(Not) Being There

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) –- If you’re anything like me, you tend to believe that there is a direct correlation between being at/watching/listening to a Flyers game and the eventual outcome. That somehow, your presence -- even if only electronically -- will tilt the scales in favor of the Red and Blue. Call it a variation of the “Rita Factor” I guess, because she was convinced until the day she left us that ‘hitting the beads’ while listening to Larry and Bucky would ensure a Flyers victory.

The reality, of course, is that this is total BS (except for Rita and the rosary part, obviously). I decided to test that theory last night for the Mississippi game. I already knew that Mrs. Swampy and I would be attending a wedding with a reception to follow on Saturday and I wouldn’t be home until well after the contest ended. Rather than stressing and fretting, I thought that I would take a tip from BG. He’s forever telling the UD players that they need to trust in their teammates to make a play and not try to do everything themselves. I decided to let the Flyers play the Rebels at 7:00PM on Saturday night and wait to find out what had transpired ex post facto.

The wedding was at 4:00PM: the bride was radiant; the groom an MLB pitcher for the Marlins. Thanks to the minimalist Methodists, we were in and out in under 45 minutes. We stopped and had an adult beverage on the way to the reception with another couple, as we had time to kill. Appetizers at 6:30PM; dinner at 7:30. We left at 10:00 and I was home at 10:30.

As I booted up the laptop, I wondered what I would see. The UD Pride MB had a total of 408 new posts, so clearly the UD/Ole Miss tilt had not been rained out. As I scrolled down the MB and it became apparent -- UD had won and done so in OT! Mrs. Swampy’s favorite admonition that “they’re just going to have to win it without you” had actually worked…how about that!

Coupla notes on a game that I obviously did not see:

-- You knew it was just a matter of time until CJ had a typical Chris Johnson-type game. Couldn’t have picked a better time.

-- Josh Benson played meaningful minutes and made major contributions. Very nice to see.

-- CW fouled out and UD still won. What are the odds on that happening?

-- After only three games, UD is already showing the “on any given night anyone on the roster can kill you” tendency, which if you are an opposing coach cannot make game-planning the Flyers any easier. I’m waiting for the game when BG's Boys are hitting on all 12 cylinders.

-- Juwan Staten missed two freebies that would have won the game in regulation. When that same thing happened to Paul Williams last year vs. SLU, I said that PW would learn from that experience and that Flyer fans would eventually want Paul to be at the line in crunch time. Ditto for JS.

Elsewhere in cyberspace:

-- In case you missed it on the MB, great blog on the UD/Akron game from The Mid-Majority:

-- UD is featured in “the Other 26, Week 1”:

Something tells me Rhody will not be there for Week 2.

-- It’s a state law here in Michigan: any time an article features a picture of the sold–out UD Arena, I have to include a link to it:

-- Denis Kilicili of WVU says that basically there was NFW Enes Kanter was ever gonna be allowed to play for UK:

-- Here’s a really cool “making of” video dealing with the train crash scene in the new action flick “Unstoppable” which totally eschewed CGI and used real trains instead!

-- If you like a good detective story, you’ll enjoy this. There’s persistent; there’s a pit bull and then there’s this guy:
