Dayton 2 , JMU 1

Great first match for the ladies.

From the tracker stats:

Johns gave up the first goal to JMU on a 40 yard free kick in the 70th minute that skipped off her hands. Without seeing it, sounds like a pretty soft goal.

Flyers tie it in the 80th minute on a goal by freshman Osland. Freshman Greene gets the game winner in the 89th minute.

Negative -
Only 4 shots for the match, but all were on frame.

Positives -
Held opponent to a single goal - and that might have been soft
Both goals by freshmen
2 freshmen started - Osland and Rickett
First 4 subs off the bench were freshmen - Greene, Holl, Powell, and Bucknor
5 frosh were on the field at the end of the first half

Having the freshmen step up is huge. Golz has to be very pleased.

Saw the video of the lone JM goal. Johns was way out front of the goal as the 40 ft shot went over her head. She was able to tip it but not enough to send it over the goal. Not what you'd expect from an experienced gk. Bet she won't let that happen again.

Saw the video as well. It was a soft goal for a senior keeper. She got caught a little too far off her line. In addition, her injury from last season - ACL tear I think - probably contributed also. Her elevation and mobility has got to be affected. She just needs to learn to be smarter and compensate for her limitations. She will be fine as long as her body holds up. Anybody that has come back from the injuries that she has had is one tough cookie.

Dont care how we got this result, this was a good result. We were not dangerous on the road last year and with the question marks, youth, and inexperience on this team, getting a win on an opposing teams home field (picked 3rd in the CAA in the Preseason Poll for good, bad, or indifferent) is a good result. Didnt sound like we played particularly well with just 5 shots overall, but we only let in a soft goal that's correctable and otherwise kept digging and not throwing the white flag. That resiliency flipped this pending L into a W in the last 20 minutes.

Resiliency was tough to come by last year in terms of battling from behind. When we got behind last year it was usually curtains. This was a small baby step, but I like it.

If we can back this up with a W vs W&M on Sunday and get out of Dodge 2-0-0 with two road wins, Golz will be pleased and the players should pat themselves on the back. Neither opponent is going to the College Cup, but these are games last year's team could have easily lost as well. Getting some wins would be an early sign of progress without having seen us in the flesh in the regular season yet.
