Three visits set for Cohill
When it comes to Dayton, Cohill said, "The coaching staff is unbelievable. Since they got the job they have made me a serious priority. I talk to Coach (Anthony) Grant or an assistant at least five times a week. They tell me they need a lead guard who can come in and make an impact, and how I could be the face of their program. It is just intriguing and I feel like I could come in and make an impact right away."

Not sure who Ohio State's priorities are but they've got 3 pretty highly rated guards coming in for visits before Cohill gets there

OCFlyer85: i agree with you. If Dayton is his first visit then we need to impress him so much that he commits to Dayton before he leaves and cancels his other trips. Remember, we've had other recruits do this to Dayton. Just last year, we had a guy make up his mind to go to Maryland before he ever made his visit to Dayton. He cancelled his trip to Dayton. If we get a shot at him; we need to lock him down befire he leaves. We also had a guy the year before who really was positively surprised by his Dayton visit but he left without committing and visited Michigan and signed there.

This kid is as good as they come... would be a heck of a coup by the University to get him. For a kid of this talent to come to UD would be a real indication at how good this staff is at recruiting.
One HUGE selling point to him would be we have 1 schollie right now to give in 2018 and you are basically the only guy we are recruiting right now (only visit set up) lol... Hello Top Target ha
Shoot I have gotten my hopes up ha... Don't break my heart Dwayne lol

This would be the biggest commitment UD has gotten this century IMO. Ratings wise this guy is in the same ballpark as Staten/Wright (50-100 range nationally depending on the service). To get a guy out of Cleveland that Ohio State, Texas, Virginia Tech and a host of other big boys wanted would be a massive statement

Another kid with an impressive list of offers. Maybe not quite on Cohill's level, but not far behind. Would be a good plan B type kid.

Not only that, but consider our guard situation just months ago. We literally didn't have a PG. Not one. D. Davis is also gone in a year and we don't know if J. Davis will honor his commitment. So we have 2 guards at this point, one is a senior and one rarely plays.
Fast forward just a few months and J. Davis is staying, somehow a upperclassman PG changes his mind about transferring (how often does that actually happen?), then we land a solid PG recruit out of Memphis to swallow some minutes and push Crosby. Now add on top of that one of the best gets in UD history who can handle the ball but also score off of it, a true combo-guard? AG would be crowned a "reloading" master before the tip of his first actual game.

It's been discussed previously. Josh already sat out his transfer year. I don't know where he is academically but there gets to be a time when young adults are ready to move on. If he has his degree, maybe playing pro ball overseas is his next step or maybe just getting a job and moving on with life.

I love Rhoden's size. A 6-6 athletic guard. Appears to be a late bloomer. Reminds me of Charles Cooke. NBA frame at least. I like the idea of getting guards with that kind of length in Grant's system. Creating pressure, forcing bad passes, deflections, and turnoversatile that can result in transition offense.

I know he is permitted to do that. The question is whether he will want to do that, play another year at UD or move on. Pure speculation.

This will be Josh's 3rd year of playing and his 3rd coach. His reaction when Archie left was "Not again". Even if he graduates next Spring or Summer, I predict he will remain at Dayton if he wants to continue his college career.

Last year, we never got to see anywhere close to how good of a player Josh Cunningham really is. He'll have plenty of opportunities to continue playing in Europe after he graduates, but I think it's a pretty safe bet that he'd want to exhaust his college eligibility. Whether he'd want to do that at Dayton or elsewhere is hard to say though.
Josh will be used to learning a new system each year. Will he crave continuity? Having been a student at UD for 3 years, does he love it, and will he want another year with his teammates? Or could the grass be greener... one of the favorites to win the national title could come calling! Anything can happen in free agency...

I moved my son onto the OSU campus on 8/7 and for lunch we went to Blaze Pizza on High St. Two very athletic looking and well dressed men were waiting outside and we assumed they were employees...but it looked funny because few pizza place employees look this clean cut and formal. We ordered, sat down and all of a sudden a 6'10" kid with his mom and an entourage of OSU coaches - including the doormen - came into the place to eat. Jaxon was receiving the royal treatment from everyone, including Scoonie Penn, former OSU PG and current Director of Player Development.
He's tall....really, really tall....every inch of 6'10" if not more and has the face and build of a 12-year old boy...meaning there's lots of room for physical development. Additionally, his mom is a legit 6'....so this kid could grow more. IMRO, based on the way tOSU was swooning over this kid, it will be impossible to get him to UD.
Impossible.

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Did you just say what I think you said?
That last offer you listed is in no way, shape or form a good offer!
If that was some kind of joke, you certainly have a very sick sense of humor.

Philly kid. High school is in a pretty nice part of town. Notable alumni - Reggie Jackson, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and rapper Lil Dicky.
While we're at it, I'll throw out one more name that Dayton might be interested in... JoJo Toppin, cousin of Obadiah I believe. He's down in Georgia and has been racking up SEC offers.

