Some discussion points and/or observations from Jablo's article, which is a great piece and always a sound perspective and current pulse of the program. Also some reference to Pyle's A10 Talk article, which overlaps somewhat with Jablo's opening paragraph.
- While Flyers fans love to flatter ourselves, I'm not sure I've heard, ever really, the Gonzaga of the East when describing our program.
- He suggests that "it took Gonzaga a long time. It was going deep into the tournament and constantly winning." Yes, it took them a long time. Their ascension to the Elite level of college basketball extends over the last 20 years, but they didn't truly reach that plateau until the last ~5 years.
- It started in the 2000 and 2001 seasons, where they made back to back Sweet 16's as 10 and 12 seeds.
- But the following 13 seasons, they made the Sweet 16 just twice and never the Elite 8. While I'm not discounting that, lots of programs would love that, the notion that they've had all of these deep tourney runs for 2 decades is false. That's 11 of 13 seasons where the didn't advance to the 2nd weekend of the tournament - having tourney seeds of 2, 3, 3, 4 and 1 in 5 of those years.
- Now the last 5/6 years, they've been arguably THE BEST program in the country, with consecutive runs to the Elite 8, Sweet 16, National Final, Sweet 16, Elite 8 and a projected 1-seed last year.
- Enough about Gonzaga, but I thought this was great overview of their transcendence.
- Jablo's notion that it would take "something close" to last year's 29 wins and 18-0 A10 EVERY YEAR to bring the program to Gonzaga's level I think is not a reasonable expectation and/or comparable. Over the last 21 years, Gonzaga has reached 29 wins 9 times, which includes 7 times in the last 8 years. And that's INCLUDING NCAAt wins as well. Add in a WCC schedule vs an A10 schedule. Which I'd say is worth 2/3 more wins per year alone for the Zags.
- Recruiting. Yes, it's exciting to be winning some recruiting wars for 4-star players. It SHOULD translate to greater success on the floor. But for every 4-star recruit that flourishes at the college level, there's probably 3 or 4 that don't develop. Dayton is going to miss on some of these recruits, everybody does. But I think we'll have an above average "batting average" with these type of recruits, mostly due to our staff's 1) eye for talent and 2) player development skills.
- Recruiting philosophy. I think Jablo both nails it and keeps it real with his comment re: Grant "not changing who Dayton is." I think we'll continue to see high major transfers make huge contributions in half or more of the seasons for the Flyers. The fluidity with NCAA transfers is at an all-time high and I don't see that subsiding in the near future. Who knows, with pending changes, it could be a free for all in years to come re: transfers and waiver restrictions (lack thereof).
- Recruiting success appears to be based on the work ethic of the staff, an eye for talent, a fit (both skill set and culturally) with the system and Grant's infectious personality. Those are variables that should lead to sustainable recruiting success, vs the one hit wonders of things like hiring the dad or AAU coach (see the Porter brothers at Mizzou).

Also, looks like were going hard for Mustapha Amzil, 6'10'' player from Finland. They are having their second virtual call with him tomorrow. The first call was last week.

Back to the Gonzaga discussion, a huge part of their ascent has been them being able to schedule upper echelon teams like North Carolina, Duke, etc. with a national audience. If UD gets there, then it becomes easier to recruit.

either.... don't know if we have a chance
but he was the nr 3 center in the nation,
and 24th ranked player?

Stats?
Can anyone provide some stats for Kaleb Washington’s last HS season? Shooting %, rebound avg, FT %, etc. I know he’s highly rated but good stats are required to fully justify the high expectations.

If Castro does go in a different direction I will be disappointed but wish him the best. I really liked what I saw on his video and saw a bit of Obi in him.
Who knows, with Grant you never know how good a player we can get.

Amzil plays like he is a 6'4" guard. He is never going to be a rim protector but the rest of his game is pretty impressive. This is no Svoboda. He would be a matchup nightmare with a sweet stroke from outside and the ability to handle the ball like a guard. If we can pull this kid from the likes of DePaul who is putting together a highly ranked recruiting class, I would be even more impressed with Grant and his team.

