Duquesne Game Thread
Take care of business this weekend... That is all.
Game is at 12:30 on Saturday Afternoon and will be shown on the NBC Sports Network.
Starting Lineup:
G 1 Mike Lewis II 6’1” 175 FR St. Louis, Missouri
G 3 Tarin Smith 6’2” 180 SO Ocean Township, New Jersey
G 5 Emile Blackman 6’3” 195 GS Dix Hills, New York
F 45 Isiaha Mike 6’8” 200 FR Scarborough, Ontario
F 20 Nakye Sanders 6’8” 225 SO Staten Island, New York
Their 2 freshmen basically lead the way. We know how good Lewis is from the 1st game, he leads the team in scoring just over 13 PPG.
Go UD!

Take care of business applies to both games this week. Cant afford a loss. Go to URI then have to hold serve for a handful of games. Dukes could be good in a couple years. Should be a 12-20 point win Saturday.

How many different players have assisted Mikesell on a bucket now? I've counted 4 but that could actually be low!

If Dayton rebounded offensively like they did in 2014, Dayton would be about 15th. So with Josh and Big Steve (RIP) totally agree top 15 team.

OT: Update UD 31 VCU 21 half.
Midway through 2nd qtr Shauna switched Kelley to pt gd as LC was losing ball under full court pressure. Not playing bad though, Kelley just more experienced.
Good news is we only have 7 turnovers for the half. Really good without Jenna

How about these stats:
9 pts on 4-9, 2 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 turnovers and no steals in 28 minutes
8 pts on 3-6, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and a steal in 17 minutes

I thought JC had a really solid game. Btw, he is now 7-14 from 3 on the year.

One thing to consider about the lack of walkon play is something I heard VCU coach Will Wade talking about in a recent interview.
These advanced metrics (beyond the RPI) such as KPI, kenpom, and Sagarin all consider margin of victory. As Wade explained it, if Kenpom says you should win by 15 and you win by 12, then it will actually hurt you in his standings.
Today's kenpom line was UD by 19. If UD wins by 25, it helps a little. If UD wins by 40, it helps more. It may not help much more, but for coaches that try to control everything they can and get every advantage they can, playing walk-ons who may let Duquesne score 10 quick points in the last 2 minutes might not be worth it.
Until the NCAA tells them that margin of victory won't be considered in any matrix that is used, expect to see Archie and other coaches play walk-ons less at the end of the games. Don't blame Archie. He doesn't get paid to make sure the walk-ons play. He gets paid to win NCAA Tournament games and if beating Duquesne by 40+ has any chance of moving UD up one seed line on selection Sunday, he will try to do it.

He did play better today but to even think that he is anywhere near Scoochie's level is ridiculous. And BTW he ended up with 4 turnovers.

Which is why I'm not a huge fan of the analytics. They don't always tell the story of a game for many reasons but I will also take that team that doesn't statistically wow you but just wins any way they can.

JC had four tos against a terrible team. Always out of control he punctuated his difficulty playing point with the pic six at end of game.

Crosby DID have a great game, considering how he's struggled at times I've seen flashes of ability before and he showed it today. Yes, he had some turn-overs, but he also had 8 pts, 3 assists and 2 rebs. Plus occasional fancy footwork to avoid turnovers and get away from his man. Nobody's perfect, especially sophomores, but he will be fine in the long run. Remember how we groaned at London Warren? Yikes, a total spazola for 2 1/2 years, but turned out to be a great asset to the team. Basketball is not an all or nothing game.. It's a process.
Now it's time to blow St. Joe's back to Philly, taking Whiner Martelli and that annoying hawk with them.

Crosby has so much athletic ability. Duquesne runs the alley-oop to their big guy out of a timeout - and it was Crosby who got up to break it up at the rim. That was a serious athletic play by a point guard.
I cannot appreciate more what Kyle Davis brings to this team. Anybody who has ever picked up a basketball has to love the way he plays the game.

I can't remember ever watching a college game where neither team was in the bonus in either half. And in today's climate, that's basically a miracle. I think that shows Duquesne's general disinterest in yesterday's game.