So, lets look at the complete list of offers so far: There are six, maybe seven if the Flyers elect to add JoJo Toppin, Obadiah's cousin, to the list. The oldest, and perhaps the highest rated player is, Antwann Jones Jr. who was offered by Archie Miller over a year ago. All the remaining have been offered since Anthony Grant was hired. Dwayne Cohill, Jared Rhoden, Anthony Nelson, Jack Clark and Jaxson Hayes. All but Jaxson Hayes, who is a 6'10" forward are either point guards or wings.
It is certainly an impressive list of talent. Since recruiting is the lifeblood of the program I compliment Anthony Grant and his staff for going after these high quality young men even though they only have one, maybe two, scholarships available! I have watched youtube videos of all the recruits listed above and came away very impressed with them all!
Any of them would be a great get, but two of them would really be a bonus!

Jack Clark reminds me of DD as a HS player at 6'5" and very skinny. Appears to have more of a dribble drive game.

True...perhaps. Until Jaxon sees the list of other 5-star lads 6'10" or taller making visits, getting pizza w/ Rollo and Rollo Jr., and having 4'10" Scoonie Penn drool all over them! At which point he may say: "Jaxon Out!"

Just happened to be browsing verbalcommits.com and noticed that the complete list of offers so far is 12! Jaxson Hayes and JoJo Toppin would make it 14 but they are not listed yet as being offered by the Flyers. Undoubtedly, if Hayes has an unofficial visit to UD this weekend it is assumed he has already or will be offered.
Of the 7 players I inadvertently left off, 3 are point guards: Duane Washington Jr 6'3" from Grand Rapids, Mi, Serrel Smith 6'3" from St. Petersburg, Fl and Nick Honor 5'10" from Orlando, Fl. 2 are small forwards: Philmon Gebrewhit 6'7" from Hyde Park, MA and Talen Horton-Tucker 6'5" from Chicago, IL.
1 power forward: Koran Moore 6'9" from Baltimore, MD and last, but not least, 1 wing: Justin Ahrens 6'5" from Versailles, OH.

Unfortunately, according to Brian Snow, Justin Ahrens has cut his list to his final 3 visits, OSU, Michigan and Xavier. UD was in his top 6 together with Purdue and Vanderbuilt.
According to Brian Snow Ahrens is scheduled to visit Michigan the weekend of Sep 8-10, OSU the weekend of Sep 22-24 and X Sep 29 to Oct 1st.

Not a surprise IMHO. His comments on UD never really seemed like he was as interested in us as he was the other 5. Oh well, Cohill is better anyway.

Interesting that Cohill, who most rate as a much better player than Ahrens, said earlier that he wanted to go to MI, but they are not in the running right now. Good for us.

Made the final 13 for forward Talen Horton-Tucker out of Simeon.
Simeon and Dayton alum Kendall Pollard trying to help us out on the recruiting trail. He replied to Talen's tweet: Please cancel out SLU right now 😂😂😂 make things a little easier for you ✈️🔴🔵

At only 6'5", the kid plays forward, but has guard skills and a great body. He has a ton of offers, and left the likes of Purdue and ND off of his final list.
We would love to get this kid!

If Dayton lands this kid, there's an AC/DC tune that can totally be repurposed. I'm envisioning half the arena chanting the THTs while the other half handles the oi, oi, ois. Sprinkle in a few inebriated students dressed in the Angus Young school uniform with the short shorts. Potential is there for things to get very, very LOWD.
T.H.T. (oi, oi, oi)
T.H.T. (oi, oi, oi)
T.H.T. (oi, oi, oi)
T.H.T. (oi, oi, oi)
T.H.T. (oi, oi, oi)
He's dynamite (oi, oi)
T.H.T. (oi, oi, oi)
And he'll win the fight (oi, oi, oi)
T.H.T. (oi, oi, oi)
He's a power load (oi, oi, oi)
T.H.T.
Watch him explode!!!

His name needs to be Norton-Tucker vs. Horton for that to work. And we wouldn't want to give any would-be terrorists any ideas. :-)

What it may be saying is they will not settle for another guard, who wants to commit before Cohill decides.

The reason why it was warmer is originally that had Cohill going on visits to OSU and VA Tech and changed the forecast for those two... After they announced the UD visit date they never/forgot to change our forecast.
In other words it means nothing lol

I know that point guard is a very important position. I've watched videos of Cohill, Smith and Nelson. But, if Grant is going to recruit more than one scholarship then i would prefer that one of these scholarships go to a BIG. BIG's are togher to recruit than 6 foot 2 inch guards. Simply, there are fewer 6'10", 240 lbs. people who have skills. Grant will make a name for himself by recruiting 7 footers who can play rather than a 6 foot guard. A backup to Pierce or a freshman practice buddy for next year would push both players to be better.