I like this quote from Amzil "Also, I’m looking at the play style they’re playing. Do they have 24/7 access to the gym to get better. Also, basic life things like the dorms, how close they are to the school buildings.”
That bodes very well for us.

have you happened to have seen any
tape of him> I wonder, if he has
what takes to play like a 6'4" guard and
has a sweet outside stroke... can that
infer that he can run the court possibly?
wonder also, if he had a 2 year or so
growth spurt like Obi? maybe?
shoot, I would that in a heartbeat!

I like watching clips of foreign high school age basketball because they actually run good offenses. In the US today, offenses, especially good ones, have gone by the wayside.

Take it for what it is worth because this guy is a New England based writer but he thinks that Castro is favoring the Friars.
@KevinMcNamara33
19m
Hearing that slim 6-9 shooting forward Rafael Castro @theylovecastro
is nearing a decision. Weekend likely, Friars in it deep. Miami & Dayton chasing.

SMD is not "Share My Disappointment" so let's just move on from Powell. Kevin McNamara is from Providence, Rhode Island so no surprise he is touting Providence for Castro. Let's hope that Castro becomes a Flyer. If not, next !!! Confidence in Grant.

Obviously none of us know Powell, but didn’t he de-verbal from Arkansas earlier this year? And now leaving his senior year team. I know recruiting is a lot for these high school kids and now they will have the NBA option plus a lot of family members in their heads...
There are going to be some who can handle it and others who can’t. There will be bad decisions made. Not sure what is going on with Powell, but I’m even more thrilled we’ve got Mali, DaRon and Kaleb who I think all posted they are 110% committed to UD. If a recruit isn’t all-in...I’d say pass.

I can't be the only person that thinks castro is out and dayton may be out on him? I think he was going to announce to dayton then a 'family emergency' happened which was AG informing him of our next commitments.
Perhaps the spot is still open for him, but either way I think he was going to commit to UD then got news of what was to come.
I'd be surprised if AG fills both available scholarships with highschool recruits, trying to not be so class heavy.

We are getting the guys we want. At some point when you sign elite frontcourt players, those still uncommitted are going to want to be featured elsewhere.

Exactly. If he's the kind of player that wants to be in the spotlight and doesn't think he can play over Kaleb or DaRon, I understand his decision. And, based on what I have seen in terms of stats and footage, I wouldn't push either of those two out to chase Castro.
The stars didn't align, as they don't far more than they do in recruiting. I'd love to add a true 5. Let's get Amzil. He has a different set of skills that could be very valuable in our game plan.

I have heard, from my basketball official friend, that Castro is a very nice kid and a nice player. But he plays on a high school team that isn't overly skilled in a conference that isn't known as a strong basketball conference. My take is he doesn't see himself as a true 5 and the recent UD signings means he would have to compete against some strong competition. If he can go to Providence and has a chance to play immediately he will go that route. I do like Coach Grant's approach to "position less" hoops. That being said, I hope Castro comes to UD. Coach Grant and staff would develop him well and help him achieve his goals. I would hope he would embrace competition.

Bad news on Rafael Castro. There are now four crystal balls (including some pretty dependable sources) projecting him to pick Providence on Nov. 6.
Suppose we'll never know the whole story, but I'm interested in the visit before the initial announcement date, then the postponement of the announcement. Cold feet on Castro's part? A move by Providence (or Miami)? A change or request on Dayton's part?
It seems unlikely Dayton passed, because they seem fairly active in recruiting more size right now (with relatively recent offers to Tyrone Baker and Mustapha Amzil), and they have two open scholarships.
That said, no complaints on the recruiting front. It'll be interesting to see what they do with the remaining scholarships. They could wait to see what spring brings for high school recruiting, or they could seek transfers (who, pending a January NCAA vote, could be immediately eligible). Lot of interesting pieces in the place for the 2021-22 season.

