Bad first halves at home????
We've had some really dreadful first halves at the Arena lately. Three top of mind: Duquesne, VCU, and tonight against Rhody. Maybe others?
Trying to figure out why this keeps happening:
1. Are we overconfident? Can't see this as the answer as we have ZERO high quality wins this year. Plus we have multiple losses at home now so not as if we are unbeatable in the Arena.
2. Not (mentally) prepared? That's on the players as much as the coach.
3. Too tentative? Too worried about fouling due to short bench in the first half. After falling behind at half we come out with an "F*** it and the fouls, let's leave it all the court" attitude.
Very strange. Especially since "tired" shouldn't come in to play in the first half.

I vote for #2. I usually see a trend in no motion offense, or ball handling, relaxed defense and other signs that the team is simply not in the right mindset.

I guess this justifies my question . . . Coach Grant doesn't seem to have the answer either:
“We’ve got to get past this one,” Grant said. “Right now it hurts. It stings. You’ve got to be able to take care of your home court, and we’ve struggled to do that this year. We’ve struggled to have the focus and understand we can’t take anything for granted at any point. We’re not that team. We’ve made it harder than it needs to be, for whatever reason.”
AND JUST TO BE CLEAR, I'M NOT CRITICIZING COACH GRANT HERE. Just making the point that this coming out flat at home thing of late is bizarre and very difficult to understand.
In the last 30 days at home:
Duquesne: -8 first half; +12 in second half
VCU: -12 first half; +11 in second half
Rhody: -7 first half; +7 in second half (b4 OT)
Haven't had that breakfast and cup of coffee that Rollo recommended (and will be reimbursing?) for everyone this morning, so did not dig in to see if there is any pattern to individual player performance by half.

This is concerning. The coach and his staff are the people responsible to find the reason and make changes.

What changes do you want to make? There are a total of three players on the bench. I guess coach could threaten Josh with starting Frankie in his place! This team is what it is. They sometimes play like they are not being challenged for their spot. Because they aren't! Next years full roster will take care of of that.

there have been plenty of flyer teams that have had that issue. The problem is we put 13,000 in the stands and some of these teams that come in don't get to play in front of that in three or four games combined so they are energized. We have to meet that energy early on and it's tough with young guys.

I agree and it has nothing to do with lacking heart or not trying but it is human nature when you are not challenged sometimes you are subconsciously not realizing it. Players need competition and they need fear.

One thought on a change for the starting lineup is possibly starting Trey instead of Jordan. I know Trey hasn't been playing well and the starting line wouldn't have your traditional 1-5 but perhaps we have less slow starts because one thing Trey usually does do is bring energy. This would also give us a little offensive uptick with the first substitution (at least on nights Jordan is scoring). Right now at the first substitution with Trey and Dwayne we get better defensively but lose a lot of offense. Just a thought to figure out how to get us going better in the first half.

I think it’s pretty obvious that we are average at the guard position this year. We just don’t have any depth. Next years team and minutes will be completely different.
