Crosstown Brawl
Tu Holloway shows his true character starting a brawl with 9 seconds left in a blowout win against UC...Frease Bloody. Punches thrown all over. There will definitely be suspensions on both sides of this one.

Yeah, that was was pretty classless by X. Absolutely ridiculous display by both squads.

Wells started the physical aspect of it, and Yates took down Frease with one punch.
As stated by the announcers, that was embarrassing for Cincinnati as a whole, and specifically these two schools.

Yancy Gates must have went to the Chris Mack school of passing as he executed the perfect chest pass to Tu's face.

Not sure why, but it looked like Lyons wanted taken down as well, getting right into Yates chin (couldn't reach his face).

Both teams are an absolute joke. What a total embarrassment. Holloway started the entire thing as he was running his mouth to the UC bench as time was running out and his team was up 21 pts. Both coaches should be totally ashamed by the pathetic acts by their players. Complete embarrassment for both universities. Yancy Gates punched Frease to the ground then kicked him. Again, both teams are a classless joke and it starts with their coaches.

A-10 Issue
Here's hoping the A-10 Commissioner steps in and does the job Mr. Mack and the X powers
will not do. Namely to shut the mouths of Holloway and Lyons on the basketball court. These two players bring dishonor to Xavier and the entire A-10 by their inappropriate behavior on the court.

Tu jawing with a freshman after a blowout (real senior leadership TU!) Just quietly say scoreboard, but no you have to be a punk. Tu will get nothing for this, IMO.
Gate's is in big trouble for decking Frease.

Frankly, I believe that you hit a key point and that the decision may reflect the fact that coaches could have controlled the situation. At least from the several replays it seems that more could have been done. x may have won the game but lost more in the fight.

Starting with UC's coach banning Twitter. It certaintly didn't help things when one of UC's players tweeted a day or two befor the game that Tu Holloway wouldn't even start for UC. Get real.
No control or discipline by either coaches. Punks throughout both team's rosters.

Yates may have dropped Frease, but #13 Cheikh Mbodj provided the coup de grace when he kicked Frease's head while he was down. Not sure which caused the blood to begin pouring out of Frease's face, but either way Frease came out the loser.

Holloway is that slimy antagonist sitting in the shadows. He may not get anything out of this (didn't see if he stayed in the middle when the big boys started going at it), but he and Lyons never shut their mouth. I can Bly hope whatever suspensions come out of this cost X a win or two. Maybe they'll understand the severity of their behavior.

Seems Xavier gets in at least one brawl a year. Does anyone happen to have links or dates to their brawls over the past few years. I know there have been multiple in the shootout game, once at Butler, and others.
Thanks!

There will be a lot of suspensions. This will effect X's seed in March as they will be missing Holloway and Lyons for several games. X fans think they have a legit shot at the final 4, but a poor seed could kill that.
While there was douchbaggery all around, I thought #13 for UC was the worst. He kinked Frease in the head while he was down. Even in the heat of the moment, that is a gutless move.
No one should be surprised that Holloway's mouth is what stirred the pot. You can see him jawing the UC bench as UC is taking what would be the game's last shot.

I really wish Holloway was the recepient of the Gates haymaker. Frease didn't deserve it -- Lyons and Holloway are the biggest punks I've seen in college bball in awhile.

Will be interesting to hear xubrew's take on this. From an objective point of view, it looked like the physical contact started with the UC player that Holloway was guarding. He gave Tu a shove and then Wells retaliated with a HUGE shove of that player. The announcers focused on the Wells shove (and it was way over the top) but failed to mention the shove that led to the shove.
I don't particularly care for Holloway but I also don't buy the argument that words were the "cause" of a fight in an athletic game. Trash talking goes on from the opening tap/kickoff/first pitch and you have to learn to shut it out and focus on the game at hand. When it escalates to a physical altercation - no matter how small - that is when the fight begins in my eyes.

There is enough blame to go around INCLUDING he officials. I think it was Lyons who was jawing with the UC freshmen on the bench as the last play of the first half was in progress. Lyons was on offense not even paying attention to the play, but instead barking with the UC bench. At the half when the teams were going to the locker rooms a little bumping took place and the officials and coaches broke it up and the officials even reviewed the video to see if any punches were thrown. That right there is when the officials/coaches let the game get out of hand. If only the officials would have said something to Lyons and let both coaches know the crap stops now.

Tu conveniently backed himself out of the malee. In fact, he walked away during the fighting. Kind of a puss move on his part considering he was pretty much the reason it started in the first place.

The best part was watching Redford having someone hold him back from getting in the fray. I think he tucked himself into one of the coaches arms and said hold me back. I don't blame him after looking at Freases' face.

You don't taunt an entire bench of a team you're beating by 21 as the final seconds count down. I'd don't condone the finger point to the face the UC player did to Holloway, but Holloway was asking for it by his taunting.
The fact of the matter is Holloway can do and say whatever he wants without any kind of check from his coach. Tu Holloway runs that team, not Chris Mack.

