theo John went out with foul trouble, scored at least 10-12 straight points for CP.

Oh my Lord! Was that fun to watch. That was one of the most exciting endings to a game that I have ever witnessed. I feel sorry for that Chaska team, really, as they played their butts off. But McKinley Wright was terrific in the game. I cannot wait to see him in a Flyer uniform next year...and I'll be Archie cannot wait either!!!

Sorry if I offend anyone but how does what you see of Wright compare to what you saw of Staten before he became a Flyer?

There was a really smart and good looking poster who said months ago McKinley would get the keys Day 1. Glad to see a few folks hopping on that train.

lol... Basketball related I would probably say McKinley is more complete and a much better shooter... Juwan was probably a step quicker

Can't answer because I never saw Staten play in high school. I do know, after watching many of MW's games this year, that he only takes over when he has to. He is a team player and will feed the ball all day to someone who is hot/open.

IIRC, Staten was much quicker in the open court, few could match his speed, but Wright is a significantly better shooter. A couple of other plusses that I don't recall in Staten's game, wright appears to be a good communicator on the defensive end, point and telling his teammates where the ball was rotating to or screens were being set up. Finally, he appeared to be comfortable on the offensive end w/o the ball in his hand, Staten always wanted the ball, always wanted to control the offense, Wright appears fine w/ distributing and sharing the ball. It also appears that he shifts speeds a lot better than Staten did. Wright appears to change gears several times in a possession to shake off his defender.
Wright won't have the raw athleticism that Staten had, that kid was fast on fast, hopefully he has the intangibles that Staten never showed until his final season at WVU.

That's because wright made almost all their shots off the dribble. If any of his teammates could hit an open shot he would have had several assists.

Collateral damage.
I hate to dredge up those bad memories. It was an ugly year but IF there wasn't all the extra bs that came with JS (I will just use initials from now on) and he was the real deal as a freshman. I trust those that know more than me when they say Wright is as good or better.

Would love to see CP play Apple Valley in the finals (yeah I know, getting ahead of myself).
Apple Valley has a 4 star PG (Tre Jones) with offers from UCLA, Arizona, Duke, among others. He's a Junior, but would love to see MW match up with him.
His older brother is Tyus Jones (Duke, Timberwolves).
I watched Tre Jones play live against Lakeville North (just lost in the state tournament). He's the real deal.

You have to love McKinley Wright's defender, #24 on Chasta. That young man was clearly excited about the challenge of guarding McKinley for the last shot. In fact, he did his job. This was one of the best high school games I have ever watched. Both teams laid it out on the court. Watch every play for McKinley and you will see a player with a super-quick first step. He is one of those players who can get a decent shot off anytime against anyone. Priders, I can't wait until next year to watch him play.

Chaska was well coached and also played very well. They led the entire game until the last 5 minutes or so where it was either tied or CP was up by 1 or 2. They had some good shooters and moved well on the floor.

Just a heads up
Tomorrow's semis and Saturday's state championship game aren't free online anymore... I guess we gotta pay for the stream this time, which is a bummer
https://prep45.grandstadium.tv/
It is about $20 for both days together
All you gotta do is:
Click the Main Link on the front page, then click live events pass further down and you can pick your option.

Problem with all these sites is that they continue to hit your account monthly even though you pay just once, then you gotta fight to get it off. Been there done it, no more.
Still trying to get credit for the womens tournament streaming which they continue to charge monthly

Glad to see so many believers after that showing. The kid is the real deal. You cannot teach being able to see the floor like he does. The game is obviously slowed down for his vision in HS, and I hope he brings it immediately in college.

Agree. When Theo John went out, McKinley attacked the basket often and scored at least 8 consecutive points ( I thought it was more but that's what the writeup said). However, on each of those possessions, he still passed the ball to other teammates, worked his way around, before driving to the hoop. I never saw him ball hog and not look to pass first.

Plus, the guy going up for the defensive board did exactly what you should do in a situation where you can get a hand on the rebound, but not corral it: he slapped it back toward midcourt. It was sheer luck that the CP kid got it, and flung it at the hoop, and it went in.