Gotta believe Castro going elsewhere has everything to do with landing the higher-rated Holmes and Washington. Castro is not a 5, so he’d be facing stiff competition for playing time here. You never really know the inside stuff on recruiting, but it’s possible Grant politely told him he’d be better off elsewhere.

truthfully, I had forgotten all about him,
and had moved forward... if he was going
to be a Flyer, he would of said so way before
now....
next up would be, who then?

The only 2 other guys that we have offered are big guys, Tyrone Baker & Mustapha Amzil (stud, who basically is being recruited/offered by everyone now lol)
I think we are done (2021 recruits) until the Spring and hopefully fill another spot or two at that point... Quick reminder, the early signing period starts next Wednesday (it lasts a week)

Rafael Castro put out a teaser video tonight. He provides backstory on why each team made his final three. One thing about UD that he mentioned, of which I was not aware, was that he was teammates with Koby Brea on the U-17 Dominican National Team. Added that would potentially be part of the reason that he would come to UD, to play with Koby again. At the end, said he has already made his decision and the reason he chose the school was because of the relationship he has developed with the head coach. AG has an excellent ability to connect with players, so who knows?

omg.
Seriously, if your decision came down to your personal relationship with the head coach, let's don't overthink this. Crybaby Ed Cooley vs National Coach of the year Anthony Grant, and HIS abundant knowledge of the NBA, not to mention connections, what are we waiting for?

Don't waste your time (and hope lol) he's not coming... Sounds like he doesn't want to compete (after we landed Holmes & Washington)

he said he will announce today at 7:30... regardless,
would love to have him but if not, get it over with
and we move on...
he said it was all about the relationship with the
coach... not saying anything, but if that is the case
then it would seem to me, it would be Coach Grant,
who took an off the radar recruit and helped
guide him to become a national player of the year..
at least we find out,
the delay may of spoken volumes already to be
honest....
regardless,
Go Flyers!

Verbal commits.com has stated that Rafael Castro has chosen Providence over Miami and Dayton. I know if he considers a coach as important as he said in his decision process that Anthony Grant is the one one I would have chosen. Then again, maybe he thought he might not play over the recruits we already have in the fold!

Guess he hit it off with Ed Cooley. Maybe Cooley told him Dayton plays all their games at home and you won't get to travel.

FWIW
RT @AdamFinkelstein: .@RioUniversity & Dover (NJ) Rafael Castro (@theylovecastro) has committed to Providence. ▪️long & athletic with tons of long-term upside ▪️extremely agile & “elastic” for his size ▪️more comfortable facing basket & has face-up potential to develop. 🎥
He put a premium on performing close to family, and playing in the BE. No shock there.

I had been told that Castro wanted to be close to home. I thought that meant Seton Hall but I was also told that Seton backed off of him and told him they did not project him playing much until his junior year. Not surprised by his decision.

Rafael's hometown is 3.5-4 hours one way from Providence.........not exactly playing close to home.

No, Providence not real close to Dover, NJ, (straight shot up I95) but I think that once Seton Hall backed off and UD got Holmes and Washington, Providence became a much more viable option for him. If UD hadn't signed Holmes and Washington I really think he would chosen UD.

I have no problem with his decision, but as far as his criteria, he couldn't really say "Don't want to have to compete for playing time with players better than I am."

I live in Texas where 4 hours is close to home ! So Rafael's home town is how far from Dayton and Miami.
Yeh, that's what I thought.

Dover, NJ to Dayton non stop, by auto, would take 9 hours. To Miami would take 20 Hours. I have made the trip many times from my home in Vernon, NJ, about 40 minutes from Dover, and it always takes me, with "pit stops" (which I need at my age) and it takes me about 10-11 hours.

but you know, that is not the reason he chose

I would choose UD and Coach Grant every day over PC and Coach Cooley. However knowing Coach Cooley personally, and being close to the PC program, it is widely known that his strong suit is the way he connects with his players, so if Castro says that is one of the main reasons I would believe him.
On another note Castro being 3 1/2 to 4 hours from Providence does make me believe being closer to home may have played a factor too. However if a RI'er was to make the trip to Castro's home that is like a major undertaking as RI'ers think that anything over 45 minutes away requires an overnight stay.