IMO the suspensions will be minimal. Wells from X and Gates from UC. I am not sure anyone else misses any time. This is what happens when you have a thug for a coach and that is what Mack is. he proved it by what he did to Coffee. Even if your coach tells you to do it it takes a thug to carry it out.

I wouldn't be surprised if Yates is kicked off the team.
Holloway is a punk. He and Lyons were apparently unapologetic in the post game presser. Meanwhile Cronin made sure no players were at his presser

First: agreed, you don't taunt the bench at that point or at ANY point. Totally, utterly wrong. Tu is a punk. No argument there.
But that wasn't a finger point to the face. Unless the video lies, Guyn for UC (#14) puts his hand ON Tu's face and pushes his head back a little. Kind of like a stiff arm move. I know we like it sometimes when bad things happen to bad X's but I'm just trying to stay objective about it. I'd make the same analysis if this happened with SLU vs. SIU.
@Phinhead: yep, if spit is involved, that's a horse of a different color. Starts to cross the line of non-physical jawing IMO.

UC is one thing, but Xavier is a Catholic university, or so they claim.... Makes me want to puke. It is far past time for Xavier's administration to step in.... An absolutely pittiful "face" for a Catholic university.

Not having seen the game, but looking at the video...what the h*ll was Mack thinking having his starters on the floor up by 21 points with the game winding down? It ain't exactly a news flash these two clubs despise each other and Mack had to know the mood of his kids going into the game, at half time after the incident and then as the game was concluding...is he nuts or was he looking for trouble? A sorry state of affairs all around.

low class rubbing it in move, especially the back door and layup with 20 seconds left. Coach is a punk and so are some of his players.

Wells started the physical melee when he blind-sided the guy jawing with Holloway. Lyons and Holloway instigated the whole thing when they we taunting the UC bench throughout the game. Lyons didn't even participate in the final play before the half because he was completely preoccupied with taunting the UC bench.
Both Wells and Lyons were throwing punches in the corner of the court if you watch the replay.

Frease just tweeted:
"Thats how you get a win... That's the only important thing that happened today... We won"
"Scored whenever I wanted and never got scored on... Got punched and I'm still standing like a man #riseandgrind"
Actually the video shows him crawling on the ground like a girl instead of standing like a man, but close enough.

re: starters still in the game...exactly right, Mack is an idiot...I had the great fortune to play in a very intense high school cross town rivalry...in our city, 1 Catholic school and 2 public schools...my senior year all 3 of us were ranked and in 1 of those games we led at half but ended up getting beat by over 20...and when you get beat by 20+
in basketball it's an ass whooping...stats are all 1 sided especially things like rebounds, turnovers the things that involved in an ass whoopin...starters have no place on the floor at the end of that kind of game and I'm talking starters from either team...the game was over and in today's age it's even dumber but then we're talking about Mack and Holloway.

How could Frease say that? Gates went for 18 and 12. That being said, it was a horrible cheap shot by Gates. I think Wells is in big trouble for really starting the physical fight by throwing the UC player to the ground.

I agree with you oRed. If Holloway is projected as a high All American and possible player of the years, why are he and other starters even still in the game when you are up by over 20 points with 9 seconds left!!! That's a coach trying run a fellow coach and in-city rival. Did Mack think it would be a good recruiting ploy. Bush and low class even if Mack is a good coach. Is the X administration strong enough to step in and make the tough decision and suspensions that are needed here. If Frese does not have a broken nose or orbit under the eye, I will be very surprised.

The UC kid who kicked Frease when he was on the ground should be done for the year. That is usually a felony out in public.

I don't know that I have seen anyones face look that bloody in a bball game before. Would love to have seen the game and a closer shot of the fight. Sad state of affairs for not only UC, XU, the Big East, A10, but also basketball as a whole. Will be a game talked about for a while and will not bring any good news to college bball.

Doug Gottlieb on ESPN just stated that he expects several long-term suspensions on both sides-I agree, with Gates getting the longest suspension.

Lyons came across as a real punk in the post game press conference and him and Wells deserve at least 3 game suspensions. Both teams are going to get hit with multiple suspensions by the time this plays out. The fight is going to be the lead story on all highlights shown today and every commentator I've seen so far has gone off on both teams -

Just announced on ESPN that officials will determine in the next 24-36 hours if a fight occurred. Really?
A-10 & Big East can add to any suspensions that come down. I sincerely hope both conferences do.

I will say that this "brawl" doesn't even come close to the Minnesota assault on Luke Witte and OSU.

You could be right but someone on espn just said the suspensions could be 10 games, he said you have to suspend past non conference play for it to teach a lesson. He also said that some guys would probably get larger suspensions than they deserved. I guess we will find out soon enough

I think the damage was done by the Yates punch. When he struck Frease, Frease dropped like a sack of potatos. He was bleeding from the spot that Yates hit him. The stomp by the other big guy looked like mostly theatre.

