Could have been tied with VCU for it not the 2 point loss. Played hard and followed the game plan, just could hit free throws. That one was on us.

Guess it's OK for Homey to whup-up on yo @$$, but when Homey gets his @$$ whupped, he don't like it so well. Where I come from, we call guys like Homey "punks".

GT loses by 1 in OT on a 23 foot jumper at the buzzer.
Arkansas loses by 1 when Florida hits 2 freebies with one second left.
BGSU loses by one when Akron gets a stickback with 4 seconds left.

Ouch, ouch, and ouch.

T-bone brings up an interesting point about X and technical fouls. I can't remember the last time a UD player got one. They get them all the time, freshman included. It makes you wonder about sportsmanship. You would think a coach wouldn't stand for that nonsense. I guess if you're coach is a tremendous A-hole, it rubs off on the players.

Wow I hate that team.

With the amazing number of upsets in the A10, I'm thinking there is so much parity that nothing is a real surprising upset this season. Even a weaker team on the road can pull off a victory. Just play every game until the whistle.

Bettors beware.

I do think Mack purposefully coaches or recruits that type of behavior, maybe not every player is like that, but more than the average team IMO.

Watching Michigan/Mich State. Lot of emotion, but not much good basketball. Strange to watch these two with very average teams, and poor shooters.

Our former recruit Dawkins now starts for Mich. Not that he is that good, but they are down on players. It would have been nice to have him in order to have another body this year, but long term, I am not sure.

UConn falls out of the top 100 in RPI. So now we have an RPI 100+ loss.

Jack: MSU and UM are so typical of so many teams today - full of great athletes, none of whom can put the ball in basket. Georgia Tech is another example. They have some tremendous athletes on that team, and yet, they can't score...which is ultimately the name of the game. I commend Archie for being able to translate great athleticism into scoring. Both Pollard and Kyle Davis are very good athletes, and Archie has figured out a way to make scorers out of both of them. Folks, we are extremely fortunate to have a coach who understands how to get the most out of his players.

DePaul is 5-5 in the BE, not bad.

But, they are 11-12 overall, projected to finish 13-18, projected to finish at #163, projected SOS of 76.

Not sure if OP gets another year.

Tuesday 2/3:

Last season several people told me http://www.unf.edu/~jcoleman/dance.htm was the best place to go to see where you stacked up, so moving forward I'm basing my personal "games to watch" off of this list which is starting to get updated a bit more frequently. Being ranked is awesome (and I'm firmly in the camp that rightly knows its always better to be ranked), that will take care of itself in time should the Flyers take care of things on the court. So without further ado, here are the games to watch (teams I believe we should be rooting for I red, subject to debate I'm sure)

St Johns (+6) @ #22 Butler (SJU is currently 35, Butler 15)
Georgia (+18) @ #1 UK (Georgia - 22)
Indiana (+15) @ #5 Wisconsin (IU - 23)
#14 N. Iowa (-5.5) @ Indiana St (NIU - 21)
#9 Louisville (-4) @ Miami (Louisville - 11, Miami - 43, 1 spot ahead of UD)

Evansville (+6.5) @ Illinois St (Both teams are in the 80 spot (cut line, currently at 44, 1 spot behind UD's spot, so neither would move into the tournament with a win, but the loser is basically out, the winner gets to keep their dreams alive, therefor root for the home team)

#15 WVU (+6) @ #21 Oklahoma (OU -12, WVU - 24, I would have guessed the opposite, hard to know which one UD would prefer to win, always more fun to root against Huggy Bear)

NC State (PK) @ Wake Forest (NC State - 38)

South Carolina (+7) @ Arkansas (USC - 79, Arkansas - 25, but probably better for the perception of UD that Arkansas is really good)

Florida (-2) @ Vandy (Florida - 52)
Boise St (-2.5) @ Utah St (Boise - 69)
Rutgers (+11) @ Illinois (Illinois - 62)

Most of the teams UD would like to see win are at home, so that is good, of the road teams, only Rutgers over Illinois seems like a stretch.

Both already have a loss this week so if there is a God, there will for sure be one spot open in both polls this week.

