Mikesell

With all the excitement/trepidation (glass half full/half empty perspective) surrounding the large turnover in personnel, it's odd to consider that Ryan Mikesell is the only remaining player to have played in two NCAA tournament games for our Flyers. (Josh C. was a redshirt in Mikesell's FR season)

While I think Cunningham and Landers deserve to be the captains next year, Ryan plays an important role for this team as the bridge to past success. I've heard that Ryan is playing well in practice. Depending on who comes in (namely a grad transfer), Ryan may not start but I think he'll be a huge factor in the teams resurgence next year. I'm excited to see the new and improved version!

He's shown flashes in the past of being a good player. Hopefully he can serve as some upperclassman leadership for the newcomers

Given the problems the team had last year, unless RM is less than 95%, I would be very surprised if he doesn’t start. He was the smartest guy on the court most the time as a freshman and I assume ‘all in’ from what all I’ve heard and seen of him.

Im not sure he will be in top 5 of overall talent next year (I think he’ll surprise a lot of people) but he’s the kind of guy AG wants and believe will be reflected in how he is used.

I didn't buy into this originally, but the tail end of your post tells me why it would be in our best interests

I don't know who will start, but I think it's more important who finishes. Anthony has not had a year Watching what Ryan mikesell can do. So I think it comes down to who shows the most in preseason practices. And I don't think there's room for both Ryan and Toppin to start. But I believe there will be equal distribution in minutes of playing time .

I think the fact that on paper there appears to be an opening spot in the starting line up is a great thing. Mikesell is a redshirt junior and I'm sure thinks he should start and is gonna work to try and earn the spot. I don't think Matos, Cohill & whoever else we sign aren't coming here to ride the bench. The competition for playing time hopefully brings out the best in these guys.

I like Ryan and appreciate what he brings as a player, but if he is one of the five best players on the roster next year I’ll be disappointed.

He could start at the beginning of the season because of his experience and still not be one of the best five players on the roster. It may take the new players awhile to get up to speed on what AG wants to do, even if they have more raw talent.

Anthony has both and opportunity and challenge this season because he is going to have as many as eight or nine players that could be the squad that stirs the drink. As was implied earlier, the best five on the floor might not be the best five players. He's got pieces to work with this season and the focus is going to be on Anthony Grant the season.

Anthony proved this past year that attitude and effort mean a whole lot to him (comparing PT for Svoboda & Williams). Without those 2 attributes, “talent” means nothing. Mikesell has always seemed to have a good attitude and a good work ethic. That, combined with the skills he has, should ensure him a decent amount of PT next season.

If his defense doesn't improve we may see a lot more of that zone.

From reading the DDN articles on him he's been hampered on D by his hip. Healthy, I'd think he'd be better than what he showed before

He could bring some more rebounding too which was an area that was lacking last year

We can not know who the five will be now but my take is that if Toppin is all that he is reported to be and Miksell is healthy then the best balanced team on the court next year would be.
Toppin, Cunningham, and Mikesell in the front court and Cohill and Crutcher in the back court.

Mikesell showed us very little defense in two years. We all hope it was due to his injury, but who knows until he gets out there.

He was a very inconsistent shooter, but you would think with his immobility this year, he has spent a lot of time at the free throw line and three point line.

Lots of guessing and hoping at this point. Personally, I hope Anthony brings in a few guys that bury Mikesell on the bench, then we will be very good.

He hand a splint on a finger / hand at one point. Let's hope for two healthy years.

Wouldn’t mind at all if the starting 5 included Cunningham, Mikesell, and Landers up front. A little undersized, but with the exception of Big Steve, we’ve been undersized up front for 4 years now, so what’s new?

Huh? He would start in front of Toppin and Matos. Which he will. Starting 5 will be:

Crutcher
Davis
Landers
Mikesell
Cunningham

We have got to get to the point that Cunningham is not our center. If we can have someone else in the middle, Cunningham will be much more effective. Mikesell will play significant minutes if he is capable on the defensive side of the court. He adds quite a bit on the offensive side that does not show up in the box score. The real question for me is if we will play with an attacking defense. Will we press? Will Grant be able to get the right players to successfully accomplish that.

Amen, Amen. Cunningham is a great power forward, and a mediocre center. He is awesome when he gets the ball, but is not great posting up. His defense against other bigs, and his help side, leave a lot to be desired.

I agree completely that we need Cunningham playing power forward instead of center. That’s why the recruiting threads are so frustrating. It seems like 90% of the reports are on guys who are 6’5” or shorter. We need some guys who are 6’8”-6’10”. I mean, if Loyola of Chicago can get a 6’9” 240 pound freshman who can play right away, why can’t we?

I'm with T-Bone. It seems all the recruiting threads start the same way: Player A from School B is transferring 15/3/3 guy. Will be a good get. 6'2" 185. Eligible Immediately/Sit one play one or two.

It seems there are 20 guards for every one PF/C

big guys are hard to find and the ones that are out there hot commodities. Just about every school in D1 is looking for one.

Small pool of good bigs in the high school, juco and transfer ranks makes it a sellers market this time of year

It took them a lot of work to get Krutwig to play as a freshman.

Jacobs graduate Cameron Krutwig knew he had to make one major change in order to be a Division I men's college basketball player.

"I had to drop 30 pounds to play at the speed and pace of the game," said Krutwig,

"It happened over the summer and into the fall. I lost 30 pounds from May to October," he said. "I've been working for three or fourth months at it. The training staff at Loyola has been great in helping me out with watching what I eat and with activity. I changed my diet.
http://basketball.dailyherald.com/sp...cess-at-loyola

He was a chubby, tall kid from suburban Chicago with mid & low major offers. Loyola projected what his ability could be, took a kid who was willing to work and remade his body over the course of a summer and fall. A new slimmer body and they coached him up on playing as a big in college and they've got guy who will be a 4 year all conference player.

Classic case of being to project out what big can do and develop them. It goes back to the developing bigs stuff in the wish list thread.

Pierce could have developed much like this young man...but you have to want it. Pierce lacked that desire.