Just watched the replay again and it looked like the Crips vs the Bloods in South central LA. Two thug programs going at it, and then the biggest fool-Lyons- bragging in the post-game interview.

Holloway said Xavier has some gangsters in the locker room at the post-game presser. Beautiful. Lyons was equally embarrassing. X is looking very amateurish in allowing those two instigators to talk to the press after the game and spin their bad behavior.

Not sure if anyone else posted this, Mick Cronin's press conference after the game. From around the 4 minute mark he addresses the fight I believe. I have a lot of respect for him after seeing this. Wonder what Chris Mack said....
Reading into it....singles out Two.
Oh my....I would be utterly embarrassed if I were a fan. Listen to Holloway:

I cannot wait to see what the students cook up for the UD vs. X game at home.
I'm thinking the arena should stick with Dre and Snoop Dogg for the arena music.

X just victims
Geesh, go to the X message board and hear all the rant that the mousketeers were just victims and that Bearcats should get used to a little innocent trash talk. Why did I expect to hear that from the X punks.
Maybe in one of the next games, the opposing PG should just come out and deck TH right at the start.

the most telling that is that XU quickly punted to the A-10. Cronin stated that he will decide who gets to put the UC jersey back on. He stated he made every UC take off their jersey when they got to the locker room. I would not be surprised if Gates is finished at UC.

Just watched both pressers. One was of a coach who gets the big picture and looks to be in control of his team.
The other was of two immature college kids who look to have the maturity of a 15 yr old and their coach who seems absolutely clueless when it comes to the big picture.
I'll repeat my earlier post. It seems pretty clear Tu Holloway runs Xavier's team. Not Chris Mack. It's embarrassing to be in the same conference as those guys.

I agree. He said that they would meet to decide who would remain on the team and hoped the president didn't ask him to resign afterwards. He talked about how embarassed he was and it was definitely sincere.

Some of you guys want to take chances on players like X does. Here is your answer. I will never trade wins for thugs. UD takes the highroad while X wallows in the UC mud.
The refs should also be suspended for letting this thing get out of control. Remember in the Murray game that point guard jawing KD and getting T'd? That is how you send the message.
Mack is a loser! Once for his face shots while at Evansville and now today.

Right on about the clown called "Bardo". Dude should keep his trap shut in this situation as he has zero room to speak. I'm not sure how he is even allowed to have anything to do with college b-ball, then again it is the four letter network. Let me shut up before I say too much about that cheap shot artist and get banned.

Good commentary on the brawl
'Complete embarrassment' is understating Crosstown Shootout brawl
Is rivalry really about 'guys getting ejected, guys throwing elbows'?
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/2...nderstating-it
Toughness is not a trait acquired with balled fists and epithets. That might be how it's done on the playgrounds of New York, but Cintas Center isn't a playground, and this wasn't some summer league game where civility, common sense and human decency take a backseat to some warped definition of manhood.

Mack said in his press conference that Lyons and Holloway don't represent themselves well in front of a microphone...Duh!
Who (from Xavier) made the decision to let them speak at all? I believe you are absolutely right that Holloway runs the team. How pathetic is that?
All Mack could say about the brawl was that he was disappointed. Oh really? Is his vocabulary that limited?
Kudos to Cronin for his post game comments. Shame on Lyons, Holloway, and Mack.

Holloway readily admitted to taunting the UC bench, coaches and players, as the clock wound down.
"I talked to that whole staff. I said this is my city. I'm cut from a different cloth. None of them guys on their team is like me. I let the whole staff know none of them was like me."
I certainly hope that UD never has a player like him. What an embarrassment to a catholic university. The inmates are running the asylum. it's like the spirit of Pedro is in charge.

Actually the video shows him crawling on the ground like a girl instead of standing like a man, but close enough.

I think this quote says it all:
"You don't let people disrespect you. That's what I'm about. I don't regret anything that happened," said Holloway

Very sad. What a bunch of thugs. When UD climbs back to the top--and we will someday soon--we will be doing it the right way and not selling out our University's mission like Xavier has done in admitting those guys.

What a dumb decision to put Holloway and Lyons in front of a microphone. They proved the old saying 'better to be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

Until now I have NEVER seriously wanted someone to go down with a season ending injury ... this guy deserves it.

Well, given the Holloway quotes, let's see how Mack and the Xavier Administration respond. If it's business as usual, it'll be a truly sad day for X and it will likely perpetuate the "attitude" problem" they've been saddled with for the past several years. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that Holloway has really learned anything of value from his years at X., but that's as much a reflection on his coaches as it is on him. There's a big difference in being "tough" and being a punk, and I'm afraid it's lost on this kid.

Nothing like X parading two players on the post game...neither apologetic. Maybe that lack of understanding of what just went on can be used in their discipline.
"Part of the game"...that just goes to show the level of immaturity and class that X has.
