NCAA tribute 50 years ago Pic Of Dayton
Not only is Dayton celebrating the 50th year of the final four but so is the NCAA with a picture of Lew and Don May of Dayton.

Fun story. Donoher, as always, exudes class and humility in his quotes. So does Jabar, and his tribute to the late Dan Obrovac is truly touching. I only wish they'd mentioned how close Dayton came to ending their string of seven straight NCAA titles by way of the triple OT loss in the '74 tourney. Instead, NC State got that honor. Always thought it would have been cool to own the distinction of being the losing team that started their run and then the winning team that ended it. Oh well.

Speaking of "O" (Obrovac) - He graduated in '69 as did I, and we carried the same major. We therefore shared many classes together and also some study nights - and a few party nights as well. All around good guy who passed away far too young. He did mention one time that he and Alcindor/Jabbar did cross paths in an airport at least once after that 1967 championship game. That Lew sent "O" that autographed pic is not surprising. It is an iconic picture in Flyer lore.

Hoops trivia question - Can you name the referee in this iconic Flyer pic? Hint - He was kind of the Teddy Valentine referee of his era.

I hope we get UCLA at some point in the dance this year. It would be fitting. I was disappointed when we didn't play Syracuse in Maui 3 years ago and then thought how great it was that we didn't after we beat them in the Dance 4 months later. Maybe the same fate awaits us with the Bruins?
Great article, but I'm confused now. Back in the late 70s or early 80s, an acquaintance and I would argue back and forth about who outjumped Alcindor. I said Obravac and he said Sadlier. This came up many times. So we made a small bet on it. Remember we didn't have the internet back then so no real way of proving it quickly. So I was looking to switch auto insurance companies and ran across Obravac in the yellow pages(remember those?). I thought, perfect, I can meet one of my former Flyers, get insurance and also get this settled once and for all. So I go in, sign on the dotted line and then ask him. He pointed straight at the photo he had on a mantle in his office. I said "Thank you, a person I know insisted it was Sadlier." Obravac then says "Sadlier did it too later in the game".
The article says Obravac is the only one to ever out jump him in college. Which is it?

Smitty, the article refers to opening tips not jump balls in general.

Is it just me, or is that ball really, really, REALLY high? I don't sit courtside but it doesn't seem like jump balls are this high these days.

Two thoughts:
1) Hard to believe it's been nearly 7 years since we lost Dan-O.
2) Kareem, for all of his passion in the area of social justice issues, conducts himself with such class and dignity. Today's so-called leaders (in many realms of society) would do well to observe, take note, and emulate this man.

Does appear to be very high. But, I'm sure that they are that high today, I mean what's the point if you're not going to toss it higher than they can jump?

In all fairness, it just says "tips" not opening tips. Can anyone else confirm from memory that Dan Sadlier did it too?

Since you are getting so technical, jump balls throughout a game were not referred to as "tips." They were called jump balls. The opening tip is referred to as the "tip."

Okay, if you say so. I always thought both were a description of the cause of the tip. What was the "tip" or the "jump ball" called to start the 2nd half?
And since you have a memory from back then, do you have an answer to my main question? Did Dan Sadlier win a jump ball or tip against Alcindor? Whether it was a tie-up or to start a half, I don't see how it's any less an accomplishment(more so since he was only 6'6) than Obrovac doing the same.

Part of the reason it looks so high is because the referee - Lenny Wirtz - was only 5' 4".

I have trouble remembering what I had for dinner yesterday but I do remember that Sadler did win a jump ball vs. Big Lou.

So John C, how come in 50 years, that's gotten absolutely no press while Obrovac's has? I mean, like I said, isn't Sadlier doing it just as noteworthy, actually more so, since he was 4 inches shorter than Obrovac and at least 8 inches shorter than Lou?

Now that's an impressive response. Please tell me that you knew that and didn't spend hours researching it?

On March 4th I made this wish in relation to an appropriate 50th anniversary celebration. So the fact UCLA would be our sweet 16 opponent tells me that my wish is being granted. So relax everyone, Wichita State and Kentucky are going down.

That was Lenny?! I used to love "giving it" to Lenny when I was in the Pep Band as a student, when he'd do games at the Arena. I always kept it clean with him, saying things like, "Oh, come on, Lenny! You know that was a travel!" And he'd just pop his whistle into his mouth, smile, and shrug. A true, old pro.
