Shayok was the best player on the floor in their opening round game vs. UNCW. Sadly, I don't think he ever really gave us a look in the beginning, and I don't see him starting now.
Plus, we got that whole "we don't have any spots open" thing.

Hey, what can I say? Matthew Atewe went to my HS and I was driving by while on a trip back home and stopped by. He graciously agreed to talk.

Also, 3rd leading scorer Noah Dickerson (Atlanta, GA) is leaving UW - Mike Hopkins is inheriting a train wreck.

Here is the current list of players who have announced that they are transferring in. A few interesting players on the list. Dickerson would make sense if we have a scholarship open up.

Archie is going to have to Cripe somebody so I can get more excited about the transfer market. Not having any open scholarships makes it a whole lot less interesting.

Nice player but does not fit a true need for us, has averaged about 12 points and 5 rebounds a game for the last three years. Give me an experienced point guard or somebody in the mold of Mo Allie Cox or Hassan Martin.

CP down 21-18 with about 6 to go in the first half. Wright has 4 points. Missed a couple pull up jumpers in the lane. He has had some really nice passes that should have been assists. Added a couple of steals.
CP is looking to feature Marquette commit Theo John more today. He is a mismatch for the other team.

CP down 34-31 at half.
I think MW has 8 points to go with a few of everything else (rebounds, assists, steals).
It's clear he works hard. Had a sequence where he blocked a shot...followed immediately by a steal and drew a foul on his way to the basket. Missed the front end of the 1 and 1 and jumped in for his own rebound and got the put back.

CP wins 70-62. State Championship game Saturday night.
Don't have all the stats, but MW had 21 points and 8 rebounds. I know he had a few blocks. If I had to guess probably 6 steals and 7 or 8 assists.

Interesting - I thought I heard them say he had 3 blocks - that may have been John they were talking about at the time.
I will challenge the steals number. I remember 3 and a few more that he knocked away and his team grabbed the ball. I was giving credit for those.

So it will be Champlin Park vs. Apple Valley at 9 PM on Saturday Night for the State Title.
McKinley Wright vs. Tre Jones (who had a triple double tonight)... Game On!
On that website, you can pay $10 for the final game by itself.

So hypothetically a grad transfer can transfer from one A10 school to another without sitting? Or do A10 rules require any player transferring within the conference to sit a year?

Chaska coach Dana Kallman told Pioneer Press.com in reference to McKinley Wright, "I think he's going to go tear it up at Dayton."He'll start as a freshman, in my opinion."
There are many on this message board who feel that he will get the keys from day 1, myself included. I went back through all the posts on those who have weighed in and counted 10 that agree to only 4 that don't agree and a whole bunch who say the switch from JC to MW may occur sometime in the ooc. It will be a topic for debate from now until November but we'll just have to wait and see!
For now, let us all cheer for Champlin Park in their game against Apple Valley. In every interview on you tube from McKinley Wright he has stated that he and his team have been looking forward to this rematch because Apple Valley defeated them last season for the State Championship and they have been hoping for a rematch ever since!

I don't think there is an intraconference transfer rule. Clemson has a RB grad transfer that left and went to Miami (FL) this offseason... that seems to indicate there is no such rule.

My bet in all of this is you'll see some serious improvement from Crosby knowing the keys are his..It will initially be JC's job and he'll need to lose it, imo.....I think the effect Scoochie had will rub off on JC more than many think here..

So, with the way last season went for us (particularly in the losses to Northwestern, GW, et al), MW should feel right at home.

I know that conferences are free to make intraconference transfer rules and the A10 has those in place while the Big 10 has no such rules in place for example. What I don't know is whether intraconference restrictions apply to grad transfers.

There's probably a game thread on ChamplinPride.com where fans are lamenting another ridiculous start and other fans are posting after the game cracking on those fans for doubting the Rebels' ability to come back from yet another significant deficit.

The Big 10 does have those rules, but the school that is losing the player can waive the restrictions.

Can see a scenario similar to when Scoochie arrived. Khari Price began the year as the #1 PG, but eventually Smith got the quality minutes.

