Welcome (Back) to the Family Mali Smith!
The Next Generation is Coming!
The 6' Guard is Dynamite... IMO he is more polished coming out of High School than his big brother was at the same age... More of a scorer too.
Scoochie to Jalen to Mali for more than a Decade is pretty darn awesome for this school.

He said Scooch didn't have much of an impact on his decision. It was moreso the relationship with the Staff and CAG. Grant was the only head coach (of the final programs) that flew out and watched him in HS last September. Also said Grant made it clear that he wanted him, no influence about Dayton from SS11. Im sure it had an impact but this was Grant and Greer.
Awesome to hear. Very shifty and maybe a little more burst than Scoochie

Mali has every reason to trust Grant and the coaching staff who told him they are willing to let him play thru the mistakes he will make as a freshman point guard. Exhibit #1: Jalen Crutcher.

I can't help but think Malachi gained valuable exposure to Dayton University by osmosis if nothing else. But he and his parents seemed to take a very pragmatic approach to the whole process and came to our preferred conclusion without Scoochie's constant reinforcement.
I think he selected our program through the combined efforts of all the UD minions who contribute to the recruitment process. Then he made the right decision with a soulful nudge from a National Coach of the Year.
I of course don't know, but I would expect there was a parallel effort to snag Jacob Toppin in much the same manner with similar inputs to Jacob from Obi. Whatever, it didn't cook with the same sauce. Win some, lose some.
In the end we have an awesome product to peddle if only we can get recruits to sample the sauce in Dayton. I think we got Malachi on merit but it never hurts to have a connection to the recruit through some backdoors that lead to reinforce the many assets we have to offer.
I'm positive there are numerous programs chasing our guys, but in the end they say, "How did Dayton do that?"
Proud Flyer.

I know it only counts in horseshoes, but UD was second choice for Jacob. For Obi, Rhode Island was second and their mom wanted Obi to go to RI. In the end, UD proved out to be Obi’s perfect choice and the jury is still out on Jacob’s collegiate choices and career.
However, as a fan, when we got Mali I immediately thought how great it would have been if Jacob was on the team. It’s just cool when brother legacies become part of a program and campus that places such emphasis on being a family.

Dayton commit Malachi Smith was very impressive yesterday, scored 35 points and showed his impressive scoring ability.
Anthony Grant jumped on him early, lands him, now he won’t regret it. Primed for a big senior campaign in New York City.

Every player in the NCAA is redshirting this year because no one loses a year of eligibility. Whether Brea plays or not, he will still have 4 years of eligibility left next year.

I don’t know why things like this bother me but they do...I hate the title of this thread! The (Back) makes no sense And if the intent is that Mali is a reincarnation/continuation of Scoochie that is marginalizing and and demeaning to Mali.

All the title means is that he was around the program for years and was part of the family while his brother was here. Now he's being brought "back" into the fold.

Because your perspective is trash, perhaps? Maybe, just maybe, our team appreciates and supports family ties. Why would welcoming back a family be demeaning? If I were Mali and felt a sense of "welcome home" from the community, I'm loving it!

😂 The opinion of your opinion looked like a drunk text someone would send to their ex. That being said, your original post seemed a bit (I believe the kids today say) “triggered”. I’m not saying it was completely over the top but I was surprised your name wasn’t Class of 2013 Alum.

We can all pray he is as good as his brother was. Smith-Crutcher-Smith would be an awesome 12 years of PG if he's as good as Scoochie was.

I royally suggest everyone give this a try. Daily.
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery! And I am definitely not flattered enough around here.

I cleaned up my message, just for you (lol). No, I wasn't drunk, but I did make the mistake of submitting from my phone, and my now antiquated phone sucks.

My fear has been people will see scoochie when they look at Mali. With nothing to back it up, just my opinion, I believe J Toppin didn’t come to Dayton because of Obi. I was very surprised Mali decided to come to Dayton. I think class of 73 had right message just bad delivery

I could change my name to "Class of 2013 Alum (Minus 40 With a Trashy Perspective and a Bad Delivery)" if that would make everyone sleep better.

Very happy we got Mali. I don't think Dayton was a consideration for Jacob because of the A10 transfer rule (2 years).

He could have come to UD out of high school.