Well, Texas didn't move up, but they've lost three games in a row, they're 4-6 in their last ten games, and they're still parked in the Top 25.

I have watched Texas on TV 3 three times this year and saw them in person against NC last year. You many times wonder whether that team even has coaches. Everyone ranks them high because they have great athletes and size, but they are the exact opposite of UD with no team play and little court awareness. Any decent team with a good coach can beat them. They have no business in the Top 25.

Tennessee, who is right below UD on the dance card, just suffered a devastating loss to a really bad Mississipi State team at home 71-66.

Go Depaul...

It would be so nice to not have to root against other "bubble" teams and be a lock. In the 31 years following UD I can only think of 1 season we were comfortably in with 2 or 3 weeks left, and that was the 02-03 team that was a 4 seed in the dance.

I have to admit, it does make it a little fun to have a rooting interest in so many games. Watched Tennessee go down earlier, now rooting for Depaul against Seton Hall.

I know this has been posted in the past, but Jerry Palm's CBS bracketology page has a simple but helpful tool for knowing who UD needs to be rooting for each night in order to help their RPI.

Go to their bracketology page, http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/bracketology, and on the upper right side under "Palm Reader" type Dayton in the box that says "Select a Team". It will then give you the games (and results) today that will most help UD's RPI.

Today's two games were St. Louis and Arkansas winning. St. Louis did win in OT and Arkansas is up double digits on S. Car. in the 2nd half.

Tuesday scores

2/3/15

A-10 results:

OOC opponents:
South Carolina 55 @ Arkansas (21) 75

Other teams receiving votes in the AP poll:
Georgia (1) 58 @ #1 Kentucky (1625) 69
Indiana (18) 78 @ #5 Wisconsin (1381) 92
#9 Louisville (1114) 63 @ Miami (FL) 55
#14 Northern Iowa (792) 61 @ Indiana State 51
#15 West Virginia (779) 52 @ #21 Oklahoma (312) 71

And finally, Central Arkansas remains winless - one of two winless teams in Div I men's basketball, the other being Florida A&M at 0-22:
Northwestern State 110 @ Central Arkansas (0-19) 108

I watched the 2nd half of St Johns vs Butler. The Johnnies have adopted the _avier philosophy when losing; "if you can't beat 'em, start taking cheap shots"! I gotta believe Lavin's act is wearing thin...

Checked this morning's outlook, and there seem to be more "Yeah, right" entries than "Should happen" for today, to wit:
- St. Bonnie over Davidson - maybe, but not likely
- Fordham over UMass - not if our last 2 games are any indication
- BC over ND - uh, no
- Miami U over N. Ill - not likely; and last but not least
- GT over Duke - YGBSM...

But, that's why you play the games. And there were more entries (10 in all), but these stood out based on their relative improbability. I guess we'll know by Thursday AM.

I only wish he could have been given a couple more minutes to finish his business.

again, using dance card (amongst other things):

#20 Ohio St (DC-31) (-2) @ Purdue (DC-50) (Not sure who UD should root for, guess it depends if they're fighting for a spot or fighting for a seed, won't know that one for a couple of weeks (hopefully) )

Temple (DC-47) (-7) @ South Florida
Navy (NL) @ Boston U
E Carolina (+14) @ UConn
Bonnies (+7.5) @ Davidson (DC-57)
GTECH (+17.5) @ #4 Duke
UMass (-7) @ Fordham
#18 VCU (-10) @ Mason (Debatable who UD "wants to win")
aTm (DC-44) (+5.5) @ Ole Miss (DC-41) (ATM since its a neutral victory?)
BC (+12.5) @ #10 ND
BGSU (+4.5) @ C Michigan
Northern Illinois (+1) @ Miami (OH)
Eastern Michigan (+6) @ Toledo
Oakland (-4) @ Illinois-Chicago
Okie State (DC-40) (+6.5) @ #25 Texas (DC-30) (Toss up?)
Providence (DC-16) (+6.5) @ #24 GTown (DC-19) (Toss up?)
Colorado St (DC-39) (+2.5) @ Wyoming (DC-75)
Creighton (+13.5) @ Xavier (DC-26)
San Diego St (DC-29) (-10.5) @ Nevada

going into last night, it seemed to have real good potential for people on the bubble, and last night exceeded that for teams like UD. Tonight, there doesn't appear to be much hope for teams on the bubble to watch others fall and specifically to UD, it appears UD's OOC opponents are primed for a rough showing.

