Thumbs up Talked to Dyshawn when visiting UD

For the second time in 50 years, wife and I spent some time in Dayton last weekend. It was to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. There were many highlights and no lowlights.

First, the Pine Club is better than ever. What a great time and place to socialize with some Flyer friends.

Second, the UD campus and surrounding investments are beautiful and visionary beyond words. We walked the entire campus while staying at the Marriott.

We combed the areas south of campus clear to C-ville. We had relatives on Stonemill, homes in Belmont, Kettering and Washington Township. Dayton shows very well right now. Many, many streets have been repaved and there is pride in neighborhoods in Beavercreek, Oakwood, Kettering, C-ville, and the City of Dayton itself.

Lastly, we had a great talk with Dyshawn Pierre on campus. What a great young man and representative for the U, Dayton, and UD basketball. He is "FIT". Whatever weight he has gained is just right. Whatever his role becomes, he is physically ready for it. The team has been hitting conditioning hard. Basketball camp was in progress while we talked and the kids were stoked.

Pierre's eye rolled when he described what a physical presence Steve McElvene is. He will join the workouts in a few weeks. Taking care of studies. DP shared a few other things that we'll leave for a more appropriate day, but suffice to say the team is amped and all systems are go.

Glad to see you had a good time visiting the area. You need to show up more frequently than twice in 50 years ...

Glad to have you back in Dayton. The Pine Club is still my favorite steakhouse. Give me that dark atmosphere and moderately sized and moderately priced premium steak vs. those restaurants with their mega steak meals and mega bills to match.

Much has changed on the campus and the city. Great to see your observations. There is still work to be done in both areas.

Pierre is a nice quiet young man. So are many of his teammates. There have been a number of likeable quality young men wear the uniform.

San Diego & the Mrs.

San Diego, what a great way to spend your anniversary----in your other "hometown"!

So glad you got a chance and took it to walk the campus and see one of our players and spend some time with him!

We are so lucky that Dayshawn is the typical of the kinds of kids we recruit to our "Marianist" based campus! Truely a great student-athlete!

Also glad you got back to the pine club and other favorites! Congrat's on 50----onto 60!

Oh someone could start a new thread about the positive news surrounding the logo ... Like it will probably be about 22 years before a new logo is revealed

By that time some of us will be dribbling and ranting for other reasons

Based on some of the comments on the new branding and logo, it sounds like the program is going to hell in a hand basket. I have followed this program for over 30 years now, and from my perspective, there has never been a more exciting time for Dayton Flyer basketball. I am happy for you San Diego Flyer. I am sure your conversation with Dyshawn really made your day. We have a great tradition, the Flyer Faithful, an outstanding coach, and an administration that seems committed to improving the basketball program and elevating its status across the nation. And I'm not going to say but I...

Just to clarify, did Pierre say Steve will join workouts in a few weeks, or was he referring to himself?

Congratulations SDF, glad you got a chance to see the U and the surrounding areas which has changed significantly since played golf for the U. Hope you got a chance to take in a round or two.

Met SDF down in Dallas at the SMU alum pre game gathering and intro to BG. A really nice man and great fan of the University, as evidenced with his many informative posts here in UDPride land.

Heres to many more happy days together with you and the misses.

Met a man celebrating his 60th university. He was asked what he attributed the success of their marriage to. He answered; "I tell my wife the same three words each and every day". Ah yes the man said, "I Love you" would do it". No the man replied, "I just say....you're right dear".

Can't argue with those words....eliminates spats.

I recall a Pine Club kitchen fire during my junior year ('91). The Ghetto never smelled so good.

Way to go SDF - 50 years - that's wonderful. You've got 10 years on my wife and me. First date - Pine Club, then the 2nd half of the UD-Loyola of the South game at the Arena in Jan. of '71 - Cross hit for over 40 in that game.

But I didn't see a reference to Kramer's in your report . . . obviously the trip was not a total success!!!

Best and thanks. Sounds like the ideal visit.

Marriage....some rules

I too have been married for 50 years...and when asked if it's difficult to eb married for 50 years the answer that always popss into my mind is this:

Being married for 50 years is not at all difficult. What is difficult is being married to the same person for 50 years.

Along similar lines, a day or so ago a friend sent me a few "rules" for a happy life as carved on a guy's gravestone. They went something like this:

1. Your woman has got to be a good friend, a person you can talk to.

2. She has got to be someone with whom you can share a good laugh.

3. Your gal must be a person that is able to overlook and live with your faults.

4. And, of course, she has got to be good in bed.

5. Finally, it's very important that these four women never meet.

Wink Rollo, you are so full of caca.

You have been dancing in and out of people's heads for a long time. I know I will lose favor with a lot of posters by saying I giggle at all the BS you throw out on the table.

While eating dinner at the Pine Club, I mentioned if there was one nutcase poster I would like to meet while in town, it would be Rollo. My dinner mates would recall me saying that.

Now I have to tell you why Mrs. SDF is so absolutely deserving of the Honor. In 2004 we moved from San Diego (we had retired there in 1998 at age 55) to help our son with a crumbling marriage and two grandchildren ages 3 and 5. Little did we anticipate the extent of the parents demise, both physically and emotionally. We either raise them or they go to Social Services.