I don't know if you have watched much college basketball the last 10 or so years, but the "6 foot guard" wins a lot more games in the college game than the 7 footers. UNC's best player in the NCAA title game last year...a 6 foot PG. Best 3 players for Villanova 2 years ago all 6'5 or shorter. I will give you Duke 3 years ago. Jahlil Okafor was their best player, but Tyus Jones, A 6'2 guard led them in scoring in the game against Wisconsin. In 14, when UConn beat UNC it was all Shabazz Napier another 6'2 guard. Finally, 5 years ago, it was PG's Russ Smith of Louisville and Trey Burke of Michigan leading the way for their teams. Luke Hancock, a 6'6 backup got hot for Louisville from deep in that game too.
Only Duke and Wisconsin the last 5 years have had teams that work it through the post, and that is stretching it with Wisconsin.Frank Kaminsky was pretty soft on the post and spent a lot of time on the perimeter. I know people like to think the game is still controlled by the big men, but it's not. I would much rather have a 2 good guards that can score and 3 athletic versatile forwards.

I am not totally disagreeing with your theory about the big guys not being dominant, but the really good teams have balance. You mischaracterize UNC as small guard oriented last year. Most of their best players: Hicks, Pinson, Meeks, Maye and Jackson were over 6"6", with the two good six footers, Britt and Berry, alternating at point. UNC was a huge team that rebounded extremely well.
Your top ten teams each year have good guards and good bigs. North Carolina State had a great point guard last year, and OSU two years ago. How did that work out? About as well as Purdue with great bigs and no guards.

We will always take the best players we can get. But I wouldn't be a height-bigot.
The game used to be dominated by height, but with the finishing ability of so many guards today you have to keep in mind the goal: put the biscuit in the basket, and stop the other guy from doing the same. If you have a great guard he'll score on anyone and the 3 point line is disproportionately dangerous. If you also have great defensive guards who keep the other team's guards contained, then you can plan around the other team's bigs by forcing them into less comfortable positions and using technique to minimize the damage.
Speed and the 3 point line = it's a guard's game. Speed kills. Whatever you can get from a 7 footer is gravy.

It's been said many times that the A10 is a guard oriented league. And pretty much acknowledged across our fanbase that our bigs are targeted to be developed after we get them. We can't lose sight of who we are.
The lineup of basketball powers wanting a "D1 ready Freshman big" is longer than the gas lines at the pump today. In businesses they call that "sticking to the knitting".

Having a big guy is that can move his feet is important at the defensive end. The game is moving away from post ups at the offensive end.

Amen, Fred is dead. Big guys are great on defense and rebounding, but their offensive contribution is minimal unless they can shoot from the outside.

Said everyone who doesn't have a good big.
I'll concede the "post up" decline, but there are lot of ways a good mobile big can contribute by scoring---tip ins, running the floor until his defender is gassed, short J, et al.
If he is good enough to move his feet on defense, he can do damage in the lane on offensive.
He should be agile enough to cause an imbalanced floor on occasion.
Problem is only the basketball elite have one of those.

A good big is still, and always will be, an asset. But since nobody has everything (except the 1982 Tarheels) you always have to work around some shortcoming. In our case, it's usually a "short"coming.

Haven't looked into any highlights or anything so not sure where he'd rank in terms of our wish list, but I will say that on paper, Dayton should be positioned very well to land this kid. Lots of A10 offers ( Umass, VCU, Rhode Island, and SLU) but there doesn't look like too much else that could be tempting. Family and friends in the Bronx would get to see him at Rose Hill a few times over his career at any A10 destination, but this is a kid who is originally from the Dominican Republic. That's notable because Dayton has Ricardo Greer on its staff. He is one of the greatest players to ever come from the Dominican. Greer actually played for 10 years on the Dominican national team. So for this kid, who better to serve as a mentor than someone who played your position from your country with strong connections to their national team? With Greer, Dayton seems like a no-brainer honestly.

Good comparison. Omar doesn't need a rim, just a net.

Anyone remember Jon Diebler who played at OSU from 2007-2011? He used to swish all of his three pointers. This kid reminds me of him as well. My wife likes to watch HGTV. Just like a lot of couples say they could picture themselves admiring the view drinking a cup of coffee from their terrace I can see myself in the renovated UD Arena watching Omar raining threes! May be a diamond in the rough and yes Ricardo Greer could be a good mentor for him.

Diebler was a deadeye shooter. I've always wanted one of those as Flyer.
Edit - Don Smith was before my time.

I realize it's a highlight video so it's going to make him look good, but that's one of the better ones I've seen. Kid looks like a playmaker. Looks to be able to freeze defenders, shoot off the dribble or explode by them. Some great passing, and REALLY nice form on the shot with a very quick, high release. Brian Roberts with some Tony Stanley flash/swagger mixed in.

Odds we end up having two spots next year (Sam doesn't return)? 90/10?

I'd put odds we end up having at least two spots at about that.
