A10 hires Matt Doherty
@jonrothstein
The Atlantic 10 has hired former North Carolina and Notre Dame head coach Matt Doherty as Associate Commissioner, per release. Strong hire.
Interesting pick up for the league

Not sure what he offers. Was a player for Mckillop in HS and maybe that's what got him to the A10. As a college coach he really couldn't have done much worse given the resources of the schools he worked for

I think he coached at North Carolina, Notre Dame and possibly SMU. For some reason I kinda remember that he had a bit of an arrogant attitude issue at NC and SMU which, since he was not winning, did not help him. He should bring experience to the table but we will see.

Wow!
His resume goes down stairs. He is an architect of failure. Good luck to the A-10.

I can't imagine what his presence can do for the A10. His only asset is that by all accounts he is dynamite in an interview. It all goes downhill the day he is hired to be a head coach. I suppose as long as he doesn't recruit, develop, or coach, talent--he could end up being a lifer in the head shed.

Coaching and being an administrator are two different bags. Being a good or bad college coach doesn't necessarily make them good administrator

Flyer68 is on the right track
All things considered when hiring a guy who could be the next commissioner, I think opting for the successful coaching background trumps being shown the door due to arrogance and condescension while also being a lousy coach. Doherty has fooled a lot of people. Like I said, he gets an "A" in interviewing, it's all downhill from there.

The problem with a successful coaching background is that the guy who's a successful at coaching isn't gonna want to leave to coaching for this type of role
The SEC hired Dan Leibovitz into this role and he resigned after 4 poor seasons as Hartford's coach and it's been widely regarded as a good hire

I agree, Guy might be a great marketer, administrator, and he certainly has tons of connections in regards to other coaches, assistant coaches, league commissioners.
Doherty would never ever again make the ACC as a player (or a Coach) ,with the levels of athleticism they have currently. Was in the right time, right place, pretty good fit in the early 80's.
Let's see how it plays out.

Oh, man. People HATE this guy. He is WILDLY unpopular among coaches. Witness going from head coach at the top basketball program in the country to the associate AD in the A10. Sheesh.

It's one thing to be very very good at your trade and be arrogant. Then on the other hand there is leaving a clear 360 trail of disenchantment and still be arrogant.

Have a friend who got to know him at ND (my friend was a student and involved with the Women's Hoops team when they won a national title). He speaks very highly of the kind of guy Doherty is. Can't say enough good things.

His ability as a coach <> his ability as an administrator. Chill out and see how he does.
It's not like he'll be negotiating league level deals at first. His main responsibility will probably be to meet with people Bernadette doesn't want to waste time with.

If that's his job, it may be the all time dumbest position ever created. Then he and the A10 head shed deserve each other. What a waste of money. Here I was fooled into thinking there was only one Steve Bannon.

Tough crowd. Never was much of a fan of Doherty, but certainly willing to give him a chance.

What is with people these days? Attack, attack, attack before someone even reports to work? This thread sounds like it was scripted by CNN or the Washington Post.
