SMC thoughts

1. Our offense is, well, offensive. We have no threat to cut to the hoop.
2. DD was 0-11 from the field. Didn't even get to the line.
3. Similar to Penn when he had 5 pts, seems like we rise and fall with him.
4. Which is a shame, since he is the only senior yet not the captain
5. Josh, a transfer that is a junior and missed half of last year, is the captain. Says a lot.
6. We are undefeated when we score 71. We barely made 50.
7. That is a high school gym at best.
8. Why are we playing zone?
9. Why not sit DD for a while, he played 35 mins.
10. Drinking Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Merry Christmas to all.

I'm drinking Hamm's during UD games from now on. No reason to waste money on fancy beer.

That's the most ridiculous post I've ever seen. Seriously? There's so many other good basketball games on TV at the same time AG's clusterf--- takes the court, no need to rip your stomach to shreds with Hamms.

LOL!!! If I lived in Ohio I'd ante up for Yuengling but I can't get that where I live.

Hamm's is much better than most regular beers anyway!

Smitty- did you happen to watch IU and AM’s Clusterf*ck against Fort Wayne the other night? Fort Wayne... with a Sagarin rating of 164... and a RPI that is similar. I quite enjoyed that game with a Fat Tire...

More?? I wish they would even get it to him just a "very few" times down in the blocks..It's simply a joke how this guy can't get deep touches during the course of running the offense. Only time he touches it is when he flashes out high or battling on loose balls and rebounds.....

Was pretty impressed, overall, in that 1st half with their ball movement considering what we've been witnessing. Jordan had an in-and-out 3 not go down after a great ball reversal pass by Cunningham which would have extended their lead to 7 but instead they come down and knock down a quick 3 and cut it to 1. Way too many easy dribble drives allowed defensively in that first half which gave them 6-7 easy little floater layups which is probably 4 too many. This game was UD's taking in that first half and they had a chance to go into the locker room up 7-9 points based on how they out-played them for much of the half.

Baby D simply looked like he did much of early last year and the prior year. Simply can't slow himself down, terribly terribly weak with the ball, and 0-11 by your leading scorer just won't cut.

This was a 4 point game with under 7 minutes to go so the deficit a little misleading, imo..

My points:

1. Yes, our offense is a problem. We do not penetrate and probe as we should. Much of this last night was the presence of a really good big man.

2. Sometimes Darryl Davis tries to do more than he is capable of doing. In defense of him, he knew the defense needed to be penetrated, but that is just not his strength. He never really had any open looks for the three-ball.

3. We do need to get the ball into Josh more, but the "active big men" of St. Mary's just made it a bad match-up.

4. Last year, Archie lost to this team in a similar manner. With a team like this, I would be tempted to "go small" and push and press this team. One way to beat a team like this is to beat them down-court. I called for Archie to "push the ball" last year but he did not do it either. In a half-court game, clearly St. Mary's had the competitive advantage.

Do many Priders remember "Hudepohl Beer" from back in the day? I think last night's game (maybe this season thus far) could qualify as a "Hudepohl game/season" in that it was a cheap (naturally) and thin tasting brew (IMHO)...we used to say..."Get Moody with Hudey" and I'm already "moody"

On the daytonflyers.com web site dated 12/18/17 it says, “Trending: The flyers have the second toughest strength of schedule in the NCAA”. This statement must be totally incorrect. Even if you modify this sentence with a date qualifier, i do not see the Dayton Flyers as ever having the NCAA’s men’s toughest basketball schedule? Will someone please explain this statement?

Well it's an interesting observation. We talk about how UD cannot defend the dribble-drive penetration. Our guys play bad man D. But, does every other team play good D or are our guards not capable of doing same? I know in most instances, I cringe when DD or Trey try to drive. Try as they might, it typically results in a turnover. Last night, Trey drove straight into the lane and promptly lost the ball out of bounds without really any defensive pressure. And DD typically drives into double-teams and gets stripped. Crosby drives in and jump passes to nowhere. Crutcher has success driving but then his shooting is poor.

