And the e-mail points out that the company that worked with UD to develop the new scheme is a heavyweight having several NFL clients as well as collegiate heavy-hitters like ND.
Like it or not....Tim's description certainly makes clear that this is not the work of amateurs.

and one of the teams they listed as working with was Miami Dolphins. I don't think I'd claim that, as the large majority of people I met did NOT like the Dolphin re-do. As for ND, what did they do? the interlocking ND has been around forever. Are they the ones that rounded the letters and filled in the middle of the letters with a background color, which does not work in my and most of my friend's opinions? I don't know what changes they did for the others listed to comment, though I like most Eagles stuff, so I will assume some of the good stuff there is from this marketing company. So big time company or not, even the big boys hit some and miss some.

Wow, UD's official statement reeks of over-the-top self promotion. Who knew that a new "logo" could mean so much, especially a "logo" that doesn't really get anyone very excited except those involved in doing it. Good Gawd, it's so saccharin in it's content that it borders on a parody.

Some of you guys need to chill out. It's a freakin' logo, not a lost basketball A10 championship or lost recruit. Despite what some may think, it will not get or lose one recruit, one opportunity for UD, one student, one teacher, one athletic event, one fan or one grant.
Must be the off-season blues!

Forget the Logo..
Forget the logo....
I LOVE the new uni's....They are BAD A$$! Finally, we have cool uniforms. I love all three options. The "Dayton" type face on the front looks absolutely awesome.
Yeah... We finally stepped into the current decade.

When you see everything together on uniforms and on the court, I don't know how anyone couldn't say that this new look isn't a homerun! Awesome!! Just awesome!!
Let's keep in mind that the target market (15-30 year old men) are going to love this new look.

Anyone notice how similar the new uni's are to Ohio State? It looks like Nike hooked us up.

Don't like the court or the new D, but I'm OK with uni's.
Don't think anyone is going to see that D and say it stands for University of Dayton anytime soon.

Should be noted that, at least according to the work on their website, it does not appear that 160over90 actually created any of the logos for the large clients mentioned in the Wabler e-mail. Looks like they were responsible more for preparing marketing materials incorporating those logos, but not for actually designing them. I could be wrong, but that's the impression I get and I'm pretty sure Nike was responsible for the new Dolphins logo.
As far the recent marketing of UD (outside of athletic logos) I think the university and 160over90 has done an excellent job. The brochures and new TV commercials are well done. Too bad it doesn't appear the new athletic logo hits those same high marks.

So I was off work a couple days and upon returning today an intern from UD stops me in the hallway and asks if I'd seen the new logo and how horrible it is. He joked about the We Are. . .V D that many others have. Later I showed it to a supervisor who is a UD grad and she asked if this was for real because it reminded her of the Virginia Tech logo. There sure must be a lot of those tainted cookies going around.

I had a similar experience when i first looked at it. I thought that left edge of the 'D' was trying to 'be' something. Like a profile of a face or some other letter or something, but i guess it's not. It's a little strange. Graphic Design is loaded with those subtle details like the '11' inside the older big 10 logo or the arrow inside the fedex logo. And i was kind of hoping that's what it was. But, unless i'm missing it, it's just kinda there because it's there.

This talks about a subtle "U" shape incorporated into the design as a nod to "UD" heritage. Does anybody see the subtle "U"? I don't. If there, definitely more subtle than the "V".

Back in 1993/ 1994 when UD dumped the Columbia blue for that "ordinary" blue, you would have thought they just closed the university. The older alumni were freaking out and very upset.
Today, UD dumps the "ordinary" blue for navy blue and no one says a word. Personally, they should have moved to a navy blue 20 years ago.

Seeing the new uniforms makes me happy too. Even the logo is good on those as it is all one color. If they stay away from the two-tone logo, I think I am good. Ready to move on.

Completely missed the mark on that. I wish they wouldn't have stated this. Makes me think they are totally inept.