I get concerned with magazine subscriptions that do the same. My mother -in -law game me a Visa gift card. So I took up Golf on the introductory offer of $9 for a years subscription. I used the gift card for $9 and spent the rest on something else. No way they can charge more.

I can not get too excited about MW after I have read the reviews on this thread. It is obvious that although MW signed a letter of intent to attend UD that he will renege on the letter and go Kentucky for a year before turning Pro as a lottery pick.
I am nothing but depressed.

As much as I like him (I did make a Scoochie comparison yesterday), I will be surprised if he starts out of the gate. Best case is he is starting later in the year, but even then I would keep my expectations low.
I get excited thinking about his play in years 2, 3 and 4. As he learns the system and improves his jump shot.
As much as we love Scoochie, he was not an impact player his Freshman year. He gave solid minutes off the bench but was unable to move ahead of an average A10 PG (Price averaged 6.2ppg/1.8ast per game).
I see a similar trajectory for MW. I think he plays behind an improved JC (he already averaged more assists and rebounds than Price in fewer minutes - needs to cut down TO's - I think he will).

Price was a very good PG. He was willing to pass, not chasing assists but for passing. He was a good defender on and off the ball as a freshman. He had no ego.
He wasn't flashy but there was a reason Scoochie did not take his minutes. He was solid and Archie trusted him.

Here's a transfer with UD ties. I've seen him play a few times and he's a solid player. He could excel under Archie for sure.
Marial Shayok son of former Flyer -the Sudan's Sultan of Swa- from the JOB era Makor Shayok. He was born at Miami Valley Hospital.

He was a late find and an excellent one considering we needed another G/PG late in the process...He was not a great athlete getting into the lane or a dazzler but very solid, very tough, and could hit the open shot. Just sad he had those knee issues early on..

I liked Price. Especially (as another poster noted) that we grabbed him from way off the radar late in the recruiting process. Pretty sure I remember ESPN giving him a rating of 40 (which is the lowest rating they offer). All that considered, he was a great find.
My point was that even a really good PG recruit was unable to move ahead of an average PG his Freshman season. My opinion is that JC will be an average A10 PG next year and that, like Scoochie, Wright may have trouble finding a spot in the starting lineup ahead of him.

One, we do not have any scholarships. Two, watched these guys play several time, and he is not a step up from what we have coming back, or coming in. Shayok is more a slasher, with not a great handle, and just okay outside shot. And three, especially not for one year left to play.

Need someone who can contribute from day one and not sit out a year. That is why a grad transfer would be ideal.

Just FYI, but I'm pretty sure when you see a 40 from ESPN, it just means they haven't evaluated the kid. That said, Price wasn't heavily recruited -- at least not that I recall.

That is my understanding as well - I didn't articulate that very well, but supports the idea that Archie went off the radar to find him.
I fear I am pushing this thread off topic (this isn't the 2012 Recruiting thread) - just wanted to voice my opinion (and reasoning) for having tempered expectations for MW year 1. There is recent precedent for a really promising PG to come in to the program behind a PG we all agree isn't the long term answer. Even then Archie went with the guy who knows the system.
If JC can't cut down the TO's...then we see MW earlier.

He was a really highly regarded recruit who I'd hoped Dayton could land. Never seemed to be a lot of mutual interest though, and he hasn't really lived up to the hype either. But his dad is Makor Shayock so if a spot opened up, I would take this guy but only on the condition that Makor would enlist for a halftime performance consisting of nothing but those sweet hook shots.

You are correct on both counts I think Khari had 1 other D1 offer. I'd argue that Khari was above average, when healthy, but he wasn't flashy. He was "steady" which is a good commodity in a PG. Crosby, at least to date, hasn't been anything remotely representing "steady". He's better at getting in the lane than Price was, Price was a solid free throw shooter, Crosby has been atrocious. Crosby shoots the 3 better, but Price, especially his sophomore season took a much higher representation, there was no hesitation from Price when he was open on the perimeter, Crosby hesitates.
Crosby has more upside, but one of the reasons that Scoochie didn't start over Price, IMHO, is that Archie knew what he was getting out of Price game to game. Unless Crosby learns how to be more "steady" then he doesn't hold that advantage that you would expect out of an upperclassman over Wright.