IMO we want:

VCU to win because we want the chance to win the conference.
Ole Miss to win because they are close to the top 50 RPI line and Texas A&M are well inside it at this point and ahead of us in poll voting.
Texas to lose to open up room in the top 25.
Georgetown the same.

Starting out well in the A10. It's early, but Fordham, SBU, and George Mason all leading by 5-7 points.

They have six BE wins, Xavier, St. John's, a sweep of Seton Hall, Marquette, and Creighton.

They won 3 BE games last year, this is his 5th year at DePaul.

If they had not had some poor OOC losses, then they would be in much better shape.

I would bring OP back next year if I was the decision maker at DePaul.

Bowling Green wins on the road against Central Michigan in OT. That should keep BGSU well within the sub 100 group for awhile. They started the game 88th in RPI and beat a 12-4 team on the road.

As an aside, Zach Denny from Vally View is averaging almost 10 pts a game for the falcons. He is going to be a good player for them for several years.

Creighton leading Xavier 51-49 with about 8 mins to go. Game is at Xavier, and Creighton is awful. If Creighton holds on that would be a big blow to the Mousketeers.

Holly Omaha!
The Muskies fall to Creighton in OT at the Cintas 79-72
Xavier plays defense like Allen Iverson did. In practice.

Well of course, jalen reynolds got called for a flagrant at the end of ot when he nearly tackled a Creighton player.

X is in a little trouble I think as far as the dance goes. That was a bad loss at home to a team that was 1-9 in the conference . The Muskies are 5-6 in the Big East with 9 losses overall. They still have 4 road games left, and they have sucked on the road this year. Loved seeing the look of pain on Chris Mack's face at the end of the game.

Am I wrong to take this much pleasure in Xavier losing?

How many slots you figure X will drop in the RPI for laying that egg? 10? 15? RealTime RPI had X at 26 and Creighton at 138 () as of this afternoon, and this one was in their barn, not Creighton's. Will be interesting to see...

And Creighton is up to 125. Hope they can stay above 100. Those +100 losses look bad on a team's resume. And a +100 loss at home makes it look all the worse!

Creighton built about a 10 point first half lead...X rebounded in the second half and went up 7...Creighton fought back and hung on.

X had one made first half three pointer, X got outrebounded.

Creighton is way better than #125 IMO.

I watched most of the game.
I thought X made a bad Creighton team look good.
They didn't bother play defense, especially in the first half, and again in OT.

Agree about lack of first half intensity by X, they did not come ready to play.

I thought Creighton was pretty good...not sure why their rpi is so bad...they've got some shooters, some big men, and some dribble drivers, their defense was pretty good too IMO.

Creighton is doing God's work (even though they are awful). Bless them.

Losing at home to a really crappy team like Creighton is going to hurt X big-time. I hope that it does not get so bad that they fire Mack. He is like a slow poison for them.

I am a Flyer fan in New Jersey. Because I am a basketball fan, I watch the "Catholic school league" for general interest. But, really, why should I care that much about Xavier v. Creighton, Chris Mack et als?

I watched the VCU v. GM game and although VCU won by 12, for most of the game the score was close and VCU had to come from behind. It was not an easy game for VCU and George Mason comes to UD on 2/25. Also SBU, who comes to UD on 2/14, beat Davidson at Davidson where we were creamed.

I care more about those games that have an impact on us. The next four weeks are going to get very interesting in the A10.

Again, Glen, thanks for your continuing efforts on this thread. I read it every day.

They also did it mostly without Graham, who was out with an injured ankle for the 2nd half. Was hoping maybe George Mason might steal one there, but alas... they are George Mason and not very good.

priceg75 - did you hear the announcers comment on Dayton when they showed the A10 standings and upcoming games? Comment essentially said that, they don't know how we do it, with no one over 6'6". Guess upcoming games will show.