Agree with this, but Price was far more reliable than Crosby is AT THIS POINT. I agree with the sentiment but think the Wright move would have to happen earlier and more dramatically, unless Crosby has a significant jump.

Khari Price was solid. Never made the spectacular play. He made open shots. He didn't really create offense for himself or others, but he also didn't turn the ball over. Scooch had the higher ceiling of course, but Khari was kind of the safe choice. He played like a veteran while Scooch played a bit like a freshman.
So I do agree with what you are saying here. Crosby isn't as reliable as Price was. Now, Crosby can create offense, and can make the spectacular play so the ceiling might be higher than Price's in that sense, but for every time he creates some nice offense, it seems like he creates two turnovers. So he's got to get that under control.
So my hope is really that McKinley Wright comes in a bit like Khari did as a freshman, but with more of that Scooch-like ceiling. Crosby can come in hot and give you like 5 buckets in a row when you need a spark. He's that kind of player now. Just needs to be a little smarter with the ball out there.

Envision this scenario: Dayton is down 10. We can't buy a bucket. Off the bench comes John Crosby. Two minutes later, could we be down 20, after he's turned the ball over three times? Absolutely! And therein lies the problem. But we've all seen Crosby create offense and make shots! George Mason is an example of good Crosby. He can absolutely create 5 buckets in a row. So he is theoretically at least in my mind, a very good bench spark type of guy.
Really, it's just a matter of getting to the point that we see good Crosby a lot more often than we see bad Crosby. We're definitely not there yet, and I have no actual evidence that we'll get there. But if you are of the optimistic type, you might look to the fact that we have seen players turn the corner under Archie's watch.... And if he doesn't? Well, McKinley Wright does look pretty darn good! I really don't think he's your typical freshman.

Good article. It will be interesting to see who plays better. Scroll down and look at the picture of the writer....he looks like a sophomore in HS! I guess that will serve him well one of these days.

I hope his game is not affected by the news today. It would have to weigh on the young man's mind...not to mention the other six recruits.

I think they should have waited until tomorrow to finalize the deal. Give the kid a chance to live his dream of a state championship. There is no way that the news did not affect his game tonight.

I am guessing that if Archie had 10,000 thoughts about announcing his IU deal, how it would affect McKinley Wright's state championship game was certainly not among them.

It wouldn't surprise me if IU had told Archie, "Sign now, or we move on." Programs like that one are big business, and big business doesn't care about the little guy.

How about we let MW make that decision. Right now he has a signed LOI with UD. As of now he's a Flyer. And as long as he stays a Flyer we should treat him as such.

This thread may end being the longest thread in UD Pride history after it's all said and done.
Plenty of new recruiting will go on. Start looking at the transfer list as well.

If you think we are upset about losing Archie, what do you think these kids are going through? They had been told UD was the best place on earth and with them UD was going places. Their future was put in Archie's hands and now he isn't going to be the guy to take them to the next level. Sure they have options but it just won't be the same.

Sadly a very early introduction into the greedy world of college athletics and athletics as a whole. It probably stings now but hopefully in some weird way maybe this experience will make them stronger and more prepared to deal with other types of adversity in the future.

McKinley Wright's big game was actually the first thing I thought of when I read the news on Pride yesterday. Being able to watch several of his games this year and read all of the articles and tweets, I feel like I know him. Wish I could give him a hug.

I don't expect every one of the recruits to honor their commitments, but at least we haven't seen any "I'm outta here!" Twitter posts yet. And I know recruits come mostly for the coach, but we're still the Flyer Faithful, and we'll still pack the house almost 13,000 strong every night. And, if you and your teammates replicate the success this last group of seniors had, you'll be treated like a God every time you come near The Arena. Ask guys like Brooks Hall and Devin Oliver.

