best Italian food in Dayton is where?

on the Frankie thread I posted a link to a radio podcast from New York called 1 on 1 with Dan Tortaro, and the guest for the half hour was Frankie.. this was right after he announced he would attend the University of Dayton... He came across as a real good kid, and has known Obi for going on 3 years now, as they both played on the same New York AAU team..

He likes real italian food, and wanted to find a good place to go in Dayton..

I've been in Burlington, NC for more than 30 years now, I figured some of the board members who are still in Dayton could give him some names and help him out.. In case he visits this page, I am sure he would like that...

I'm reposting the link to the radio podcast... it was a good interview, Dan Tortaro has been to the UD Arena for one of the First Four games (st Bonaventure - Syracuse perhaps? I forget), but he raved about how super crazy the fans get...

here is the link...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyOyA0Ywg8Q

I like Francos for traditional Italian food. Franco was also a big fan of UD Basketball.

letss keep the suggestions going.. In the event Frankie visits this site, I think this would be a nice thread for him...

he mentions Italian food on a radio podcast a year ago, and the fans give him good choices in Dayton, that is very cool...

I second Franco's and Mama DiSalvo's and will add Jimmy's Italian Kitchen. It is in Kettering on Woodman near Dorothy Lane. Interior is ort of like a diner. Very good, been there for many years.

Franco had seats next to mine at Dragons games, the few times I ran into him over the years, he was always wearing something Flyers related and we would talk Flyer hoops. He was a good guy.

A little off topic, but recently we made our first trip to Greensboro. We ate dinner at Print Works Bistro. Awesome. We always spend top dollar for great meals wherever we go, so my rating of Print Works in our all time Top10 is among some great company. Great atmosphere, service, food and prices.

Mamma’s is #1 by far and Anticoli’s wasn’t far behind. After those 2 I’d just skip Italian altogether and head to the Oakwood Club.

DiSalvo's has been at the Stroop location since at least the late 70's/early 80's...road my bike up there at least a couple times growing up...good food...much nicer and classier now vs. what it was like in the late 70's/early 80's.

Franco was my soccer coach for a few years in grade school with the Kettering Imperials...he always used to yell at me to "stop running around the field like a chicken with it's head cut off" lol...ate pizza at his restaurant, it was good.

Franco's brother?/cousin? Luigi? used to have a restaurant called Germano's on Montgomery Road across from the original Montgomery Inn, it was also good.

For “top shelf” Italian, I’ll concur on Mama DiSalvo’s and Franco’s. If finances are a bit of an issue, then I second Clayton’s recommendation of Tony’s in Englewood. Have been there dozens of times in the past 10 years, and have never had a bad meal. And of course, if Frankie wants authentic NY style pizza, you can’t go wrong with Flying Pizza on North Main downtown.

for pizza chains, I grew up with Vic Cassano, that was my favorite...

when I listen to the games, I hear them mention another pizza, is it good? switching from restaurants to pizza... I am probably not pronouncing it right, was it Donayto's, something like that...

friends in dayton want me to try Figlio's when I visit, they say it is excellent...

Oh, my God, their house specialty Rigatoni Alforno is the best Italian food I’ve ever tasted, anywhere (and I’ve dined on The Hill in St. Louis, in Little Italy in Cleveland, and in Milan, Italy).

It is a 45 minute hike from Dayton, 30 minutes west of Clayton / Englewood area, but Gallo's Italian Kitchen in Richmond Indiana I will take over any of the places listed above. Worth the drive, locally owned and always good food.

Thanks for the tip, ClaytonFlyerFan. Now that my wife and I are empty-nesters, we’re trying to broaden our culinary horizons. Being northsiders like yourself, for the missus and I, that’ll be just a hop, skip, and a biscuit toss from our palatial tract home in Shiloh. Thanks again!

The same family owns Old Richmond Inn, good steaks, seafood, etc. Not much further of a drive than any of the mall areas in Beavercreek or Miami Twp, and a lot less traffic for those of us who live on the wrong side of the tracks.

My trick is to get to Mama's and put my name in then go next door to the deli and get a glass of wine with a meat and cheese tray. The buzzer will reach the deli. You can relax with Ronnie and talk OSU football or about anything else and you aren't crammed in the bar area of the restaurant like sardines. DiSalvo's deli is a great place for lunch if you are in the area.

Good tip! I will remember that for next time. The deli also has at least one tv and seating by the tv('s) IINM. There is sort of like a wine? bar in the deli IINM.

I'm a bit surprised Palermo's Restaurant on S. Dixie hasn't been mentioned in here. They have some very solid food, and I love that "hole in the wall" kind of place. Plus, they have a nice patio when the weather is nice.

The Springboro needs a good family-owned Italian joint. Maybe Mama's can open another location. Campionis is empty. That would be a good location.

Springboro may or may not need a quality Italian Joint, I can't think of any, but don't frequent the area for dining, but Campionis was/is a terrible location. If you didn't know it was there, you didn't know it was there, little, perhaps even no street visibility.

Seems like Springboro struggles with restaurants, for whatever reason. With Settler's walk right behind them, the place that houses Double Day's has seen more thing fail than I can count. Max & Erma's came and went across the street, I think a pizza joint as well, Greaters couldn't make it, I've heard rumors that the BW3 in that strip mall is struggling. That area should be a gold mine for casual dining; no idea why. However, I'm all for a 2nd mama's location anywhere in the city (preferably one with better parking and more room)

The BW3 in the DLM strip mall is relocating to Austin Landing.

OK, makes some sense, that place should be killing it in that spot. I've never been in, but with all that housing back there its a natural fit.

Actually a good amount of solid Italian restaurants in the Dayton area, but my heart will always say Mamma D's.

Between 1964 to 68, when anyone's parents came to visit, Dominics was the place to go. When we just wanted pizza, Dinos, was the place. Used lots of crumbling sausage not sliced sausage. Am sure it's not there now. Thanks for another trip down memory lane.

Joe's pizza is the best and Mamma's beats Jimmy's every time.

Also, pizza does not come with bbq sauce or white sauce. A REAL pizza is red sauce, real cheese mix of mozz and provolone, and a mix of any of the following or by themselves or just cheese: pepperoni, sausage, onion.