Yes... "they are basically playing with 6 players" they said. It's nice to be the one talked about for once instead of the ones fading into the abyss of mid-table.

I think the 6/7 players is the bigger story but combined with the nobody over 6' 6" makes the story incredible.

I think you answered your own question - because you're a basketball fan AND a Flyer fan you should take great joy when _avier loses! And watching TOSU and _avier go down the same evening is double the fun!!

Just accentuates the tightrope we are on. This is a little like being in the NCAA's. Take one game at a time, pray for good health, and don't look ahead.

Radar: Maybe yes, maybe no. I was at UD 64-68 and I remember playing Cincinnati and X. I remember that TOSU would never play an in-state Ohio team (Dayton, Cincinnati, Xavier, Toledo, Miami et als) in any sport because TOSU players were under such heavy pressure and stress because of its Big 10 schedule. Then the 1967 final game and 1968 NIT championship came along. Last years win over TOSU in NCAA must have been an embarrassment of huge proportions. I have been back to UD 3 or 4 times but the time and distance have probably lessened any venom I might have had against UC and X. But I understand why all you fans still in the Dayton area gloat in the misery of X and UC. The fight in their game probably said it all about the two teams.

Why I like to see X and OSU lose

As of today, RPI for Southwest Ohio:

Cincinnati - 32
Dayton - 37
Xavier - 39
Ohio State - 40
Wright State - 151
Northern Kentucky - 256
Miami (OH) - 281

I see ex UD recruit, Vince Edwards from Middletown, is starting for Purdue, averaging 9 and 5. As is Dakota Mathias, another Ohio kid we probably looked at.

Purdue is a young team, coming on lately, and will be competition for the same bid UD will be going after.

I wouldn't want to play them.

A little less time this morning, nitty gritty:

Richmond (-1) @ LaSalle
Tulsa (-6) @ Houston
Iowa (+1.5) @ Michigan
Cincy (+6.5) @ SMU
UCLA (+7) @ Stanford
BYU (-3) @ Pepperdine
#2 Gonzaga (-17) @ Santa Clara

Iowa @ Michigan is a bit of a toss up as far as UD is considered (Michigan would be my preference), but the rest UD would like to see the home team win all of them. Other than Santa Clara, none of the home teams winning would be shocking.

watched a little of the X/Creighton game. Before the game in the studio the analyst said stopping Creighton was simple, run them off the three point line. X let them shoot a bunch of open threes.

Creighton is not good and the future is dim, their best players are seniors (Chatman, Kreklow) and they have 3 other seniors that contribute a lot of minutes (Artino, Brooks, Dingman).

Not sure what to make of X, they have a lot of skilled offensive players but they don't defend and the whole is a lot less than the sum of the parts.

Haas is the kid that decommited from Wake Forest. Once he did Purdue dropped their interest in Stevie, which opened the door completely for us. Of course the other rumor is that Purdue knew that Steve would have a problem qualifying, and were a little cool on him.

For whatever reason, X has a habit of getting down double digits in the 1st half. At home, they've made a habit of flipping the switch in the 2nd half and pulling away, so when Creighton was up 10 in the 1st half it was no surprise, when X pulled to w/n 3 at half time it was no surprise. I flipped over the 10:00 news to check the weather and when I came back, X was up 5 to 7 points, again no surprise, I gave up, watched something else for a bit, then went up to bed. Definently was surprised to see Creighton pull out the win. They have a couple of decent players, but they're just
"OK" at best. Most of their losses have been to decent to great teams, a couple of nice wins in there, 1 real stinker at 200+ Texas Pan Am along with a few 100+ losses. If X could have covered the 3 point line, they would have won, they left Creighton with a bunch of wide open 3 pointers (at least in the 1st half that I saw). From what I've seen of Xavier, they just don't seem to have any cohesion, they don't seem like their on the same page, not much communication on defense, and their is no Tu Halloway type player that can just put the team on their back and will them to victory by being the other team one on one.

