Relax - in archie miller i trust

Although I do not have rose colored glasses, everyone needs to stop the factually incorrect and crazy posts. Dayton lost 2 games in a row to two top 100 kenpom teams (adjusting for location), there was a 10% chance for this to happen and it did. Remember everyone panicking with the back-to-back losses to St. Mary's and Nebraska earlier in the year.

The last 4 years have been the strongest in Dayton history. Ups and downs happen, remember in January 2014 when the season was lost after the 4th consecutive loss, the heartbreaker versus St. Joe's? But Archie has built Dayton into a top 30/40 program.

Many Dayton fans are having recency bias putting too much emphasis in the last two games. Let's recap the last four years.

(1) Archie Miller has led Dayton to four straight NCAA Tourney appearances for the first time in Flyer History.
(2) Dayton is 5-3 in the last 3 NCAA appearances including an Elite 8 Run.
(3) The Senior class has won the most wins at 102 in the history of the program.
(4) The Flyers have won back-to-back A-10 Regular Season Championships.
(5) Even after the 2 losses, Dayton is ranked #37 in kenpom which is better than #59 in 2016, #42 in 2015, and #42 in 2014.
(6) Dayton has won 9 of the last 11 games including a 4-2 road/neutral record!
(7) Dayton fans no longer dream of getting a win in the NCAA Tourney (like we did in 2014), everyone is discussing how to get the right seed to have a solid path to making it to the 2nd weekend and Sweet 16. Making the NCAA is no longer a good year, the team must advance in the NCAAs for a successful season.

Wow how expectations have changed from March 2014 to March 2017. Give Archie and the team 5-6 days rest and time to prepare for the game and I have no doubt the team will come out strong.

A couple different bounces or shots the last two games and the Flyers are 26-5 headed to the A-10 Semifinal with a 11 game winning streak and the forum would be ready to coronate Archie. Yes the defense is struggling, but if I could pick anyone in the nation to turn up the defense for the NCAA, it would be Archie.

Yes Dayton has faults and yes they have not played great recently. But the last 4 years have been the most successful in the last 50 years so let's not be too hard on one of the top 20 coaches in the nation and 18-22 year old kids.

In Archie Miller I trust!

There is no doubt that Archie has elevated our program since he has been here. However, losing two in a row right before heading to the big show is a little more disconcerting than losing two in a row in November.

My big concern is our recent pattern of getting down big early. We do that in the NCAA's and we are toast. I am hopeful they come out with fire in their belly on Thursday or Friday and play like we know they are capable of.

I agree that what Archie and this team have done is remarkable. But I'm not sure that means people can't criticize and be concerned with alarming trends like losing the last two games in similar fashion (as well as a few other games that we have won recently despite large first half deficits) and having less than stellar finishes to seasons the last two years.

We've grown to expect better game plans from Archie. He's picking a bad time to let the team and fans down. If he does the same level of planning for the next game that he did for these last 2, the outcome is predictable.

You made some very good points in the post, but the comment above is very selective. Take the other view . . . what if Lewis hits the wide open three at the end of the VCU game? Or X misses the three at Rhody? We are on the bubble and might very well be out.

What if Vee's shot doesn't drop; or Craft's does? Then Archie has one NCAA tourney win outside of the UD Arena. Same # as BG.

I do feel the strength of this team is their ability to play winning basketball in the last four minutes. And over the course of the year, you make your own breaks. "If if's and buts were candy and nuts, everyday would be Christmas."

So hope they figure out the first half issues, keep it close and then we take our chances in the last four minutes.

Last year we melted down at the end of the year. Seems we are heading that way again.

We have had several big comebacks and we can't count on them all the time. Something needs to be changed to increase our intensity from the beginning. Seems our offense spends too much time standing around with limited back cuts. Our weave looks like a high school drill. Time to see Archie coach us out of this.

I Agree

Archie is the best coach in UD's history. That being said how does he deal with his 2 game losing streak going into the NCAA? I believe some minor tweaks are in order. UD's "D" needs a jump start in the first half. How about applying full court ball pressure after made baskets?
Call off the press if their half court "D" is playing well to save Scoochie's legs. KP and JC had their worst combined effort against Davidson. Give Sam some minutes and use his fouls and hope for some rebounds and treys. JC cannot jump since his injury and KP is showing signs of hitting the wall after playing so many minutes this year returning from an off season of injury.
Let's hope DD is able to go and if so start him ahead of KD. Let KD bring his defensive energy off the bench and allow the better scorer to start in the NCAA.
Whatever happens go Flyers! In Archie We Trust. The seniors deserve to go out on a good note.

I see nothing wrong with your ideas and like them, but Archie isn't going to press to start a game. In 6 years he hasn't done it and he's not changing in the first game of the NCAA tournament. It's hard enough to get him to press with more than two minutes to go in the game and down 9 or 10 points.

If Darrell is healthy and able to practice I could actually see Archie starting him. I think the switch to Kyle starting since the VCU game has messed up the substitution pattern Archie was using. They got away with it at home against VCU, but the player combos have been changed from the 9 game winning streak and it just hasn't clicked.

Archie explained his philosophy about pressing this week. He said if used too much, you lose the element of surprise. He feels that turning it on too early, takes away a tool that might be needed earlier. He feels that is you show it too much, other teams will figure it out. he also said you face risks with the press, such as fouls and giving up easy baskets. This team was not deep enough this year to risk fouls. Whenever Scoochie was in foul trouble, the team hurt. Charles foul trouble hurt a lot yesterday.

Makes sense to me.

Something bothers me with this. If we're not deep enough, with 11 scholarship players, when will we ever be deep enough? If you're down 16 in the 2nd half, taking the chance to press early would seem to have as much chance of success as slowly trying to whittle the lead down and winning in the final seconds.

If you press and chop a deficit down earlier, you might have just thrown your opponent's psyche off enough to finish the game at a slower pace.

So is the problem we only have 5 real guards? If that's the case, don't expect to see a press anytime soon in the next few years because by my count, next year we will only have 4.
