Archie, Olivier, & Vee

Olivier and Vee are 1-17 and we still have them in the game with 5 minutes to go. Archie needs to learn to adjust. They both are playing awful offensively and defensively (not rotating back on guys shooting 3s and not boxing out).

Why does Archie get so stubborn?

0-11 for Devin and 1-18, I honestly do not understand Archie's substitution patterns.

Why was Olivier in the game with 25 seconds left and takes the 3. Still in the game with 12 seconds left. I am speechless that he kept Sanford and Olivier in the game?!?!?

2-20 between Vee and Olivier and he sticks with them. I am flabbergasted.

Glad someone beat me to this, in a much nicer way than I would have said it. If you count on Vee and Oliver to win you games, history is not in your favor. Tons of ill-advised/forced shots, and other various meltdowns that should have landed them on the bench.

On thing I despise is a coaching method that plays based on experience over skill, or just who has the hot hand that day. Archie is building quite the track record for making this decision.

That fact, and the continuing poor free throw shooting and lack of zone offense is inexcusable. Fix it now, or hit the bricks.

For the record, I told my wife quicker than 1/2 way through the game that I'd put both VS and DMO at the end of the bench. It was CLEARLY not their day. Not sure why someone that is paid a ridiculous amount of money to see these kinds of things struggles so badly as seeing them.

Agreed. For a team that prides itself on being deep we certainly did not want to show it today. Is it Archie the former player that "wants the ball" so he keeps DO and VS in to keep shooting? No idea. Very puzzling.

Dakich loves to talk about seniors needing to step up. I was at the game and this did not listen to DD but UDs seniors were a no-show, Evans and Jett were hoopin it up.

I'm rather confident Archie would have preferred to have gone to someone else, but who is he going to turn to? Scoochie? Pollard? Go huge with both Robinson and Scott? None of the alternatives are all that appealing to me.

While we're deep, we aren't deep enough to replace two of our better players, whether they're having an off night or not.

Down by 5 to 7 in the final minute, I really felt on the O side he should've gone with JR, JS, DP, KP and SS. All but JR can be counted on to hit 3s at a reasonable amount(though JR probably can hit them better than DO), and they can do it from other parts of the floor as well. JR is great at put backs also.
Add to the fact you have 2 great ball handlers, and I think that would've been our best chance.

DMO is hitting .378 from three land Sibert and Price are hitting .474 and .439 and you could tell it by how st louis was guarding them

I thought that Khari looked good when he drove the lane late in the game. Scoochie had one really nice drive but messed up on others, needs more experience in those situations.

Had plenty of shots near the rim we should have finished. But we were princesses when we went to the rack. Instead of trying to lay it up, we should have been trying to tear someones head completely off with a two handed thunderdunk that would have made Daryl Dawkins himself blush. You either make the dunk or you decapitate a SLU player taking the charge -- but one of them is gonna happen.

Defensively we were totally inept. When you let opponents shoot 50% or near it, you rarely win.

Sibert was 4/7 from the three. Maybe we should try to get him more shots. And we are wusses when we take the ball to the hoop. It is like we're afraid the shot is going to be blocked so we just get it up as quickly as we can, instead of taking it in strong like Chris was just saying.

Sibert worked hard to get 7 shots. St. Louis was great on denying him the ball period. Meanwhile they back off of Oliver, Pierre and Price at the three point line to help underneath. Those 3 had zero confidence today, so it worked.

One of the ways to combat this would have been to push the ball faster before the defense sets. Price continuously walked the ball down the court, never penetrated and passed to the side or backwards. Exactly what St Louis wanted us to do, because their half court defense can beat our half court offense. When Scoochie was in, he misdribbled so much he slowed himself down.

Sorry folks, but as the great John Madden eloquently put it “There’s no such thing as stepping up. Either a player has it or he doesn’t. If he ‘steps up’ then he was sandbagging all of this time and should not be on the team”. This team is exactly who we thought they were and we keep letting them off the hook. Another thing I am so tired of hearing the national media speak of how great the arena and fan base are. For once I would love the media talk about how great the players, coaches and team are. The program is exactly what it is and we have to accept that.

the easy buckets for SLU came in transition off of silly TOs and poor shot selection. The half court defense was fine as they forced 18 TOs and gave up only 6 offensive rebounds. SLU generated a lot of their offense with their defense. The only place the defense was poor is that Oliver was completely overmatched by Evans.

On offense movement and penetration that resulted in a good look against other teamsdid not generate a good shot. Instead of continuing to pass and move they forced shots or made poor decisions. SLU makes you work more than any other opponent and you have to be willing to take contact to finish plays and run your offense longer to get a good shot.

SLU gets out in the passing lanes, tries to deny passes to the wings, plays physically and protects the rim when the first guy gets beat off the bounce. They make penetrate and finish over them (the Flyers could not) or you have to penetrate, draw the defense and kick it out (rarely tried it). Sometime even with a kick out it would also take a ball reversal to get a good shot but the Flyers did not have the patience to do it.

There isn't any excuse for not finishing at the rim like UD today. With that said...

DO had a horrible game offensively. Precisely SLU's game plan. They face guarded the hell out of him, with his guy his grill, not playing help. DO did force shots...they just flat out weren't falling.

Vee...another tough outing. No excuses.

I can't fault the substitutions, because you hope that the law of averages works out for you. It didn't today. AM subbed D and O in the last 6 minutes or so of the game. He had to, because the smaller guards weren't going to do anything against the D of SLU.

The biggest factor is that SLU got in passing lanes, denied hard, and was much more aggressive on D. UD had minimal assists, which means that SLu got UD out of their offensive game.

The only reason that Sibert and Pierre had good numbers is because SLU made Ud go one on one the entire game. You aren't going to beat SLU unless you can run your stuff. We were out matched in the paint, didn't drive because of the toughness in the paint, and were out "toughed" all over the floor.

Bad showing by the flyers...you aren't going to win when you let your opponent shoot like SLU did...and you also aren't going to win with the offensive shooting percentage that UD had.

I would have liked to have Kavanaugh the whole game - he changed the dynamic under the rim by sealing off his defender.
I hope he and Gavrilovic are able to play Wednesday night.

When great defensive teams contest everything, getting to the rim is much harder and finishing is just as hard. Happens too often. You see offensive players miss close shots against very good defensive teams.

There is a reason why St. Louis was picked to finished first or second in the A10.

I totally agree. But the only reason UD stayed in the game is because 2 guys were allowed to go one on one. SLU made a bet and they won that bet.

I look at it this way - if you shoot 30%, odds are greatly in favor of you losing. If you shoot 30% and your opponent shoots 46%, you almost definitely lost.

Defense and all other "if, and or buts" aside, you've got to be able to score.

That said, I thought we looked beat the second we stepped on the floor. Limited motion on offense, big players played horribly, easy shots were missed by us and defensive breakdowns led to some really easy buckets on the other end of the floor, and there were very few situations where the "extra pass" was made to try to free up a shooter. Our shots were mostly very well defended, unnecessarily in many cases because someone thought it would be wise to put up a double or even triple teamed prayer.

Oh, Schoochie needs to learn to dribble with the ball closer to him, or the A-10 guards will continue to pick his pockets, just like tonight. He had 3 TO's in 9 minutes. Not a good stat line...

Im thinking that is on purpose due to Khari's knees. Because my game plan would have been yours Jack. Can't let St Louis setup their D. Highly impenetrable, smart and disciplined. HIs injury I think is effecting us more than any of us think or know. IMO