I still wish there was a hint of the columbia blue somewhere as a secondary color just to nod to the heritage and to differentiate us from other schools and their color schemes.
The thing that's odd to me about the new logo is that they didn't seem to think of it in the context of a square, which is how broadcasts and social media usually reduce your logo to. Even in this announcement tweet, you can see that the 'wings' of the D get cut off in the top left corner. Are we going to just have to get used to that, or will it force the logo to be super small within a square in order to see the whole thing? Doesn't seem thought out on that front either.
But STILL better than the old one.

Well, I admit, when actually seeing on shirts and the court, the Winged D (as I've decided to call it so I don't think of a V or a sideways Adidas) is working better than expected. Still not great, but better than my initial reaction of very mediocre.
As for the unis.......sweet!! They are awesome. And they are awesome as OURS, quit referencing that they look like some other, lower level punk-arse schools that we beat in the tournament! They wish they had OUR unis now!!

Exactly. Just another confusing aspect of the logo. Wasn't one of the reasons for a new logo the fact that the diagonal logo didn't fit well in today's marketing "boxes" for broadcasts and social media? Only to replace with another logo that is unbalanced and doesn't fit. Just strange.

Nailed the uniforms, that's exactly how I was hoping they would look. And the midnight blue ones are terrific alternates. I am all for the navy blue and the way they worked it into the jerseys. The logo is what it is, I don't like it, but it'll grow on people. Change takes time.

I see the 'u' now that they mention it, but all the extra crap on the side of the bottom half of the 'D' obscures it. Might have been cleaner if they just left it simple, and also maybe fix people's issue with the whole 'VD' thing. If i may monday morning quarterback this a bit...

At least we have something to talk about until fall sports season. It sure beats talking about the IRS and mythical in-season round-robin Ohio college basketball tournies.

I like the new uniforms better than the old ones.
I like the new court design better than the old one.
I don't love the new logo "D", but I don't hate it either, it's just ok.
I'm not in love with the new logo, but it is an improvement over the old one.

I do believe I like this version better. Cleaner. Less likely to see a V see no beginning to a right side of a V (now is just a wing or half a wedge, though still Adidas-like). Alas, Flyer'95, they didn't get your opinion beforehand.
I guess since we've had a couple of days to look at it, I'm getting more used to the new one, but I will never love it, probably not ever really like it, but I can deal with it. And as a True Fan of the True Team, I'm sure I'll buy the merchandise with it.

I was just on Facebook and 98 out of 100 people hated the logo....how can UD do that awful of a job where practically no one likes the logo? I understand people hate change and like to *****, but come on, NO ONE likes it!...
It would have been smart on UD's part to put a few proto-types out on social media (including what is being called "VD"), garnering responses and tailoring a logo from there. Use social media to your benefit. I cringe when I think of the actual people who gave the green light on this as final design.
I really like the Ducati logo..something like that would have been cool. Oh well, in 30 years they'll change to something new (Ill be 80)
BTW, get reading for opposing fans to chant..you --are --VD!

Look at the the official Dayton Flyers twitter account, the logo fits perfectly fine into the small square box and doesn't look any different. Whoever did the True Team's account just zoomed in too much.

People that post on Facebook are not the target market. The only people posting on Facebook these days are housewives and grandparents. Young people have moved on to other social media outlets.
The only opinions that truly matter are that 15 to 20 demographic. UD has extreme “brand loyalty.” If you are a current alumni or fan over the age of lets say 25 or 30 you are locked in. UD could design a logo that looks like kid drew it with a crayon and the current fan base would buy it because UD already has them locked in for the long haul. UD needs to appeal to the future fans and recruits. If the young people think it’s cool that all that matters, because those kids will be your future Flyer faithful in 20 years.

What percentage of the money spent comes from the 15-25 year old? I think there are a lot of valid points from those that are expected to spend their money.

