Volleyball Tournament Day 2

DAYTON (OH) -- UD successfully passed it's first test against Butler with a 3-0 victory. There was a very good crowd in attendance and local fans far exceeded student turnout. But, the Red Scare had a very good turnout in their normal location and were Red, Loud and Proud.

I was told that one of the Volleyball team's biggest fans JohnR is in the hospital right now and we wish him a quick recovery and exit from the hospital.

For the most part UD played well last night. They struggled a little bit in game two but hung on to win that set 25-23. They played very well in set three. For the match we outhit Butler .248 to .105.

Our middle hitters dominated at the net when the passing was good. Lindsay was 14 of 27 and Becky was 5 of 9. Neither of them had a hitting error.

Jessica Yanz played another great match with 5 kills in 12 attempts.
We struggled some from the outside. Yvonne had 6 kills in 13 attempts with 2 errors to hit .308. But, Rachel and Amanda hit .059 and .000.

On defense we outblocked Butler with 1 solo and 13 Blocks assists to Butler's 4 block assists. We also had a 69% sideout percentage compared to their .47%. We dominated the match except for the end of set #2.

On To Ohio State

Ohio State has more of a balanced attack than Butler. They have five hitters averaging over 1.5 kills per set.

They are lead by Katie Dull a 5'10" outside hitter who is averaging 3.48 kills per set and hitting .246.

Other offensive weapons are:

Emily Danks 6'1" outside hitter, 2.2 kills per set hitting .252
Anna Szerszen 6'3" right side hitter, 2.5 kills per set hitting .252
Kelli Barhorst 6'2" middle blocker, 2.21 kills per set hitting .315
Allie Schwarzwalder 5'10" middle blocker, 1.56 kills per set hitting .312

The statistics are nearly even for this match:

For the year OSU is hitting .261 versus UD hitting .260
OSU is holding their opponents to .181 versus UD holding it's opponents to .121

OSU has hitting 586 errors versus UD having 430
OSU oppenents have 737 errors versus UD's opponents having 678
UD has a slight statistical edge in blocking with 2.99 blocks per set versus OSU averaging 2.74 blocks per set.

Kelly had said the team needed to serve well to advance to the sweet sixteen. UD's block will be also be a key to their success today. And of course my favorite pet pieve to always mention is tremendous passing so that we can utilize our tremendous middle hitters. The goal in every match is to get a three option pass * on every offensive play and to prevent the other team from getting three option passes.

This should be a good match.

I'll see you at the Frerick's Center tonight.

* A three option pass must be tight to the net and in the area where the setter expects it. When these great passes are made the setter has three options on where to set the ball making life much more difficult for the blockers.