Is it just me, or is anyone else not experiencing a sense of disappointment here? I was not terribly impressed with his interview. It seemed like this was all about him and not necessarily being a Flyer.

No disappointment for me on this one. I also feel no ill will for this young man. Hope he found a school that’s right for him. I would not be surprised if UD backed off him after landing higher ranked recruits, but even if not, and the scholarship was still out there...it sure is nice to feel we are sitting in a great place with the players we have at his position. And therein is the new reality. We don’t have to feel let down if we miss out on a good player after making his top three because AG & Co are doing a great job.

Wow, Markus has such a quick release and a sweet stroke. At 6'8", he would be a load to defend. Not to mention, he is quite athletic and finishes strongly around the rim. I could see him playing the 3-slot and giving fits to a defense.

Agreed. Just the weirdest mix of sour grapes and condescension when these kids don't pick Dayton.
How hard is it to sincerely wish an 18-year-old well, especially when you know 5% of their story?

Estonia is a country in Northern Europe. He averaged 15 pts. and 6 rebounds for the U-18 Estonian National team. George Mason gave him his first offer in April and since then he has gotten 11 other offers. Give AG and his staff credit for identifying talent because this kid is a baller who can shoot the eyes out of the basket. Hope we get him!

Gotta offer the kid first... Showing interest is completely different.
One thing is for sure this staff can be really, really picky with the 3 guys already coming in.

Where did I say he was a good fit? Sometimes, it’s best to just not say anything instead of a “my how the mighty have fallen” comment. If you can’t tell the difference, them I’m truly sorry for you...

This is a message board. It is a place to post opinions. If you post an opinion, you are going to have some people that agree and some people that disagree. This is not like all presidential election where everybody agrees.
All I ask and I would imaging most people agree is that you are not cruel in the statement of your opinion. We know there are some on here that tend to enjoy doing that. Not sure why other than the fact that they are very insecure in their own life and feel better by saying nasty things about others. We know who those folks are.
Stay civil and enjoy the sharing of ideas.

Hard to believe Chet Holmgren will play in college. He is uncommitted, but says he will play in college. He certainly needs some weight and muscle, but what a skill set. Think a skinny 7'1" version of Obi.

Holmgren is the real deal. He handles the ball like a guard, can pop threes and knows how to block shots without fouling. He is the definition of a one and done. Bates has all of the skills but you can tell he has never played for someone other than his father. He was 11-22 from the field, mostly from long range. Not sure if he knows what an assist is. As good as he is, I am not sure Grant would feel like he would fit into the system. He was matched up defensively against Holmgren most of the night because Phillips could not come close to his quickness.
It was the first time I have been able to see Phillips play. He has a long way to go before he would be a factor in college. Luckily he has two years to get ready. He's big but doesn't position himself well for rebounds and tends to stand and watch more than he should. Remember Ryan Perriman. He is 180 degrees from that. I doubt he will improve his offensive skills there as he will never see the ball. Too many stars.

Holmgren has NO BUSINESS playing college basketball - it would be grossly unfair

It’s a good thing you are not recruiting for Dayton. This kid is elite.

Yes, but two things: Holmgren is just starting his senior year of HS, and secondly, that game was against a top HS team and maybe the best player in '22. They were not playing some D3 Ohio team. Ypsi is ranked 8th nationally, and has several D1 recruits.

he is getting by with some things because of his height... he absolutely has talent no doubt but:
he must bulk up to become elite in my mind... Zion Williamson, I instantly could recognize elite.. here, I do see someone with a very high ceiling..in a typical non covid season, I might redshirt him and have him increase mass.. I would like to see those Angel hair spaghetti arms bulk up to fettuccine at least.. just my .02c

You don’t redshirt the #1 player in his class. Yes, he’s skinny, but he can definitely play.

If I were a betting man I would bet this is in regards to Elijah Weaver or possibly a non conference scheduling announcement as we are not really on anyone’s map right now but another star recruit would be awesome!!