So what might be happening with the new logo could possibly be seen as
D - stands for what?
VD - stands for ... well you know!
DC - stands for the 'government', the comics, or even worse Dayton College!
or
VDU?
Did a quick google search and couldn't find a school with those letters ... so far.
Actually I think the colors of the uni's look sharp .... time will tell how dark the BLUE is .... I think the RED looks to be iridescent ... ON FIRE
The white is "white" Hot!
Still not convinced on the wings concept, however I like the D in DAYTON.
PS I can see the U inside the D, that's why they have the line cutting through the D

OK I was really thinking in terms of how it looks in an arena environment -- colors look different in real world than on paper but thanks for the technical detail!
I'm hoping all the colors have been tested in a TV broadcast setting. I would think WHIO did the favor with some prototype uni's.

On second thought, the logo is for the radio station wVUD. Like they say " you have a face for radio", this logo is for the radio.

They don't test new uniforms in a broadcast setting, and I can promise WHIO had nothing to do with it.

I remember when the Bengals changed their helmets and unis. I hated them, hated them, and wished they had stuck with the old ones.
After a couple of years it was these are great, the team is winning and they look more contemporary. Love those helmets. Most NFL teams have the same old crap they had back in the day, but their fans probably still love it.

Tim said that this project has been underway for 18 months. It's reasonable to assume that many designs were evaluated by many people for a long time. Therefore, after all that the final design must have worn quite well. Can we believe anything less? That wouldn't make sense.
Last year UConn changed its beloved husky dog logo. Everyone in the administration loved the new radically different-looking husky (coaches et al),..everyone else hated it. After a month or so the beefing stopped.....and I believe that everyone is quite satisfied with the new design.
I'm keeping that in mind. I do not "love" the new UD logo....I'm not sure I like it. But, I'm confident that given some time I will. I like the darker blue a lot.
Change is hard....takes a while to get used to new things.

Look at the Brown's helmets and uniforms. There are many that think it would be sacrilegious to change those.

Agree- if WHIO had their hands in this design, it would have been fuzzy with a herringbone pattern in it...

Not the worst thing in the world but I don't think it is better. I would assume the decision as whether to include a U in the design was heavily debated. Not my area of expertise so I will give the benefit of the doubt to the experts.

Now that is ugly
Why are we so interested in the UD part. Usually the logo was portrayed as Dayton Flyers on the slant, not as the bubbly UD 3D thing. The simple Dayton type face on the unis is awesome.
I have always been a fan of the old columbia blue, but the navy unis are sweet and the red and white are a huge step up from before. I'll say a direct hit on the unis.

No offense, but this is the most misguided remark I've read in awhile. First of all, for someone who works directly with social media, I can tell you that you don't know squat. Housewives and grandparents? What have the "young" moved on to in social media? Only opinion that matters..ah forget it...you don't get it. There are 1,000's of housewives and grandparents on social media that think the logo is atrocious...fyi

Now that one looks like VD.
The uniforms are great. The court looks good. The logo has grown on me. I think I like one color better than the two-tone, but if the coaches like it, the players like it, and the recruits like it, I like it!
Got me a sweet golf shirt from Korporate Kasuals today with the new look. I like it!

If we continue to win in hoops, make the NCAA on a regular basis, the new D will become known by all. I don't think we are there yet but maybe our D will be as recognizable as these someday:
I Indiana
P Purdue
D Duke
O tOSU
W Wisconsin
W Washington
M Michigan
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE UD ARENA floor!!!!!!!!
I have been saying for years that The University of Dayton and Blackburn Court were squeezed at the end of the floor.
NOW THEY BOTH RUN THE LENGTH OF THE SIDELINES. AWESOME!!!
And DAYTON on the baseline looks great.
I'll get use to the new logo. It is all so secondary to winning in mens and womens hoops for the new D to become recognizable nationally.

Extremely unlikely, but not unheard of. Ask the San Francisco 49ers when they changed the helmet from the SF to a 49ers back in 1991. The new logo they spent tons of time and money on lasted all of 1 or 2 days before being scrapped. Here's a link to the logo that was in use for only a few days at most before being scrapped due to huge negative fan response. http://www.sportslogos.net/logos/vie...91/Unused_Logo
I wanted to link the espn.com article about this, but espn blocked on my work computer.
The difference is the Niners simply went back to the old logo the fans wanted. Most of us don't want to go back to the prior one, so can't do that and will stick with this.
Personally I'd like to see this one slightly redone. Not fully scrapped, just cleaned up a little, such as changing the wing enough to not suggest a V and possibly simplifying the D. I, and I'm sure most of us, see what they were going for, I think maybe they basically overcomplicated the left side of the D with all the extra angles and some simplification would solve many of the complaints.