So for the last 10 years we have raised these two kids 24/7, virtually alone. We could no longer be grandparents where you get to spoil them and give them back. We became mentors, teachers, coaches, and spiritual guides with little or no help. It consummed an entire decade of our '60's. She gave up an active tennis game. She has been on that hamster wheel for 10 years. We put them in every sport as I took charge of the boy, and she took charge of the older girl. We have been to hundreds and hundreds of football, softball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, basketball games and practices. So many that we rarely could attend the games/matches together. Mrs SDF became a full time mom again, cooking, shopping, cleaning, laundry from all those sports, and facilitating school activities.

But as all you older posters know, we simply do not have the energy after 60 that we had in our 30's while you were raising your first batch of children. And although we are type A individuals, no amount of planning can infuse the juice to continually arise at 5:30am for a 14 hour day of parenting.

So since they are now 13 and 15, we figure we are all in for at least another 10 years. Then as we approached our trip to Dayton, a miracle happened. The kids mother had been quietly reinventing herself from a forgettable period of her life and is in position to responsibly take the kids, and they are excited to make it work. Our son is on board with visitation. And we get a "Get Out of Jail Free Card." Totally unexpected.

I'll share with you there are not enough awards in the world to bestow upon Mrs SDF for what she shouldered the past 10 years. Your award couldn't have come at a better time.
God gave us early retirement, recources, and good health, and said this is your job until I decide otherwise, don't screw it up.

She still can't sleep past 5:30a. I think her Yukon automatically goes to Krogers and schools like it's on autopilot.

Your timing was impeccable Rollo. We laughed outloud when we read your post. And then looked at each other and the tears rolled.

Llife is good. God is good.

A simple PM and 3-hour notice would have sufficed...Pine Club is the only place Mrs Rollo will go on a moment's notice...and you never know...the King may have picked up the tab!

Congrats to you and the Sir Mrs! God knows we need more people like you two.

Keep up the brown-nosing and you, too, may get a seat at the Royal Roundtable!

SDF, may God bless you and yours for the service you've provided directly to those children. And may I also Thank you as a citizen because indirectly you've provided a service to us all. Good luck to you both going forward.

Congratulation SD on your 50th. I also met you and Avid at the function before the SMU game. Has that been almost ten years? Your posts have meant much more to me as I know who you guys are.

Your story was very heartwarming and tells a lot about who you are. But we all knew that before your post.

Congratulations also to my wife as we celebrated our 50th in January. She is a UK wildcat, but she has been tamed and roots for the Flyers.

Congratulations on you and Mrs. SDF 50 years of marriage! My wife and I will be celebrating our 42nd anniversary on August 26th.

Always enjoy reading your posts. Keep it up! They are very entertaining. A 1968 alum, I followed the Flyers to Freedom Hall in Louisville to the Final Four in 1967. In the semi-finals, against North Carolina, my tickets were in the middle of the Tarheels cheering section and when Don May made his first 13 shots in a row without a miss the guy behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said, "****, doesn't that guy ever miss"? I just laughed!

My 30 year old son and I attended the elite 8 in Memphis this past season and had a blast.

May God bless you and your family in all of your future endeavors.

When my parents were married 50 years I asked my Dad "Pop, 50 years married to the same woman. How'd you do it"? I really didn't expect an answer since I was just joking with him. But he looked at me, pondered the question for about 5 seconds and responded "There's a lot you don't hear." Best advise he ever gave me!

SDF - Congratulations to your wife and you on 50 years and stepping up to the plate and doing the difficult things that life sometimes throws at us and doing them so well and done with such love. What will make this circle complete is in a few years when your grandchildren attend UD and invite you for a basketball home game and then to attend their graduations. Maybe we all come too!!!

Thanks much. We haven't made them all, but we managed to get to Memphis, Tucson, Vegas, Malibu, and the regional in Iowa City against Ky. Plan to get to Fayettville and our regional games NEXT SPRING!!

By the way, we got into our old C-ville HS on Virginia street. Lots of memories on that court.
Wife and I were both captains and point guards the years we were Elks. She still holds it against me that we boys kicked the girls out of the gym at practice time. Title Nine wasn't even imagined back then. lol. It took our grandson to age 13 before he could beat either of us at horse. Washington Twp was our hood. Used to road race to Cassano's after b-ball games to woof down a large pizza!!

Congratulations to SDF and his wife on 50 years. I'm just past 7 years, and 50 is hard to visualize and look up to. Truly amazing!

There are 3-4 posters every year, and some over time, that put up not just insightful basketball posts but also life experience, life lessons and other insights on this Board. Truly proud and grateful for UD Pride.

On a side note, and I may be "violating" an unspoken oath/understanding (but I don't care) - SDF spotted me 1 year of Pride Plus membership soon after I started out on here. This is the wonderful, UD PRIDE/Univ of Dayton type of person he is. And there are I'm sure several more out there, doing good things for people out of their own goodness.

Looking forward to meeting you one day SDF. When you come up to NY some day, please PM me prior to coming. And do enjoy many more years of retirement and love!