The difference in the game last night was the big guy in the middle for SMC. He disrupted UD at both ends of the court. On offense, he could get the ball easily in the low post and score at will. Any post player, especially with height, should be able to score from that close. UD tried to help, but that left 3 point shooters open.

I was always taught that the best way to keep the entry pass from getting deep into the blocks was to pressure the guards making the pass. Our guards did not do that last night. They gave SMC time and lanes to mKe those passes.

On the defensive end, their big guy clogged the lane, blocked and altered a few shots.

He was the difference in the 2nd half. SMC has a very nice team.

So what are you trying to say there?

The beer was too warm?
The Hudy was too terrible?

You were a freshmen?

Some of you make it sound like our guys just need to pass the ball down to Cunningham, and that is all there is to it. Not so easy. You have to have some outside shooting to push the defense out, and/or your big guy must get postion and have the reach to get the ball. We have two good outside shooters, Davis and Davis. Last night maybe one. Cunningham is an excellent player inch for inch, but he is not a big center. His reach is average, so unless he gets great position, occasionally, or a pick is set, occasionally, it will result in a turnover.

We have Kostas and Williams who have the size and reach to post up, but they both think they are guards.

They have the height to post up but not the size. Kostas is 197lbs, he isn't posting up anyone. And X isn't much bigger. If X had a little bit of a better handle, he could be a scary matchup to drive to the hoop when guarded by bigs.

Some here say give the ball to Cunningham every time. Reminds me of the Flyers football team in the early seventies when they would run Kosins left, Kosins right and Kosins up the middle every time they had the football. Kosins was great but the team record was still mediocre.

Perhaps if Cunningham were Rob Gronkowski and the Flyers were playing the Steelers every week the give it to Cunningham every time down the court might be a good strategy.

I agree, except that whenever our guards try to pressure anyone on the perimeter, they get beat off the dribble for a layup.

We'll be picking our poison for the foreseeable future.

I don't think ANYBODY is saying they need to pass it to JC every time OR that that is all there is to it. When you have a guy shooting almost 90% or whatever it is the past 3 games and is a relentless bulldog fighting for the ball, there's what is called a "natural tendency" for a defense to pay attention to that and "sag" a bit. That leaves quadrants and/or spots open for players to receive the ball back for either 3 point shots, 2 point shots, dribble penetration, kick-outs, ball reversals, etc.

Every team in America at every level the % goes up to both score more points and run an offense more efficiently with less stress when a player is wide-open. Not to mention the ability for Cunningham to get opponents in foul trouble..

I thought the team showed a lot of energy and a lack of turnovers allowed us to be competitive for most of game. Once again we mostly had 4 guards and Cunningham. Our tallest starter was Cunningham and I hope you don't believe he is 6' 7''. Probably , much closer to 6'6''. Next tallest is DD at 6'4'' and 175 lbs, The rest are around 6'2''. The only player thinner than DD is Kostas at 195 lbs. Small guys can cause mismatches outside but big players cause mismatches inside. All things being equal big beats small.
If one plays small, then you must harass the other team with pressing, steals and fast breaks and you must hit shots. We do not currently have the foot speed or depth to do that.
Last night we were outrebounded by about 20,and our guards shot about 2 for 18.
There is no lineup changing or scheme that will change these basic facts. On hot shooting nights, we can win or be competitive. Otherwise, "Make it a beauty, with a Hudie."That's a phrase from beer sellers at old Crosley field.

I remember celebrating one time that we got the ball to JC in the 2nd half:

We got the ball to JC!!!

Why wasn't our plan out of halftime to feed the ball into him and get their big guy's 3rd foul as early as possible? Without him in the game, we had a chance. SMC was able to hit him in the post at will and we should have been trying to do the same for JC.

Wow, i am guessing that this is some number since the early 1900’s or some such. Dayton is certainly not playing a #2 strength of schedule this year.

Well according to the udpride RPI the Flyers are. Granted the schedule doesn't have the "name" teams on it but overall the SOS comes out high. Other RPI rankings show us not quite as high, but still 10 or so. Other non-RPI rankings have us considerably lower. Now if we were say 9-2 or 10-1 we would be in hog heaven given the SOS. But we aren't and were not.
