Predictions: Starters and Minutes 2017-18
Starters:
John Crosby
Darrell Davis
Matej Svoboda
Xeyrius Williams
Josh Cunningham
Minutes:
Crosby 25
Crutcher 15
DDavis 25
Trey Landers 15
Svoboda 25
JDavis 15
XWilliams 25
Antetokounmpo 15
Cunningham 25
JPierce 15
I don't have any real insight here. But we have 4 players returning who played significant minutes. Presumably, they start. 5 newcomers plus Trey Landers, who didn't see the court a lot last year. For the 5th starting slot, I'd guess Svoboda based on his years of experience. With only 10 scholarship players, I don't see anyone that I would expect to sit the bench most of the year, so 25/15 split for starter/backup seems as good as guess as any.

I sure hope that Kostas gets more than 15 minutes a game. We need him to be the real deal.

Nice job. I think Pierce will be a work in progress. He'll get 7-8 / game. Look for XW and Josh to be pushing 28-30.

I'd like to see at least a few of these guys who are projected to get major minutes at least dribble a basketball in a Flyer uniform before making any predictions.

I could not remember who the 13th player was...Sam Miller, Obadiah Toppin, and Ryan Mikesell.

Davis, Williams and Cunningham better be over 30 mpg or this team is going to royally suck.

Kostas being able to play SF spot (Cunningham, Williams, and Kostas in the front court) would be huge for us. It keeps our better players on the floor and reduces dependency on Landers and some of the unknown freshman talents playing major minutes. I hope that is the case:
Cunningham (26), Williams (8), Pierce (6)
Williams (21), Kostas (19)
Svoboda (25), Kostas (6), D Davis (5), Landers (4)
D Davis (20), J Davis (17), Landers (3)
Crosby (25), Crutcher (11), Pick a Davis (4)

I am not discounting Landers and hope he makes a strong contribution to the team's success. I am surprised so many of you are discounting him. The young man has had success in high school. He may have some head issues, but he now has a new coach, a new younger team and we will all be better off if we encourage him and he blossoms. Certainly referencing him in a negative manner without really ever seeing him much in game situations won't help him.

Who is referencing him in a negative manner? Predictions based off of what we have seen isn't referencing somebody in a bad manner, its just making an educated guess.

Yes - going off what we saw last year (and I know he was battling hernia pain). But also going off of Grant's comment that he will have to find his niche on this team. I saw some good flashes last year, but at this point I am guessing Landers is bench player.

The "bench player" label in this Flyer scenario is not being critical. We have 5 starters and the rest are technically bench players. But we have some of our young players who have to step up and earn "starter minutes" as a player off the bench, or we will suck.
The mystery is which ones will it be?

Wouldn't those 3 playing less minutes a game be an indicator that the others are better than expected?

The post seems to imply that he would read the comments and maybe get down on himself.
First of all I hope the players that read this board, (I am sure there are some), realize that 99% of us are middle aged (if I am being kind), "never were" guys and consider whatever is posted on here with that filter. After all, this topic in particular is nothing more than the bored musings and guesses of fans who just want the season to start.
Secondly, from what I saw of Landers last year I would think he is the exact opposite of some snowflake that would read this board and think "woe is me." I saw a hard nosed kid who couldn't wait to compete against anyone in front of him. I am excited for him to play a bigger role this year and I hope he does.

Better if we're winning by 39.
Worse if we're losing by 30.
Better if we're winning by 3
Worse if we're losing by 3.
Better if they aren't in foul trouble.
Worse if they are in foul trouble.
Guaranteed better if King Rollo is reffing the games!

If we discount freshmen (Piece and JDavis) and Trey Landers due to last year's limited PT, that means more minutes for everyone else. Crutcher as a freshman pretty much has to get significant minutes as the backup PG.
Crosby 25
Crutcher 15
DDavis 28
Landers 8
Svoboda 25
JDavis 8
XWilliams 29
Kostas 25
Cunningham 29
Pierce 8
Kostas and Svoboda both have more years than the other newcomers - I'd expect them to get more PT based on that.

Im most interested why everyone is operating under the assumption Crosby starts. Maybe at the first game, but if he starts off like last year gotta go to Crutcher

So many questions. I can even see D Davis starting at PG. Although with two true PG in Crosby and Crutcher I'm leaning towards those two getting the nod. Crosby has got to be the front runner being a Junior with experience. I hope Crutcher is good, but I don't think he comes in with expectations to be starting PG.

I would love to see some scenarios where we go PG +Svoboda, Kostas , JC and X. If DD plays point in that scenario, that may be our best defensive team and creates most mismatches on offense. Really boils down to how good of an on ball defender Svoboda is and if he is quick enough to guard other teams 2.
Defense is going to be the real key. Wait until we play a team like SBU with a loaded back court. We will put DD on Adams...and who on Mobley? He may score 40 with Crosby on him.

C'mon guys. DD starting at point?? He showed no more composure than Crosby. Crosby a poor defensive player? He has great speed and plays average or better D. Maybe Landers will play point?

I predict it initially will be Crosby at point, but his Assist/TO ratio is abysmal at 1.2. The Staff can coach that number a bit, but it probably won't match DD's 1.6. Both men have their strengths and weaknesses, but I just think it's Crosby to start and Jalen apprenticing because DD at point looks like deer staring into headlights.

When thinking about matching up with the other team, Dayton actually has some good flexibility
(not really concerned with minutes, as each game will dictate the minutes differently)...
Need to shut down a big team :
Darrell Davis
Kostas Antetokounmpo
Xeryius Williams
Josh Cunningham
Jordan Pierce
Need to shut down a small-ball lineup:
John Crosby
Darrell Davis
Trey Landers
Xeryius Williams
Josh Cunningham
Need offense against a big defensive team:
Darrell Davis
Trey Landers
Kostas Antetokounmpo
Xeryius Williams
Josh Cunningham
Need offensive lineup w/3pt shooters:
Jalen Crutcher
Jordan Davis
Matej Svoboda
Xeryius Williams
Kostas Antetokounmpo
Lots of possibilities for Grant and staff...
