Southern Indiana Exhibition Game
Folks,
Here's a quick primer before the Southern Indiana University game. This is an exhibition game and does not count on our season record. So, our goal must be to: a) not get anyone hurt and b) get rid of the nerves.
This team is a Division 2 team not a Division 1 team. They play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The coaches for this league have voted the Southern Indiana team in a pre-season pole as finishing 5th in the east division of their league. They have a 6'10" guy painfully thin at 200 pounds, 2 - 6'8" guys and 1 - 6'7" guy. The heaviest guy is at 230 pounds. They received two recent transfers from other programs. Looking at their schedule, this Dayton game appears to be the marque event on their non-conference schedule. If any of these kids have a chip on their shoulder that the division 1 schools passed on them and didn't recruit them; this is their only shot this year to show people that they made a mistake in their recruiting.
Their nickname is the "Screaming Eagles". I don't remember ever seeing another team that has an adjective in front of their nickname. We play other bird related nicknamed teams like - Hawks (St. Joseph), RedHawks (Miami) and Falcons (Bowling Green). But, they are not the "screaming RedHawks" or the "screaming Falcons". How does the "screaming Flyers" or the "screaming Buckeyes" sound? If we were to have a nickname in front of our "Flyers", what would it be? Maybe that's what we need to spice up our new "D" logo and our new "D" logo uniforms?

Well I'm not sure how many of these team's UD has played, but I know they've played a few:
Marquette Golden Warriors (Golden Eagles)
Tulane Green Wave
Southern Miss Golden Eagles
Alabama Crimson Tide
Duke Blue Devils
Louisianna Ragin Cajuns
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
California Golden Bears
Texas Tech Red Raiders
TCU Horned Frogs
Saint John's Red Storm
Miami Red Hawks
UNLV Runnin' Rebels
Minnesota Golden Gophers
Marshall Thundering Herd
DePaul Blue Demons
Dennison Big Red (Being local, perhaps once upon a time?)
I suppose you could argue with me on some of them, is Horned in Horned Frog part of a type of frog, or is Horned an adjective, but I don't think anyone could argue that Blue is definitely an adjective when trying to describe what kind of demon Duke and DePaul are. Redhawks would be another one I'm not sure of, but as you can see, there are lots of teams that use adjectives in front of their nicknames, quite a few that UD has definitely played in my lifetime.

Did a little research to find out why they are called the Screaming Eagles ( the only Screaming Eagles I had heard of was the 101st Airborne). I never found an answer, but I did find the name of their mascot, Archibald T Eagle. They call him Archie!!

I know this isn't a basketball opponent, but our Football Flyers played the Wilmington Fighting Quakers years ago, and I thought that 2-part nickname just made for a hilarious oxymoron. Isn't "Fighting Quakers" the equivalent of "Violent Pacifists"? Just wondering...

USI is 0-14 in exhibition games vs. D1 opponents since 2003, 16-16 since 1990.
Picked to finish 5th in the East Division of their conference, the GLVC, this year.

That was quite the jam by Pollard going down the lane on two defenders. Howard Cosell Jr about peed his pants describing it.

Without even trying to guess as to why he was suspended, this seems to be an ongoing saga of "Stupid is as stupid does." You'd think that, by now, he'd be able to do a better job of keeping his "feces aggregated".

I'd bet this is his punishment for the summer stuff. I don't think there has been anything new with Scott. Everyone I talk to seems to be very pleased with his growth. Archie has singled him out as a vocal leader on more than one occasion recently. Bucky made some positive comments about him in the pregame. If I'm not mistaken, he was actually suspended for the preseason games last year too. But I'm almost sure this was related to the April incident and not anything new.