We are UD...and we have a second class Marketing Department
I'm not much of a complainer, but this is unbelievable!
I get an e-mail at 5:00pm today, just hours after the unveiling of the new logo, about my 2014-15 basketball tickets instructing me to view the invoice on line and what do I see?
THE OLD LOGO!
C'mon UD Athletic Department! Get with it! Your flagship sport and your only true money maker and you can't even get the new logo up on such an important piece of communication. It would take a novice programmer 30 seconds to correct it.
The UD Marketing department is SECOND RATE at best! Boo!

It's a logo people!!!
Some of you idiots need to chill out about the new logo. It's not amazing, but it's not horrible. The real concern should be coming out and supporting this team as it charges into another big dance. For those that think it looks like VD, it doesn't really. And once people hear that online, they'll immediately search it online. That means a few million new people seeing the dayton logo. This alone would contribute to people countrywide knowing what school it is.
Uniforms are nice.
Can't wait to see this logo plastered all over CBS in March.

If they cleaned up the left side of the D, they would lose the Conan O'Brien profile I just noticed, which so far is my favorite part of the new logo

I finally figured it out. The blue stripes are wings-it's a flying D. Get it-Dayton Flyers and the Flying D.

Uniforms are great. Logo not so much. UD is how everyone who went to Dayton refers to it. Why not have UD in the logo? 'We are UD' is our battle cry

There is a "U" sort of inside the "D" though. The bottom of the D is a smaller U. That's why the little notch is there and the line runs through it. Once I saw it, I liked the logo a lot better.

As a designer and in the creative field myself, there are few things i hate more than focus groups. Why? Because new things make people uncomfortable. And by putting people in a room and paying them for their opinion you have given them authority and turned things into an academic situation. They suddenly feel like experts and become far more negative than they'd ever be at home. The same people who love the finished product of star wars on their couch would have never approved of the script of star wars in a focus group.
Adding people to the process does not make the process better. In fact, most times, it makes the work worse. It's like having some idiot off the street rearrange an architect's blue prints. The more people you add to the process, the more concessions and compromises that come with it. In order to create something new, you should not be getting the permission from people who have no imagination or who are so comfortable with the old.
The logo could have been better. But the very focus groups you guys are asking for may be the reason the logo is not better. They may have killed, and probably did kill, many better logos along the way.

The comments on the various Facebook posts are virtually all negative. Glad that the all knowing design nerds know so much more than UD's, or should I say VD's, many stakeholders. My daughter who is a UD design grad and holds a master's degree from a well known art school, and who works in the field says VD stinks. She, like almost everyone, is amazed that 18 month of work produced something so bad.

I think if there's more to the system then it has some potential to do some better looking merchandise. I don't know who designs our clothes, but the early renditions of this look on the website are not up to snuff just yet. They always make the words and logos GIGANTIC. I'd like to see them make some with a little restraint...for the older farts like me.
I also like the idea of adding the U to the school name. Maybe even doing something like that on the jerseys some day down the road.

I showed the new logo to my wife (not a UD grad) and she was not drawn to the perceived V. Rather, she saw it as striping on a plane fuselage. The less we make of it the less it is seen!

No worries then that schools we compete against will not see it and exploit it....

I like the uniforms and the court. That is all I care about. I absolutely couldn't care less about a logo. They could have no logo and I wouldn't even notice.

Wow, I could feel my IQ dropping with each passing second of this video. I sure wish that koolaid could be packaged and sold. I guess I need to find some 5 year olds to better understand this manufactured excitement.

Is there such a thing? Is there a logo that can be proven in some empirical way to be a superior logo to another? What is the criteria? Is there a type of flower that is clearly the most beautiful also?
This whole hubub is making me lose my faith in humanity.