I know 18 and 19 year olds can knee jerk reaction to something like this because of emotion and feeling lied to. Yet, if these recruits parents are involved they may be able to help these young men see what kind of opportunity is ahead for them at UD.
These guys are great players who accomplished a lot in high school and are only going to get better in college. I have a faith that not only is UD the best place for them, I believe that Dayton will hire a coach to help them get to the next level. I think Archie did a great job, but how many of his players are next level ready?
I truly believe the next coach will be able to help them get there.
Kostas imho isn't going to leave. His family is smart, loyal and dedicated to seeing he gets the best education (something they really value based on what I have read) and get ready to play in the pros. Dayton opened the door when a lot of other schools did not.
If our recruits read this stuff, I want to say come to UD and know you will be treated like you did when you were recruited and even better when you step on the court. As fans we are excited to have you all as part of the Flyer family.
Go Flyers

Will lose all respect for AM if he poaches any of our recruits. As BG said when he left UD, The recruits were UD's. Now whether they stay is another matter, but if any end up a IU, shame on Archie.

I am counting 15 scholarship players for IU next year, including the 2 that have asked for releases...they are 2 over the limit...that would seem to help our cause.
http://verbalcommits.com/schools/indiana
Above link:
"If McKinley decided to reopen recruitment Indiana should be first in line...His ability to shoot the three and swiftly drive to the basket with authority screams Indiana point guard...We are all aboard recruiting McKinley Wright to Indiana and would hope head coach Archie Miller would him a top priority."

I know UD could hold the LOIs over these guys' heads and make them sit a year if they don't honor, but that's program suicide. I'm guessing the same could be said for limiting where they could go (if that's even possible) if they wanted out of their LOI.
Really no good options at this point unless Scooch can apply for another year of eligibility.

We all are concerned about what the recruits may do. We have experience with the AM hire when players we thought we desperately needed to fill holes in the team left when Archie could not convince them to stay.
I think the issue at that time centered not only on the coach they thought they would play for was gone, but AM was a new hire, with no HC experience, and to an 17-18 yr old pedigree isn't something you base your choices on. Hell, UD fans were not sure about the selection either.
Yes he came from a BB family, yes he was an assistant at OSU and Arizona, etc. but really what else did we have to go on? Faith! But kids feel they don't have enough faith to go on in their young lives when everything seems so important. So they went with the experienced HC's and left. Right decision, wrong decision?
Maybe, maybe not at the time.
So for the recruits of 2017, they are faced with the very same concern. Put their chips in with an unknown commodity or a known HC? Maybe if UD goes with one of the current assistants there is that relationship already and they feel at ease. Go with a known HC maybe they feel a little less sure but still can have their uneasiness assuaged. Go with an unknown assistant from another school and you most likely lose most of them.

They're Archie's players, man. They have no business here with him gone. Unless it's about the education. And, c'mon?

They didn't come to play for Ostrom. Archie is the one that sealed the deal. It was his team no matter who did most of the leg work. We are back to square one. I'm sure they are getting contacted by g-d only knows how many schools out there. And if they don't hire someone soon that the recruits like, you can fugheddaboutit!!!

According to his twitter page - Nahziah is in Syracuse today. Could just be for personal reasons.
However, if it's true that Griffin was the main recruiter for Nahziah...and that Griffin has talked to Syracuse about their open assistant coaching job...could be a bad sign.

Saw the tweet from his mom. Glad the call went well, but I didn't take that as a "My son is going to UD" type thing. I assumed coming out of the phone call things were still up in the air.
Saw the exchange with his friend, which is why I mentioned could be personal reasons. Could also be something else.
For what it's worth, Lavar Batts from VCU had his NLI release for days and nobody knew. Kept it very private.
Maybe I'm being a pessimist. I hope that's the case.

That's the hope, but go read what the VCU fans are saying about Batts. He had been out of his NLI for several days without fans knowing.
He announced his decommit from VCU and his commit to NCSU at the same time. Fans don't always know what's happening.
And yes....that certainly includes me.

Per the NCAA calendar, we're currently in a recruiting dead period. Coaches can't have face-to-face contact with recruits or their parents until noon on 6 April. So he's not meeting with Boeheim unless they're wearing blindfolds. Which would be weird.

Isn't there some past history with coaches and kids and blindfolds at Syracuse?

Does that include Grant? Would think if a school hired a new coach, they would be allowed to reach out, regardless of dead period.

Doesn't apply to players you already signed. Technically they are not recruits anymore and can only be contacted if they are granted a release.