UD recruited Hammond as well I believe, IIRC some thought he would eventually head UD's way until Purdue showed up. Purdue has a habit of recruiting the same Centers that UD has recruited.

That is true. I do not think Hammond ever gave any consideration to UD. He thought and said he was a one and done coming out of HS, until reality hit. Good player, but needs to play his four years to have a chance at the first round.

I believe you're right, perhaps I'm thinking of someone else after a quick search. Hammonds was a mickey D's boy, don't see many of those suiting up for the flyers.

LSU loses at home to 11-11 Auburn. They were 4 spots behind UD in RPI. Teams 2-4 in the SEC are Arkansas, Texas A & M, and Ole Miss.

Obviously you mean when we play them in the A10 tourney...since we already beat them at our place.

To your point, it's February and the Spiders have won exactly one game outside of Richmond city limits (neutral site against Pepperdine).

Bearcats win at SMU 62-54.

As Glen noted above, it is certainly possible that UD could have the best tournament seed of any team in Ohio.

LaSalle game was incredibly sloppy. First Richmond tried to give game away. Then LaSalle did its best to give it back to Richmond. LaSalle looked disinterested and had a 10 minute scoring drought but still lead by 3 points. Richmond could never tie the game. How did we beat Richmond by only 3 at UD? Hope LaSalle plays same way in our last game when we play them at LaSalle.

Western Kentucky brings back memories from 64-68 when we used to play them twice a year. Don May v. Clem Haskins. They had a guard who was pretty good but I can't remember his name and too lazy to google it.

Maybe it's a sign of where the basketball talent level is today, but the SMU/UC game was about as ugly as they get. Cincy won in spite of making more turnovers in the first half (13) than attempted shots (11). And they won going away.

There are moments that SMU looked like they are clearly coached by a guy who has a ton of experience in the NBA, then there are moments that SMU looks like a bunch of guys who were all "the man" on their AAU squad and are determined to take over the game themselves rather than trusting their teammates and running offense.

The biggest problem in college hoops, IMH(but perhaps not royal)O is that too many players don't know or are not interested in working with the framework of a team. Way too many shots taken 10 seconds into the shotclock that could have been taken with 5 seconds left on the shotclock; rather than working for a great shot for their team, players are taking way too many shots at the first opening they see, far too often a less than ideal shot.

LaSalle was streaky.
1st 14 possessions = 11 field goals.
2nd half 14 possessions = 0-7 FG, 1-5 FT, 4 TO.
Richmond cut LaSalle's 14pt halftime lead down to 3.

Friday Feb 6:

tonight is the night for all of those that say "I only care what the Flyers do, as long as they win I don't have to worry about anyone else" because tonight, you'd be hard pressed to find another college basketball game that strikes any semblance of significant importance to the NCAA bubble, NCAA seeding or ranking. I'm sure there are some fans somewhere in Columbus hoping that High Point takes home a road win tonight and pushes them up close to the top 100 (rpi 111 according to ESPN this morning), but I doubt anyone here cares all that much if high point is 111, 91 or 131 in the rpi.

Despite the tough loss last night, life does go on, as does the bubble watch.

So far today:

GTECH continues to act a good team and beats Wake by 14.
Marquette wins at Seton Hall
Providence falls by 9 at Xavier
St Johns avenges last weeks loss and crushes Creighton
Illinois wins at Mich St
Georgia squeeks by Tennessee at home
Temple wins by 1 at Memphis

Wyoming down 13 early in the 2nd half at Air Force
Bonnies up 10 early in the 2nd half vs VCU
E Michigan down 1 early in the 2nd half at Ohio

St. Bonaventure is leading VCU 47-37 with about 16 mins left in the game. Would be nice if the Bonnies can pull it off and keep us within striking distance for 1st place.

Mixed thoughts on this one. Bonnie's win better for our RPI and I think VCU is hurting and has the potential to lose a few games in the 2nd half of the conference season. Flyers could still win the conference but I think we need VCU to be still up there for when we play them - win or lose.

If we want to win the A10 regular season championship, we want VCU to lose.

We need to go for the conference championship. We beat the Bonnies at their home and that win looks better if the Bonnie's hold on and win.
