Pre-season Coaches’ Poll

Last year this came out on Thursday before Friday’s first matches. It will be interesting to see the vote between UD and VCU.

Out a day earlier this year.

https://daytonflyers.com/news/2018/8...d-in-a-10.aspx

Top 3 teams were the same on all ballots.

1 VCU
2 Dayton
3. Saint Louis

Then its NOT unanimous for the rest of the conference. LaSalle is picked 2nd to last. I think they are going to surprise some people. They have a great Libero and a good setter. That’s a good combination to build a good season on.

Not a huge surprise. VCU brings back a great team, they have the best chance of winning again this year. Dayton returns a lot of great players from a great team, but also graduates a few of their best players. Dayton will need some unproven newcomers to contribute if they want to win the conference.

SLU and DUQ, have some strong reputations. There are reasons to believe they can continue to have success. They continue to get a lot of votes because there are no obvious teams ready to leap-frog them. With the bottom so crowded and confusing, SLU and DUQ may not need to impress to finish in 3rd/4th.

GW impressed late last year in the A-10 tournament. I see why they were picked 5th. Some good pieces return, but other questions keep them from being higher. GW does have the easiest rivalry opponent. If La Salle is finally ready to compete with Duquesne, that could give GW a chance to finish ahead of Duquesne.

My biggest issue is Rhode Island's place at 6th. I think it is very possible for both Fordham and Davidson to finish higher than Rhode Island. I even think La Salle could finish higher than Rhode Island, but is being held back by their poor reputation. Rhode Island lost all 3 OHs from last year (Lunde Fossdal, Wolfe, and Lynn Cox), lost staring middle (Gillcrist), and starting DS (Blaze). Rhode Island has the most unknowns out of every team. You can even include their coach because this is only his second year as a head coach. With 6 Freshman and 5 sophomores, Rhode Island is far from a sure thing to finish in 6th place or higher. It will be interesting to see which of their younger players get starting roles, but the Rhody Rams have a lot of work to do.

Davidson and Fordham seem like the easy choices to remove Rhody from the tournament because they clearly have some star players in Ellie Crosley(DAV) and Olivia Fairchild(FOR). La Salle has built a more well rounded rather than star driven team. With a small number of players on the court (much like basketball) I think volleyball teams with that one good player tend to have success, at least in the short term. I still think La Salle will continue to improve, I just think Fordham and Davidson are more likely to finish 6th.

Its not fair that it might come down to match-ups, but Fordham and Rhode Island have 1 match against Dayton and 1 match against VCU. So only 2 matches against the best of the conference. La Salle and Duquesne have 3 (UD,UD, and VCU), GW and GM have 3 (UD, VCU, VCU) and Davidson has 4. That fact alone may give Fordham and therefore also Rhode Island a slight edge over Davidson and to a lesser extent La Salle. Fordham/Rhode Island also play host to Davidson in the only match between them. Another reason, to like the teams from the northeast.

This is an excellent observation. I agree it will probably play into who makes the tournament.
